Book A Widow s Walk

Download or read book A Widow s Walk written by Marian Fontana and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 11, I dropped my son off at his second full day of kindergarten. The sky was so blue it looked as if it had been ironed. I crossed the street, ordered coffee, and sat to wait for my husband to meet me. It was our eighth wedding anniversary and Dave and I were about to begin a new chapter in our seventeen years together. Sipping coffee, I watched as a line of thick black smoke crept across the sky from Manhattan, oblivious to the fact that my life was about to change forever. On September 11, 2001, Marian Fontana lost her husband, Dave, a firefighter from the elite Squad 1 in Brooklyn, in the World Trade Center attack. A Widow's Walk begins that fateful morning, when Marian, a playwright and comedienne, became a widow, a single mother, and an unlikely activist. Two weeks after 9/11, the city attempted to close Squad 1, which had suffered the loss of twelve men. Known for her feisty spirit and passionate loyalty, Marian, who was still reeling from her profound loss, began to mobilize the neighborhood to keep the firehouse open. From this unlikely platform the 9/11 Widows and Victims' Families Association grew. Over the next twelve months, Marian struggled with the tragedy's endless ripple effects, from the minute and deeply personal—she wonders who will play Star Wars with her son, Aidan, and carry him on his shoulders; to the collective: she works to get families and widows necessary information about the recovery effort and attends private meetings with Governor Pataki, Mayor Giuliani, Senator Clinton, and Mayor Bloomberg. Through it all, Marian's irrepressible humor is her best armor, as well as evidence of her buoyant strength. Written with great heart and humanity, A Widow's Walk is a timely opportunity for remembrance and a timeless testament to love's loss and the resilience of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: A broad-ranging exploration of the everyday lives of women—from social calls to medical needs—during one of English history’s most fascinating periods. Maids, wives, and widows were the official classifications of women according to English law in the early modern era, immediately following the medieval period. In this fascinating study of the time, historian Sara Read shows “how varied, rich, joyous, and sociable early modern women’s lives were, not to mention just how busy or difficult they could be” (Read, from the introduction). Read delves into how these women filled their days, including vivid details of what they liked to eat and drink, what jobs they held, and how they raised their children. With chapters devoted to beauty regimes, fashion, and literature, the book examines the cultural and domestic aspects of life, as well as how women understood and dealt with their monthly periods and what it was like to give birth in a time before modern obstetric care was available. Maids, Wives, Widows also highlights key moments in women’s history such as the 1671 publication of the first midwifery guide by Jane Sharp; the turmoil caused by the Civil Wars of the 1640s; the various new religious sects in which women participated to a surprising extent; and many others. Also scrutinized are cases of notorious criminals such as murderer Sarah Malcolm and confidence trickster Mary Toft who pretended to give birth to rabbits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widows and Orphans is a story for readers of all ages. Protagonist Crosby Hoggard, a literary cousin of Tom Sawyer, has trouble at Andrew Johnson Junior High School in Monte Vista, California. Big trouble for a twelve-year-old. He's been labeled "difficult" by school officials. And whenever his class reads a story, Crosby""to the teacher's chagrin""turns into a junior psychologist, analyzing the dubious details of the superficial plots and of the dangerously innocent lives of the characters. Crosby is also the daily target of the pimply-faced playground bully, Clyde Winston, who always sits victoriously on his victims. But all is not bleak, for on his way home after school one hot day in June, Crosby comes to a sudden, personal decision about his life, which he shares with his classmate and truest friend, Maria Lopez. What Crosby doesn't know is that his resolution will change him in ways he never anticipated, not only at school, but also at home and church. What happened in Crosby's life three years ago that set him on an intense and voracious reading jag? Why is it that the people around Crosby seem to know something about his life that Crosby himself refuses to think about? In the story, a series of remarkable circumstances brings Crosby face to face with the secret of his own past, and he is confronted with his destiny, which is linked to a visiting preacher, an old man who had an encounter with him three years ago. And that encounter is now about to catch up to Crosby for an unexpected, jolting climax.

Book The Two Widows and the Death Butterflies

Download or read book The Two Widows and the Death Butterflies written by Tarsicio Álvarez and published by ibukku. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was writing this story, I gave myself the assignment to ask 50 people whether or not they believed that black butterflies were messengers of death. Out of those 50, 39 responded yes, and some affirmed having had personal experiences with black butterflies. Some would say that few minutes after having seen them, they had received news that a family member or somebody they knew had passed away. Others assured that it was the spirit of a family member that had come to visit them. Only 11 said that they did not believe and had never heard anything regarding that. Since ancient times, many cultures have had that belief that black butterflies are messengers of death. However there are also some countries where they believe they bring good luck. What do you believe? Are black butterflies messengers of death or not? Or are you one of the people who believe that when they see one it announces good fortune. Surely if a black butterfly has ever entered your home and shortly after you received news that close one had passed away, you probably believe it. But if more than once they've entered in your home, and nobody has ever passed away, then you probably don't believe in it. In this story strange things happened to two women who widowed, and they were convinced that black butterflies were behind everything that happened to them. One of them almost ends up killed by stones thrown by a whole town; the other after becoming a widow decided to mourn for her whole life until she died. In the end one of them survived being buried by a bunch of stones. The other one changed her mind and decided to take off her mourning dress, and both ended up getting married again. If you want to know what they went through how is it that in the end they changed their minds and got married again, I invite you to read this exciting story full of mystery, suspense and action and... why not, a bit of humor as well.

In THE GOSSIP OF AN EARL, The Earl of Fennington has a secret identity—that of Mr. Pepperidge, editor of London's premiere gossip rag, The Tattler. While attending a garden party as Fennington, he meets and falls in love with Lady Emelia. The attraction is mutual, for despite knowing better, she allows him to kiss her behind a hedgerow. Who will know but them? Why, Mr. Pepperidge, of course! Desperate to spend more time with Emelia, Fennington employs a bit of blackmail to force Emelia to meet with him. Disguised as Mr. Pepperidge, he insists she provide him the on-dit she hears in Mayfair parlors. That, or he'll print the news of her kiss with the earl in The Tattler! With mistaken identities ruling the reports in the rag and a new Gossip Goddess sharing news of obscure aristocrats, is it any wonder the members of the ton love to hate gossip? Or do they really love gossip? When a widow just out of mourning returns to her position as a operative with the Foreign Office, she's assigned to help another spy regain his abilities after his experience with the horrors of war. What she doesn't know is that he's been assigned to her for an entirely different reason. Deception and intrigue highlight THE ENIGMA OF A WIDOW, a sensual tale of two spies with the same insane assignment—each other. Nothing makes a man more lonely than his secrets. The same might be said for women. Elise, the widow of Lord Lancaster, has had enough of marriage, but pining for the chance at motherhood, she may just have to consider Godfrey’s proposal. If he can just get it right. The man has some preconceived notions about his true love, none of which are true. But then, she has some of the same notions about him. And none of them are real! Misunderstandings must be overcome in this sensual tale of secrets and numbers.

Book excerpt: This collection of letters written between Theophilus and Harriet Perry during the Civil War provides an intimate, firsthand account of the effect of the war on one young couple. Perry was an officer with the 28th Texas Cavalry, a unit that campaigned in Arkansas and Louisiana as part of the division known as "Walker’s Greyhounds.” His letters describe his service in a highly literate style that is unusual for Confederate accounts. He documents a number of important events, including his experiences as a detached officer in Arkansas in the winter of 1862-63, the attempt to relieve the siege of Vicksburg, mutiny in his regiment, and the Red River campaign, just before he was killed in the battle of Pleasant Hill. Harriet’s writings allow the reader to witness the everyday life of an upper-class woman enduring home front deprivations, facing the hardships and fears of childbearing and childrearing alone, and coping with other challenges resulting from her husband’s absence.

But the suspects are not your typical thugs—they are women in black . . .
