Book A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake

Download or read book A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake written by Joseph Campbell and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2005 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1939, countless would-be readers of "Finnegans Wake" - James Joyce's masterwork, which consumed a third of his life - have given up after a few pages, dismissing it as a "perverse triumph of the unintelligible." In 1944, a young professor of mythology and literature named Joseph Campbell, working with Henry Morton Robinson, wrote the first "key" or guide to entering the fascinating, disturbing, marvelously rich world of "Finnegans Wake." The authors break down Joyce's "unintelligible" book page by page, stripping the text of much of its obscurity and serving up thoughtful interpretations via footnotes and bracketed commentary. They outline the book's basic action, and then simplify -- and clarify -- its complex web of images and allusions. "A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake" is the latest addition to the "Collected Works of Joseph Campbell" series.

Book Finnegans Wake

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Gordon
  • Publisher : Syracuse University Press
  • Release : 1986-12-01
  • ISBN : 9780815623953
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Finnegans Wake written by John Gordon and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1986-12-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only full-length study of Finnegans Wake to outline and catalog the immense amount of naturalistic detail from which Joyce built the book. The opening chapters describe the physical setting, time, and main characters out of which the book is constructed. John Gordon argues that behind this detail is an essentially autobiographical story involving Joyce's history and, in particular, his feelings toward his father, wife, daughter and the older brother who died in infancy. Many of the author's findings are new and likely to be controversial because recent criticism has tended to the belief that what he attempts to do cannot be done. This new study of Finnegans Wake represents a radically conservative approach and is intended to function both as a guide to the newcomer seeking a chapter-by-chapter plot summary and as an original contribution to Joyce criticism.

Book Genitricksling Joyce

Download or read book Genitricksling Joyce written by Sam Slote and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joyce's methods of composition have only recently begun to be examined in a rigorous fashion. Already the work done on the genesis of Joyce's texts has fostered both new insights and new questions regarding the overall status of his oeuvre. The conference Genitricksling Joyce, held at Antwerp in 1997, testified to the variety and vitality of genetic investigations into Joyce's work. We have tried to recreate this vitality in the present volume with a double purpose, or double trick. First, the essays collected in Genitricksling Joyce are not only indicative of the growing body of genetic scholarship, they also signify methodological and theoretical changes among its practitioners towards a more open form of discussion and understanding. Second, we hope that these essays will clearly demonstrate the relevance of genetic criticism to current critical and cultural concerns in Joyce studies.

Book Finnegans Wakes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick O'Neill
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2022-03-01
  • ISBN : 1487542011
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Finnegans Wakes written by Patrick O'Neill and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce's astonishing final text, Finnegans Wake (1939), is universally acknowledged to be entirely untranslatable. And yet, no fewer than fifteen complete renderings of the 628-page text exist to date, in twelve different languages altogether – and at least ten further complete renderings have been announced as underway for publication in the early 2020s, in nine different languages. Finnegans Wakes delineates, for the first time in any language, the international history of these renderings and discusses the multiple issues faced by translators. The book also comments on partial and fragmentary renderings from some thirty languages altogether, including such perhaps unexpected languages as Galician, Guarani, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, and Irish, not to mention Latin and Ancient Egyptian. Excerpts from individual renderings are analysed in detail, together with brief biographical notes on numerous individual translators. Chronicling renderings spanning multiple decades, Finnegans Wakes illustrates the capacity of Joyce's final text to generate an inexhaustible multiplicity of possible meanings among the ever-increasing number of its impossible translations.

Book Narrative Design in Finnegans Wake

Download or read book Narrative Design in Finnegans Wake written by R. J. Schork and published by Florida James Joyce Series. This book was released on 1996 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first book in fifty years...that actually presents a central thesis for the entire work." -Bernard Benstock "An unusual book, often illuminating, sometimes annoying, often well researched, sometimes mistaken.... Written in a simple and direct style immediately accessible to undergraduates as well as to more practiced readers." -Clive Hart, University of Essex Making bold claims for a new literary interpretation, Harry Burrell presents a forceful analytical model for understanding Joyce's Finnegans Wake. He argues that Joyce used the genesis story of Adam and Eve as his underlying narrative and interwove it with themes and images from literature and history, thus rewriting the Bible, abolishing the wicked God of the Old Testament, and replacing Him with a gentle, loving female goddess. Critics and readers of Finnegans Wake have long yearned for "a thread of English meaning" and "a grand unified theory" for the novel but until now have been unable to penetrate its surface language. Burrell unscrambles the puzzle and reveals the basic underlying scheme that allows the reader to connect its extremely diverse parts into a comprehensible narrative. He explains who all the characters are and how Joyce disguised them while utilizing their identities. Burrell brings a scientist's approach to his task of interpretation. This strong, probing reading of Finnegans Wake is bound to stimulate controversy and extensive discussion among Joyce lovers. Harry Burrell is a retired research chemist and former associate professor of chemistry at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He is the author of numerous articles in technical journals as well as several articles for A Wake Newslitter.

Book Nevertheless We Persisted

Download or read book Nevertheless We Persisted written by In This Together Media and published by Ember. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful collection of essays from actors, activists, athletes, politicians, musicians, writers, and teens, including Senator Amy Klobuchar, actress Alia Shawkat, actor Maulik Pancholy, poet Azure Antoinette, teen activist Gavin Grimm, and many, many others, each writing about a time in their youth when they were held back because of their race, gender, or sexual identity—but persisted. "Aren't you a terrorist?" "There are no roles for people who look like you." "That's a sin." "No girls allowed." They've heard it all. Actress Alia Shawkat reflects on all the parts she was told she was too "ethnic" to play. Former NFL player Wade Davis recalls his bullying of gay classmates in an attempt to hide his own sexuality. Teen Gavin Grimm shares the story that led to one of the infamous "bathroom bills," and how he's fighting it. Holocaust survivor Fanny Starr tells of her harrowing time in Aushwitz, where she watched her family disappear, one by one. What made them rise up through the hate? What made them overcome the obstacles of their childhood to achieve extraordinary success? How did they break out of society's limited view of who they are and find their way to the beautiful and hard-won lives they live today? With a foreword by Minnesota senator and up-and-coming Democratic party leader Amy Klobuchar, these essays share deeply personal stories of resilience, faith, love, and, yes, persistence. An International Latino Book Award Winner A National Council for Social Studies Selection "Each tale is a soulful testament to the endurance of the human spirit and reminds readers that they are not alone in their search for self. . . . An unflinchingly honest book that should be required reading for every young person in America." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review "An invaluable collection of snapshots of American society." —VOYA, starred review "[A] gem of a book. . . . There's a lot to study here and talk about on the way to becoming kinder, more empathetic, and most important, compassionate." —Booklist "Readers encountering injustice in their own lives may be compelled to take heart—and even action." —Publishers Weekly "A powerful collection of voices." —SLJ "The sheer variation in writing styles, subject-matters, and structure to these narratives provides readers with inspiration in assorted forms and a complex interpretation of what it means to persist." —The Bulletin
