Book A Voyage Around the World

Download or read book A Voyage Around the World written by Charles Clerke and published by . This book was released on 1767 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title page states that it was written 'by an Officer on Board the said Ship' This was originally thought to have been Byron himself, but it is more recently being assigned to Charles Clerke, who was a Mid-Shipman on the voyage - and later sailed with James Cook. Byron was asked to explore the S Atlantic, in the hope of finding a base for British interests, but this was kept secret to avoid conflict with Spanish authorities who controlled the S American mainland. He crossed the Atlantic in winter 1764. The account provoked considerable interest, particularly because of its description of a giant people in Patagonia. The book describes a meeting in which Commodore Byron wanted to hand out 'trinkets - 'The method he made use of to facilitate the distribution of them, was by making the Indians sit down on the ground, that he might put the strings of beads, &c. round their necks, and such was their extraordinary size, that in this situation they were almost as high as the Commodore when standing.'

Book Carteret s Voyage Round the World 1766 1769

Download or read book Carteret s Voyage Round the World 1766 1769 written by Helen Wallis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Philip Carteret sailed to the South Seas as second in command to Samuel Wallis on a voyage of discovery of the Southern Continent. Separating from Wallis at the exit to the Strait of Magellan he went on to make an independent voyage which has earned him the reputation of being the ablest and most ill-fated of Cook's immediate precursors. Handicapped by a defective ship and inadequate supplies he made a spirited attempt to carry out his instructions. While Wallis was enjoying the delights of Tahiti, Carteret on a more southerly track rediscovered the long lost Spanish discoveries of Santa Cruz and the Solomon Islands, and then became involved in a bitter dispute with the Dutch in Celebes which almost ended in open warfare. This edition presents the first full account of the voyage. It is based on Carteret's own manuscript Journals including one which Carteret wrote with a view to publication to correct the misrepresentation of John Hawkesworth's Voyages (1773). Supplemented by letters and other documents from English and Dutch archives, these manuscripts throw light on various controversial topics, such as the conduct of Wallis and the Admiralty, the Patagonian giants, Carteret's quarrel with the Dutch, and the rights and wrongs in the dispute following the publication of Voyages. Maps drawn on the voyage are reproduced. The main pagination of this and the following volume (Second Series 125) is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1965.

Book Exploration of the South Seas in the Eighteenth Century Rediscovered Accounts Volume I

Download or read book Exploration of the South Seas in the Eighteenth Century Rediscovered Accounts Volume I written by Sandhya Patel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of key voyaging manuscripts has contributed to the flourishing of enduring and prolific worldwide scholarship across numerous fields. These navigators and their texts were instrumental in spurring on further exploration, annexation and ultimately colonisation of the pacific territories in the space of only a few decades. This series will present new sources and primary texts in English, paving the way for postcolonial critical approaches in which the reporting, writing, rewriting and translating of Empire and the ‘Other’ takes precedence over the safeguarding of master narratives. Each of the volumes contains an introduction that sets out the context in which these voyages took place and extensive annotations clarify and explain the original texts. The first volume makes available Samuel Wallis’ logs of the Dolphin’s voyage 1766-68 in their original form for the first time. Captain Samuel Wallis was the first Englishman to come across the Tuamotus and the Society Isles in the South Pacific, specifically Tahiti. His writings predate the available textual sources by Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, the logs of the Spanish voyages and James Cook — whose text Wallis’ prefigures. The three logs attest to the very first encounter between Europeans and Tahitians, but until now comparatively little research has been conducted on the more elaborate second volume and none on the first. The Polynesian archipelagos grew into objects of discourse over the years and Wallis' logs may very well be located at the heart of these evocative constructs.
