Reb Anderson first introduces us to the fundamental ideas of Zen Buddhist practice. Who was Shakyamuni Buddha and what was his central teaching? What does it mean to be a bodhisattva and take the bodhisattva vow? Why should we confess and acknowledge our ancient twisted karma? What is the significance of taking refuge in Buddha, dharma, and sangha? The author explores the ten basic precepts, including not killing, not stealing, not lying, not misusing sexuality, and not using intoxicants. A gifted storyteller, Anderson takes us to the heart of situations, where moral judgments are not easy and we do not have all the answers. With wisdom and compassion, he teaches us how to confront the emotional and ethical turmoil of our lives.

Book A Volume of the Book of Precepts Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Volume of the Book of Precepts Classic Reprint written by Hefes B. Yasliah and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Volume of the Book of Precepts A weighty objection to Bloch's view is also furnished by the very passage in which R. Simlai's statement is recorded. The explanation which that Amora offers is too flimsy to have suggested the number. Had he been at liberty to choose any number he pleased, he would have adopted one which would have made the thought of immutability more evident. For few people would associate the days of the year (not the course of the sun) and the members of the human body with the idea of immutability. Moreover, he might have at least chosen the lunar system rather than the solar. The impression one gains from that passage, therefore, is that R. Simlai offered a homiletic explanation for a well-known tradition. The novelty of his exposition does not lie in the number, but in the reason which he assigns to it. Book excerpt: Translators imputed words in the King James Bible and italics them because some have assumed that those words were placed for importance. In fact, the words in italics in the King James Bible are words that were added by the translators to help the reader. They felt it was necessary when translating from one language to another because a word in one language may not have a comparison word in English and natural expressions often do not efficiently flow smoothly from one language to another. Hence, the words in italics are words which do not have any equality in the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek text. By adding these words, the translators' goal was to make the meaning of the sentence clearer and produce a more readable translation that reads smoothly, yet was faithful to the original. However, to make sure that the reader understood that these words were not in the manuscripts, they set them in italics.Clearly, the words in italics were not miraculously given to the translators by God as additional inspiration the same way He did as recorded in 2 Peter 1:21, "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Neither are the italics there to add emphasis. The words in italics in the King James Bible are words that were added by the translators to help the reader better understand the intent of the passage translated from the original languages. The same as for me (Michael Johnson, Sr.), I added all my precepts and word appellations using italics. To give the reader notice, they are not part of scripture. They were added for clarity only, and give the reader a better understanding of what the passage is saying and what the words mean at the time the word was being in the Bible. Word appellations are used to give the reader knowledge of geographical locations (as of a region, village, or vineyard), or person(s) name meaning, and location, city, place, and wilderness locations. Appellations are also used to identify the characteristics and acts by appellations.

Book Maimonides Political Thought

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a series of studies that cover a wide range of issues relating to Maimonides' political thought, including the basis for political and ethical knowledge; the notion of the "good"; imitatio Dei; apparent contradictions in his position on ethics; the conception of God that he attempts to inculcate to Jewish society at large; and his novel approach to the love and fear of God. Taking into account his medieval Aristotelian and Jewish sources, these explorations also deal with some of the opposing considerations that Maimonides had to balance in developing and presenting his positions on such subjects as the nature of divine law, the static vs. dynamic dimensions of Mosaic law, prophetic and rabbinic authority within Judaism, the reasons for the commandments, and martyrdom. A close reading of the manner in which he formulates his views, in light of their literary and intellectual-historical contexts, allows us a better glimpse of how profound and subtle Maimonides is as a thinker and an educator.
