Download or read book A Voice to Universalists Classic Reprint written by Hosea Ballou and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice to Universalists The work, here laid before the public, consists partly of original pieces written by Mr. Ballou for this volume, and partly of articles from his pen which have already appeared in different periodicals. To the former class belong A General Epistle to Universalists, Momentous Questions, Essay on Universalism, Advice to Young Men who design to enter the Ministry, The Doctrine of Universal Salvation, and The Utility of Evil. The latter class is made up of such selections, from his writings, as it was thought desirable to preserve in a more permanent form than that in which they first appeared. One object with the Publisher was to call forth, from the venerable Author, some new contributions to the great cause to which he has devoted his life; some additional counsels, which his brethren may receive as a legacy, and some fresh testimony which the world may regard as the maturest dictate of long experience and reflection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centenary Voices: Or, a Part of the Work of the Women of the Universalist Church, From Its Centenary Year to the Present Time The Woman's Centenary Association grew up out of conditions unusually sterile, and obstacles most difficult to meet and overcome. N o attempt had been made, previous to that of the Murray Fund, to unite the people in any enterprise for the general good; and a feeling existed in many minds not merely indifferent, but decidedly opposed to broad universal missionary effort. There had never been any formal attempt to plant the Universalist Church on foreign soil, and infinite faith and courage have been exercised to win the people step by step to a generous recognition of the fact that Universal means all men everywhere; first the home, then the home Church, then the State, then the general body elected to serve the Church, and, finally, the Church universal throughout the world, without distinction of race or degree. All must be saved and come unto a knowledge of the truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Universalist Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Universalist Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universalist, Vol. 1 Our church of England friend reciprocated our sentiment and lamented, as we do, the narrowing influence thus exerted over the heart, an influence which is one of the first fruits of such divisions. We were right in our conjecture, that the title of our magazine was a designation our worthy friend had never thought of in connection with religion and theology; and, when we frankly told him we were Universalists, he looked thoughtful and exclaimed, I like that term 1 Not that it conveyed to him all that we associate with it; but by it were suggested principles in which his Christian charity and generous spirit fully sympathized - principles which, in their proper development and final results, embody our highest aspirations, and confirm our most holy faith. To maintain, on the one hand, that we are not the advocates of party - that our object is unsectarian; and to assert, on the other, a distinct individuality by the assumption of an appellative which must dis tinguish us from any and all ecclesiastical bodies, may appear somewhat paradoxical. We observe, and we are anxious to be understood, that since a magazine, such as that with whose interests we have the-honor to be identified, must have a name to distinguish it from others of the same species, just as the writer must have a name to distinguish himfrom other men, that name was adopted which should most honestly, and most accurately express or suggest the principles we designed to advocate. And, so far from proposing to ourselves another addition to those ecclesiastical bodies, of which, as such, the New Testament knows nothing whatever, and to which we believe the Scriptures to be opposed, we have been anxious, and take this opportunity seriously to protest, against any such design. And it is a satisfaction to us to know, that, among our contributors and subscribers, there are members of various communities - Christians of different denominations. Our great object is sufficiently made known in the pages Of the volume which we now have the pleasure to present to our readers. And we verily believe, that the errors which we oppose are as much the cause and fuel of those divisions which disgrace the Christian world, as the truths for which it is our privilege to contend are antagonistic to the spirit of sectarianism and party. Carroll unveils God as the source of being and integrating all the components of life, demonstrating the essential connection points within humanity's relationship to the divine, as portrayed within a matrix. Presenting God as the universal Father of humanity, he explains the significance of both the divine logos, where God is seen face-to-face with himself, and the humanity of the divine. Timothy does this all while keeping the reader mindful of his own origin, identity, and destiny. The unique blending of the spiritual and the theological makes this book profoundly accessible to both the young in faith and those who are mature, from the idea of a spiritual matrix to insights into the doctrine of hell, while closing the book with his own ninety-five theses on universal reconciliation and love.

Book Universalism as It Is

Download or read book Universalism as It Is written by Edwin F. Hatfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Universalism as It Is: Or d104 Book of Modern Universalism in America Error, to be successfully combated, must be known. A minute acquaintance with the resources of an enemy is indispensable to a prosperous campaign. A mode of attack suited to one position would be utterly unsuitable to one of a different character. Ignorance, in such a case, is defeat. These remarks apply with peculiar force to the controversy with Universalism. A sect has grown up in this land within the memory of those now living, which, with loud professions of charity and universal benevolence, under the above name, arrogates to itself the peculiar distinction of being the only depositary of religious truth. Insignificant at first by reason of their entire want of a profound acquaintance with the Scriptures, and the disreputable character of those who became the first converts to the creed, it has now acquired importance by the extent of its prevalence. With a diligence and industry worthy of a better cause, they have insinuated themselves into the confidence of the community in various sections of the country, until they now claim to be regarded as one of the most numerous religious sects in the land. They are, in their own estimation, ('Life of Murray, p. 272, ) "the fifth, (if not the fourth) in order, in point of numbers, respectabiltiy and talent, among the denominations of the land; - among the greatest reading people in the Union; having no less than nineteen or twenty periodicals, issuing every month at least 100,000 sheets to 25, or 30,000 subscribers, among at least thrice that number of regular readers." "In the southern and western States," they say, "the doctrine is extending its progress faster than preachers can follow to proclaim and defend it; while in the eastern and middle States, ministers, laymen, and even whole societies are embracing this calumniated doctrine, and coming over to its avowal and support." Such were the pretensions of the sect eight years since. Their statistics for the present year show that they have lost none of "this same confident boasting." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universalists Quarterly and General Review, 1882, Vol. 19 DID Jesus believe in demons? If so, does not the author ity and the divine enlightenment we ascribe to him require us to believe in them? Are we not to credit his testimony? If he did not believe in them, how are we to explain that complete system of demonology which may fairly be deduced from his reported words?
