But such contracted forms of expression render the phraseology somewhat ambiguous in its meaning, and would make it almost unintelligible in writing. The natives of Western Africa have also little idea of the value and divisions of time; hence some ambiguity occasionally arises in relating the circum stances of an event. The author has endeavoured to fix the value of the tenses of the verb with as much precision as usage will admit of.
