Book A Visual Study of the Flow Model in the Later Stages of Laminar turbulent Transition on a Flat Plate

Download or read book A Visual Study of the Flow Model in the Later Stages of Laminar turbulent Transition on a Flat Plate written by C. A. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of aspects of transition from laminar to turbulent flow were investigated on a flat plate with free stream water velocities between .75 feet per second and 1.2 feet per second. The study was primarily visual, using dye techniques, although some measurements were made using a hot film anemometer. Also investigated were the later stages of natural transition. Dye patterns associated with the chain of events leading from laminar to turbulent flow in natural transition were analyzed. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Flow Structure of the Turbulent Boundary Layer

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Flow Structure of the Turbulent Boundary Layer written by Peter W. Runstadler and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of visual and quantitative measurements is presented, providing a physical picture of the turbulent boundary layer flow structure on a flat plate. The flow structure is shown to consist of three zones, each zone has a one to one correspondence to the well known regions of the u+, y+ mean velocity profile. A wall layer region is shown to exist below y+ = 10. An apparently fully turbulent region exists corresponding to the logarithmic ''law of the wall'' and the ''buffer'' region. An intermittent zone appears to agree closely with the ''wake'' deviation region. An entirely new result of the investigation is the delineation of the structure of the wall layer region. This region is shown to contain a relatively regular structure of low and high velocity fluid streaks alternating in the span direction, together with the ejection of low momentum fluid into the outer flow. Correlations are given for the rate of ejection and the streak spacing. A qualitative description of other features of the wall layer region and the character of the remainder of the boundary layer flow structure is presented. (Author).

Book An Experimental Study of Turbulent Boundary Layer on Rough Walls

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Turbulent Boundary Layer on Rough Walls written by C. K. Liu and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental data are presented on flow structure, mean, and fluctuating velocities in turbulent boundary layers over a family of flat surfaces with transverse roughness elements made of square bars of variable spacing. All flows were incompressible and had zero streamwise pressure gradient. The flow structures are described for surfaces extending from hydraulically smooth to fully rough. A distinct flow pattern is observed in the wall region for each of four cases: smooth, skimming, wake-interference and isolated-roughness flow. Maximum roughness was observed with a ratio of gap to bar width of approximately 11. The most obvious effect of an increase in surface roughness is the distinct increase of turbulence production and the concomittant increase in the value of eddy viscosity. It is shown that this increase in eddy viscosity increases the total thickness of the layer in the same way that an increase in molecular viscosity would do in a laminar layer. The normalization of eddy viscosity for the outer portion of the layer as suggested by Clauser is found to apply to the rough surfaces studied. (Author).
