Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to the Russians in Central Asia The advance of Russia throughout the whole of Central Asia to the frontiers of Persia, Afghanistan and into the huge Chinese Empire is a matter of exceeding interest to every British subject. The number of books written by Englishmen acquainted with these distant regions is necessarily small, from the difficulty encountered in travelling through the Russian Asiatic Provinces. Book Russia in Central Asia in 1889 The Anglo Russian Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia in Central Asia in 1889 The Anglo Russian Question Classic Reprint written by George Nathaniel Curzon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in Central Asia in 1889& The Anglo-Russian Question A few words of explanation as to what these chap ters do, and what they do not, profess to be. Their pre tensions are of no very exalted order. They are, in the main, a record of a journey, taken under circumstances of exceptional advantage and ease, through a country, the interest of which to English readers consists no longer in its physical remoteness and impenetrability, but rather in the fact that those conditions have just been superseded by a new order of things, capable at any moment of bringing it under the stern and immediate notice of Englishmen, as the theatre of imperial diplo macy; possibly - quad di avertant omen - as the thresh old of international war. Travel nowadays, at least in parts to which the railway has penetrated, is unattended with risk and is relatively shorn of adventure - a de cadence which separates my story by a wide gulf of division from that of earlier visitors to the Transcaspian regions. These pursued their explorations slowly and laboriously, either in disguise or armed to the teeth, amid suspicious and fanatical peoples, over burning deserts and through intolerable sands. The later traveller, as he follows in comparative comfort the route of which they were the suffering pioneers, may at once admire their heroism and profit by their experi ence. With such forerunners, therefore, I do not pre sume to enter into the most remote competition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Rival Powers in Central Asia

Download or read book The Rival Powers in Central Asia written by Józef Popowski and published by . This book was released on 1893 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rival Powers in Central Asia is an English translation of a work originally published in Vienna in 1890 under the title Antagonismus der Englischen und Russischen Interessen in Asien: Eine Militär-Politische Studie (The antagonism between English and Russian interests in Asia: A military-political study). The study analyzes what the author sees as the threat to British India posed by an aggressive Russia. The author characterizes the Russian Empire as a "reckless, expansive force," which, having reached its natural limits on the seas to the east and the north, was now concentrating "all its energies on the South, and chiefly in the direction of Constantinople and Central Asia." While the Russian thrust into Central Asia is portrayed as a threat mainly to British interests, Russian ambitions toward Constantinople are seen as most threatening to the continental European powers, "Austria in particular," which "cannot at any cost permit Russia to take possession of Constantinople." On this basis, the author argues that it is in Great Britain's interest to join a "Central European Coalition" with Austria-Hungary and imperial Germany. Chapter four, the longest in the book, entitled "Strategical Relations of the Two States," assesses the relative strengths of Russia and Great Britain in a contest for control of Central Asia and ultimately India, with sections on land forces, naval forces, and the transport and logistical routes likely to be used by each power. The concluding chapter discusses the benefits that Great Britain would gain by allying with the Central European powers against Russia, stresses the value to those powers of a British alliance, and argues that only through such an alliance would Britain be able to retain its hold on India. Ultimately, of course, the envisioned alliance did not come about, as some two decades later Great Britain allied with Russia (and France) and against Germany and Austria-Hungary in the great European conflict that came to be known as World War I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Asia: A History of Russian Turkestan and the Central Asian Khanates From the Earliest Times A time when Russia's movements in the East are being watched by all with such keen interest seems a fitting one for the appearance of a work dealing with her Central Asian possessions. That eternal struggle between East and West, to quote Sir William Hunter's apt phrase, has made Russia supreme in Central Asia, as it has made England mistress of India: and thus it has come to pass that two. Of the greatest European Powers find themselves face to face on the Asiatic Continent. On the results of that contact depends the future of Asia. Ten years have elapsed since Lord Curzon of Kedleston published his work entitled Russia in Central Asia, and in the interval no book on this subject has appeared in English. The intervening period has been one of change almost of transformation - in the countries so brilliantly described by the present Viceroy of India. The authors of the present work have visited independently the land of which they write. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and Russia in Central Asia, Vol. 1 The words used here will be proved true, and the only effectual remedies against the evil are those bold measures from which timid spirits would shrink. The pith of the whole argument is to be found in the fact that we are now strong enough to solve the Central Asian Question wholly in our own favour. Are we to put Off action until the tables are turned and Russia is more prepared than she is at present, while we may have grown less strong? Or shall we finish the business out of hand?
