Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to the Mission Indians of California A brief recapitulation of facts would seem to be the best introduction to, and explanation of, the following report of my recent visit to the Mission Indians of California. In my report of a previous visit, published by the Indian Rights Association, it was stated that: "At my earnest request the Government has appointed special counsel to take up and defend the rights of these Indians, but appointed him to serve without compensation. It seems evident, therefore, that this effort must be sustained and pushed by our Association." It is known to many that the Indian Rights Association became responsible for the fees of Mr. Ward, the special counsel appointed by the Attorney-General, neither the Department of Justice nor the Interior Department having any funds to use for such purposes. The case of Byrnes vs. The San Jacinto Indians came to trial last summer, and was decided in favor of the plaintiff, and, failing to induce the Government to stand sponsor for the case, and assume responsibility for costs and indemnity to plaintiff pending an appeal to the Supreme Court, the Secretary of the Indian Rights Association gave his personal check for $3300, which has been deposited with the clerk of the Court for San Diego County, California, to await the issue of this appeal. By the timely arrival of this check, the immediate ejectment of 200 Indians from the homes and lands on which, by concession of plaintiff, they have lived continuously since 1815, was delayed at least until the Supreme Court of the State shall confirm the decree of the lower court. It thus appears that the Indian Rights Association has addressed itself earnestly to the effort to settle definitely the question whether or not these poor people have a valid legal, as they undoubtedly have an equitable, title to their lands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Missions and Mission Indians of California: Fully Illustrated In 1767, King Charles III. Of Spain ordered an expedition to sail, to take possession of the Cali fornias, convert the Indians found there, and protect the country from the encroachments of Russians from the north, which the latter then owned. Jose de G'alvez, the visitador general of New Spain, - a man of great foresight and ability, - to whom the Americans of the South California of to day owe much, - was the man to whom this important undertaking was intrusted. The only knowledge of where he was to go was obtained from the very indefinite 'survey of Vizcaino, yet so closely was this first definite scheme of colonization and conversion planned that there were orders to plant a mission and garr1son first at San Diego, then at Monterey, and then one, half way between, to be called Buena Ventura. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Condition and Needs of the Mission Indians of California: To the Commissioner of Indian Affairs This estimate probably falls considerably short of the real numbers, as there are no doubt in hiding, so to speak, in remote and inaccessible spots, many individuals, families, or even villages, that have never been counted. These Indians are living for the most part in small and isolated villages; some on reservations set apart for them by Executive 'order; some on Government land not reserved, and some upon lands included within the boundaries Of confirmed Mexican grants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Condition of the Mission Indians of Southern California In 1767 Spain sent a military expedition to conquer California and with it sent a band of missionary priests with orders to convert and civilize the Indians; and so successfully did they fulfil their appointed task that in thirty-one years they had gathered in the Mission communi ties Indian converts, and had taught them many of the arts and industries of civilized life, so many, indeed, that the list would surprise those careless observers who declare that Indians are naturally lazy simply because we have forced them to remain unemployed. Book Glimpses of California and the Missions

Download or read book Glimpses of California and the Missions written by Helen Hunt Jackson and published by . This book was released on 1903 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) of Amherst, Massachusetts, turned to writing after the death of her first husband in 1863. Her marriage to William Jackson, a wealthy Denver Quaker, brought her to the West in 1875, and she soon became a Native American rights activist. She was sent west as part of a federal commission to investigate conditions among the Mission Indians in 1882, and her experiences as part of that commission inspired her famous 1884 novel Ramona. Glimpses of California (1902) reprints articles Jackson first published in 1883. She offers a narrative history of the California mission system and the early years of Los Angeles as a Hispanic community and the work of Junipero Serra as well as an analysis of the fate of the Mission Indians after those missions were dismantled. This section of the book is followed by a chapter on Southern California's "outdoor industries" -- livestock ranching and farming -- and one on Jackson's visit to Oregon.

Download or read book The Case of the Mission Indians in Southern California written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case of the Mission Indians in Southern California: And the Action of the Indian Rights Association in Supporting the Defence of Their Legal Rights Helen Hunt Jackson died in San Francisco during the past summer, without seeing the fruition of her labors; but a few weeks before her death she gladly granted an interview to Prof. Painter, the agent of the Indian Rights Association at Washington. She greatly rejoiced at his visit, even at the moment when her long illness was fast approaching its fatal close, because she saw in him one who represented the better feeling of the nation toward that wronged and helpless race whom she had so greatly loved. Upon her deathbed she committed to the hands of the Indian Rights Association as a solemn legacy the redress of past wrongs, present sufferings, and the future hopes of the Mission Indians. Mrs. Jackson died in cheerful confidence that the Association would be faithful to the trust committed to it. With a sense of responsibility for the execution of this trust the Association makes the present statement of the case at issue for the information of the public. Facts In The Case Of The Mission Indians. The following excerpts from a letter written by Hon. Hiram Price, Ex-Commissioner of Indian Affairs, are important as throwing light upon the case of the Mission Indians. This letter, addressed to the Hon. Secretary of the Interior, is dated at Washington, January 10th, 1884, and is as follows: (Excerpts from Commissioner Price's Letter.') "The injustice done the Mission Indians, and their deplorable condition, have been set forth by several Commissioners and treated of at length by various Annual Reports of this office, especially those of 1875 and 1880, and Congress has been repeatedly solicited to interfere in their behalf. Through the failure of Congress to afford any relief their condition has been rapidly growing worse, until, at the present time, they are threatened with the total loss of the lands they have cultivated for years, and from which they have derived their support with but trifling aid from the Government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Indians of California As regards the province of speech, I feel no such hesitation of competence, but here again the subject matter is an essentially dis tinct one, besides being of a nature which generally impresses as technical. The relation of language to civilization is undoubtedly closer than that of head form or skin color, but it is far from in timate. I have therefore considered speech only in so far as the accumulating knowledge of the languages of California has led to their classification on a genetic or historical basis and thus contributes to the insight of the origin, movements, and relationship of the several nations.
