Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to the Antipodes: With Some Reminiscences of a Sojourn in Australia So many books have been written upon the subject of which the following few pages attempt to treat, that it would seem almost unpardon able in the present instance to swell the number by adding such an insignificant item as this. But it would be even more unpardonable were such a production to come out without a preface: such a proceeding would display a want of courtesy, and indicate a degree of vanity which might materially prejudice its reception. It is doubtful if this prefatory notice will ever be read; yet still, under the circumstances, it will at least offer some apology for the perpetration of the offence. Download or read book Urbanizing Frontiers written by Penelope Edmonds and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frontiers were not confined to the bush, backwoods, or borderlands. Towns and cities at the farthest reaches of empire were crucial to the settler colonial project. Yet the experiences of Indigenous peoples in these urban frontiers have been overshadowed by triumphant narratives of progress. This book explores the lives of Indigenous peoples and settlers in two Pacific Rim cities Victoria, British Columbia, and Melbourne, Australia. Built on Indigenous lands and overtaken by gold rushes, these cities emerged between 1835 and 1871 in significantly different locations, yet both became cross-cultural and segregated sites of empire. This innovative study traces how these spaces, and the bodies in them, were transformed, sometimes in violent ways, creating new spaces and new polities.

Book Political Corruption in Australia

Download or read book Political Corruption in Australia written by Peter John Perry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Despite considerable expansion, the scholarly literature on political corruption has remained fragmentary, often polarized, consisting either of sweeping systematic statements, or case-specific examples. Perry bridges this gap and proves the need for further such study in this most worthwhile examination of the place of political corruption in Australia. The Australian experience is paid thorough, yet concise attention and then it is related to the concept of political corruption in its various and changing forms and interpretations. Assuming no familiarity with the central intellectual issues, Perry lucidly explores them in terms of their method, practice and definition with particular reference to Australia. Primarily suitable for academics interested in politics, geography, development studies, history and sociology, this book’s accessible style also makes it of interest to a general audience.

Book Bigfoot to Mothman

Download or read book Bigfoot to Mothman written by Margo DeMello and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-volume encyclopedia introduces readers to the world's cryptids-those hidden or secret animals believed to exist at the margins of human society-including Bigfoot, Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Mothman. Comprehensive in its scope, this book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to know more about well-known creatures of myth and legend, such as the Chupacabra and the Jersey Devil, and discover lesser-known animals, such as the Bunyip of Australia and the Mamlambo of South Africa. Rather than purport to prove or deny the existence of these creatures, however, this volume classifies them within their respective cultural, historical, and social contexts, allowing readers to appreciate cryptids as cultural artifacts important to societies around the globe. Finally, this book goes beyond the study of the unknown to investigate who believes in cryptids, why they do, and why the study of cryptozoology is as much about understanding cryptids as it is about understanding ourselves.
