Book A Visit to Europe and the Holy Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Visit to Europe and the Holy Land Classic Reprint written by Hiram Francis Fairbanks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to Europe and the Holy Land In the following pages I have endeavored to describe what I saw, and the impressions received, during a visit to some of the most interesting countries of the Old World, from the point of view of an honest and unprejudiced American. The time that I was abroad might be considered by some as insufficient to obtain an intelligent understanding of the matters about which I write. My answer to this is, that I have not attempted the impossible, and I am well aware that few men are able to write a thoroughly philosophical treatise on the historical, political, and social life of even their own native land. I am also cognizant of the fact that many foreigners, after a brief sojourn in other countries, attempt to discuss them intelligently, a work which they oftentimes would not be able to accomplish if they had lived in them their whole lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Land With Glimpses of Europe and Egypt: A Year's Tour What travelers the Americans are I find them everywhere, said a solid, intelligent, good-natured English lady as she reached, almost out of breath, the top of the last ight Of stairs in the lofty tower of the great Cathedral of N otre Dame in Antwerp, and looked a few feet above where I had just climbed to the highest accessible point. She might have added, if She had looked over the lists of our publishers, and how many books of travels they write Every author, I suppose, perceives - though others may not - reasons sufficient to justify his publication. He differs, per haps, in some important respects, from others who have gone over the same ground, or he has so wrought up, arranged, and con densed his materials as to present in a life-like manner just what is most desirable and interesting to readers generally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel, in Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land: Including a Visit to the City of Constantinople, in 1841 and 1842The object which the author of these Notes had in view, in his late tour, was merely the gratification of his'own curiosity. He had no intention of publishing any account of his obser vations, and hence, during his travels he kept very brief notes of the various countries and places visited, the objects of curiosity which attracted his attention, and the every-day scenes and occurrences of his journey. But after his return home, ' the frequent solicitations and earnest entreaties of numerous friends, induced him to prepare his Notes for the press. He has necessarily confined himself in these Notes to very brief sketches, without attempting any detailed de scription. He has carefully avoided all superfluous matter and common-place reflections; presenting to the reader plain facts, in preference to gaudy embellishments, and abstract, verbose and useless observations, which would only increase the size of his boom - Without imparting any intrinsic value to the work. In giving minute desor1ptions of some few objects of great interest, he has occasionally availed himself of some.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For it may be asked, Why publish such a book Our answer is, To meet the wishes of numerous friends, and also to contribute something to the knowledge of the sacred and classical lands within a compass that may be easily read; perhaps moved too by something of the spirit of Juvenal, Shall I be forever 3. Hearer only P* I had for years cherished an intense desire to visit Europe, and especially Palestine, consecrated by the presence and labors of the Prophets, of Christ, and of his Apostles. Without visiting Europe and the Orient, I felt that my education was incomplete, - that there was a vacuum that must be filled up. Through the kindness of the Hon. J. A. J. Cres well, postmaster-general, I procured letters from the Hon. Secretary of State to the consul-general of Egypt, the Consul of Jerusalem, and our Minister at Constantinople Hon. Edward Joy Morris. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Through Europe, the Holy, Land and Egypt Nations as well as individuals have their characteristics and peculiar traits which serve to differentiate them from the rest of the world, and these characteristics affect the very atmosphere and appearance of a land. The traveller in Germany is at once impressed with an all-pervading sense of law and order, of stability and permanence. The people live frugally and economically, extravagance and needless waste being unknown, while the pleasant mutual intercourse of their social life and their sober habits immediately strike the observant visitor in their midst. Their manners are courteous, civil, considerate and frank. Among the institutions of the country the most conspicuous, if not the most important, is easily the army, and well may the nation be proud of its magnificent fighting force of more than half a million well-equipped and well-drilled troops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Vol. 2: Greece, Egypt, and the Holy Land Wusn the author published the first volume of these Travels, he proposed to divide the work into three por tions. The observations made in Greece, Syria, and Egypt, were reserved for the astond part; whether con sisting of one volume, or of more than one. This plan it still pursued; but from the very perplexed state of the geography of the country alluded to by the word Syria the less exce tionable appellation of Paladins was sub stituted, in t e second edition, for that of Syria. The same perplexity has again induced the author to alter what he had thus written, and to consider the present pub lication as containing observations made in Greece, Egypt, and the Holy Land. Download or read book The Holy Land Classic Reprint written by Robert Hichens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Land He was a Breton, he told me. A Breton! And why was he there in the burning African summer, so far from his own gray country? Very simply he told me why. Always, he said, from his earliest youth he had longed to go to the Holy Land, to stand on the sacred spot where Christ had died upon the Cross. He told nothing to any one of his desire, which at last became so keen that secretly he left his home, his native village, and made his way to the nearest seaport. There he saw a ship bound for Algiers. He was so ignorant of geog raphy that he supposed Algiers was a city in Palestine. So he went on board the ship, and presently found him self under the palms of Africa. In Algiers he nearly starved, perhaps would have starved, had he not heard by chance of Staoueli, and of the good Trappists who fed the hungry outside the gate of heaven. One day he walked out of the city, and at last, nearly dead with fatigue and hunger, came to the monastery's door, above which the Blessed Virgin was smiling. The monks took him in, fed him, clothed him, gave him work. And thus it came about that I found him sitting in the shadow of the tower on that burning day of summer.
