Book Elegy to Woodstock Wisconsin and the Decline of the Family Dairy Farm

Download or read book Elegy to Woodstock Wisconsin and the Decline of the Family Dairy Farm written by Thomas Sieger and published by . This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family dairy farm, an institution and economic engine within Wisconsin, is in serious decline. The ripple effect on our rural communities has been disastrous. This book portrays the story of a fictional dairy farmer and his family and the daunting challenges of trying to keep a family farm afloat during an extended period of low milk prices and over supply. The story is set within the Driftless Region of Wisconsin, near the village of Woodstock, in the West Pine River Valley of Richland County. The book uses the rapid growth and decline of the village of Woodstock as a metaphor for the family dairy farm. The author describes the early settlement and growth of Woodstock and the introduction and initial success of family dairy farming in the West Pine River Valley. He weaves into the fictional story of the family farm a perspective on the challenges facing the industry and traces the reasons and course it has taken toward the large herds and more industrial operations that characterize the industry today. The book is richly illustrated with real photographs of the village of Woodstock, the surrounding environs, and dairying operations within both the smaller, iconic stanchion dairy barn and the large free stall industrial barns.

Book Dairy Farming in Mountain Areas

Download or read book Dairy Farming in Mountain Areas written by Vir Singh and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy Farming is one of the key economic activities livestock-dependent farming communities in the mountain areas depend upon. Dairy farming involves natural resource base-forests/rangelands, croplands, livestock breeding-feeding, breeding, health management, marketing and consumption of the products. This book presents wonderful synthesis of the smallholders resource management in the mountains. Smallholders constitute the majority of the mountain communities. Their strategies of resource management this book portrays provide the interesting matter the institutions might like to know about before they being with the interventions into dairy farming. Mountain areas are altogether distinguishable from those of the mainstream plain areas. And so are their production systems. Peri-urban areas in the region constitute the high-pressure areas. Dairy farming in these areas is essentially market-oriented. The book especially characterizes the smallholder dairy farms in the vicinity of urban milk consuming centres. These scenarios are different from those in the remote areas. Smallholder dairy farming has enormous potential. It can contribute to family income, generate gainful employment especially for women, elevate living standards of the producers, fight malnutrition especially amongst children and enhance processes of sustainable agriculture. Crop-livestock-forest/rangeland integrity is a key factor to the sustainability of mountain livelihoods. Augmentation of dairy farming systems leads to the enhanced performance of the overall production system. The book finally discusses perspective based approaches to operationalise sustainability in the mountains. The book, in essence, is a landmark publication in the area of sustainable mountain development. India is the leading milk producer in the world today, which is largely thanks to the smallholders contributions. Dairy development could be one of the key areas to help the country to occupy centre stage in the on-going rapid globalisation processes. This book is an humble attempt to further advance towards this direction. Book Dairy Farming

Download or read book Dairy Farming written by D.F. Don Cooper and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story about Don Cooper from infancy, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, his maternal ancestors emigrated from Germany in the 1850’s. They made their homesteads in Washington County, Wisconsin. Don visited their farms frequently as a youth, and eventually was employed as a farm hand on his mom’s cousin’s farm. Those many visits convinced him that he would become a farmer some day. His Mom’s cousin, Armand (Wimpy) Mertz, became his mentor. Don worked full time for him after graduating from high school. He loved the cows, calves, pigs, chickens, wildlife, and especially the horses. Wimpy knew the names of the trees, weeds, other plants, bugs and all of God’s creation. Don admired his vast knowledge and was thankful for having such a wonderful teacher.I soon realized that my chances of purchasing a farm of our own where pretty slim. I worked on several agricultural related jobs. My friends Paul and Elvira Brunnquell convinced me to go on a blind date with them. Ruth Nienow, was my date; I fell madly in love with her, and prayed that God would convince her to be my beautiful bride. One year later we were married. Her Dad was a farmer, and we decided that we would try to purchase a farm.We saw an ad in the paper, “Farm for rent.” Another ad, “Purebred herd of Holstein cows for sale.” We purchased the cows and rented the farm. It was a nightmare. There was too much work and not enough income. Our landlord died six months later. The next farm was also bad news. The third rented farm was an excellent farm that provided us with the income needed to purchase our own farm. “Dairy Farming A Way of Life’’ describes the many trials and tribulations we endured. The Lord was with us every step of the way. Without His ever presence and guidance, we would not have not have been able to continue farming.

Book The English Dairy Farmer

Download or read book The English Dairy Farmer written by G. E. Fussell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966, this work by G. E. Fussell is a thorough examination of the role played by the English dairy farmer over the past four hundred years. Beginning his study with the cow he gives an account of the improved breeding and feeding methods that make today's cow a totally different beast to that of the Tudor farmer. A chapter is devoted to the cultivation of fodder crops and another to the comfort of the cow for, as the author states, pleasant conditions are an important factor in encouraging its productivity. The dairy industry, no less than any other in the nineteenth century, was the scene of numerous devices and inventions designed to improve milking methods. This, together with the development of the sale of milk in a liquid form, is discussed in later chapters. The practical difficulties of transporting milk had until about 1850 caused the major part of the milk produced to be turned into butter and cheese and the varying products of differing regions are fully described. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, however, the number of dairies prepared to retail milk grew in number to accommodate an ever increasing rate of milk consumption. Numerous farming textbooks published during the period and contemporary descriptions of the farming scene form the background for this scholarly appraisal. No other book has treated the English dairy farmer in such detail and, in drawing upon such a wealth of illustrative material to support his conclusions, G. E. Fussell has produced a work which will be valued by all agricultural historians.
