Book Christians and Public Life in Colonial South India 1863 1937

Download or read book Christians and Public Life in Colonial South India 1863 1937 written by Chandra Mallampalli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-07-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how Catholic and Protestant Indians have attempted to locate themselves within the evolving Indian nation. Ironically, British rule in India did not privilege Christians, but pushed them to the margins of a predominantly Hindu society. Drawing upon wide-ranging sources, the book first explains how the Indian judiciary's 'official knowledge' isolated Christians from Indian notions of family, caste and nation. It then describes how different varieties and classes of Christians adopted, resisted and reshaped both imperial and nationalist perceptions of their identity. Within a climate of rising communal tension in India, this study finds immediate relevance.

Book Appropriation and Invention of Tradition

Download or read book Appropriation and Invention of Tradition written by Nandini Bhattacharyya Panda and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, strongly grounded in primary sources, makes an important contribution to the intellectual history of early modern Bengal. It brings to light the complex interpenetration of diverse interests, opinions, and ideologies articulated by various social groups implicated in the process of colonization on the lines of Ranajit Guha's work on property relations in Bengal and Radhika Singha's work on law. There is no comparable work specifically on the subject of Hindu property rights and how these came to be perceived or interpreted in early modern Bengal. The author explores the so-called compendia prepared under British auspices and argues that there was hardly any link between the Smritis and the laws. The latter were determined almost entirely by changing British policy with regard to land revenue and that many of the positive features of Hindu custom like women's rights to property were undermined in the process.

Book India and the Indianness of Christianity

Download or read book India and the Indianness of Christianity written by Robert Eric Frykenberg and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honoring historian Robert Eric Frykenberg--arguably the historian most responsible for promoting studies of intercultural and interreligious interactions in the South Asian context--the essays in this collection avoid the pitfall of Eurocentric, top-down historiographies and instead adopt and adapt Frykenberg's own Eurocentric, bottom-up approach, this accentuating indigenous agency in the emergence of Christianity an as Indian religion. The book features first-time case studies on Christianity in a variety of unusual Indian settings, including tribal societies, and offers original contributions to an understanding of how Indian Christianity was perceived in the post-Independence period by India's governing elite. Several essayists draw heavily on rare archival documentation in the United Kingdom, Germany, and India. The wealth of material and the perspectives gathered here constitute a remarkable volume--a credit to the historian who inspired it--from back cover.

Download or read book Hinduism and Law written by Timothy Lubin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the earliest Sanskrit rulebooks through to the codification of 'Hindu law' in modern times, this interdisciplinary volume examines the interactions between Hinduism and the law. The authors present the major transformations to India's legal system in both the colonial and post colonial periods and their relation to recent changes in Hinduism. Thematic studies show how law and Hinduism relate and interact in areas such as ritual, logic, politics, and literature, offering a broad coverage of South Asia's contributions to religion and law at the intersection of society, politics and culture. In doing so, the authors build on previous treatments of Hindu law as a purely text-based tradition, and in the process, provide a fascinating account of an often neglected social and political history.
