Download or read book A Star in the West a Humble Attempt to Discover the Long Lost Ten Tribes of Israel Preparatory to Their Return to Their Beloved City Jerusalem written by Elias Boudinot and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Boudinot advances plausible reasons in support of his theory that the aborigines of America were the lineal descendants of the "long lost tribes of Israel," and collects and imbodies many interesting facts on that subject. The opinion that the American Indians are descended from the Jews, is an idea that has been in vogue ever since their discovery. While the mere fact that this opinion is so frequently revived does not prove, there is any real resemblance, Dr. Elias Boudinot brings together many interesting facts in support of the theory of migration of the ten tribes of Israel from the regions into which they were carried captive by Salmanazer, king of Assyria, to the straits of Kamchatka, across which they passed to the American continent. In support of his theory, Boudinot provides instances of close similarities between Israelites and Native Americans in the following areas: * Their language, * Their received traditions, * Their established customs and habits, * Their known religious rites and ceremonies, * And lastly, their publick worship, and religious opinions and prejudices. Of these lost tribes present in the Americas, Boudinot writes: "There is a possibility, that these unhappy children of misfortune, may yet be proved to be the descendants of Jacob and the long lost tribes of Israel. And if so, that though cast off for their heinous transgressions, they have not been altogether foresaken; and will hereafter appear to have been, in all their dispersions and wanderings, the subjects of God's divine protection and gracious care." About the author: Elias Boudinot (1740 - 1821) was a lawyer and statesman from Elizabeth, New Jersey who was a delegate to the Continental Congress (more accurately referred to as the Congress of the Confederation) and served as President of Congress from 1782 to 1783. He was elected as a U.S. Congressman for New Jersey following the American Revolutionary War. He was appointed by President George Washington as Director of the United States Mint, serving from 1795 until 1805. Boudinot, after his retirement, devoted himself to a life of Christian beneficence. In 1772 he was chosen a trustee of the College of New Jersey, in which office he continued until his death, founding in 1805, at an expense of three thousand dollars, the Cabinet of Natural History. In 1812 he became a corporate member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, and in 1816 the first president of the American Bible Society, contributing to its funds ten thousand dollars, and aiding also in the erection of the first Bible House. Other works by Boudinot include: * 1790, "The Age of Revelation, or the Age of Reason shown to be an Age of Infidelity;" * 1793, a Fourth of July oration, delivered at Elizabeth Town before the New Jersey Society of the Cincinnati; * 1806, "The Life of the Rev. William Tennent;" * 1811, an address delivered before the New Jersey Bible Society; * 1815, "Second Advent of the Messiah."

Book Old Canaan in a New World

Download or read book Old Canaan in a New World written by Elizabeth Fenton and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were indigenous Americans descendants of the lost tribes of Israel? From the moment Europeans realized Columbus had landed in a place unknown to them in 1492, they began speculating about how the Americas and their inhabitants fit into the Bible. For many, the most compelling explanation was the Hebraic Indian theory, which proposed that indigenous Americans were the descendants of the ten lost tribes of Israel. For its proponents, the theory neatly explained why this giant land and its inhabitants were not mentioned in the Biblical record. In Old Canaan in a New World, Elizabeth Fenton shows that though the Hebraic Indian theory may seem far-fetched today, it had a great deal of currency and significant influence over a very long period of American history. Indeed, at different times the idea that indigenous Americans were descended from the lost tribes of Israel was taken up to support political and religious positions on diverse issues including Christian millennialism, national expansion, trade policies, Jewish rights, sovereignty in the Americas, and scientific exploration. Through analysis of a wide collection of writings—from religious texts to novels—Fenton sheds light on a rarely explored but important part of religious discourse in early America. As the Hebraic Indian theory evolved over the course of two centuries, it revealed how religious belief and national interest intersected in early American history.

Book The Ten Tribes of Israel Or the True History of the North American Indians

Download or read book The Ten Tribes of Israel Or the True History of the North American Indians written by Timothy Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compiler Timothy Jenkins in his 1883 book "The Ten Tribes of Israel" gathers together a vast array of different facts, stories, legends, anecdotes, archaeological discoveries, language comparisons, etc., from a vast array of different sources to support the claim first propounded by the educated Cherokee that the American Indians are descendants of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel. MANY years ago, the attention of the compiler of the following pages was first called to the subject by hearing a lecture delivered by a highly educated Cherokee Indian, on the manners and customs of the various Indian tribes of North America. During the course of his remarks, he stated that when he came to study the Hebrew language, he was astonished to find so much of his own language that was pure Hebrew. And after enumerating the various words of his own language that were Hebrew, he found them to exceed fifty. "And," said he, "we were taught this by our ancestors, and they received it from their Hebrew ancestors, the Ten Tribes." And furthermore, he stated that he was as firmly convinced that the Indian tribes of North America were descendents of the Ten Tribes of Israel, as he was of any other fact. This statement induced us to examine history on this question, and we have found many facts corroborating the testimony of the Red Man of the forest. Though differing from some other writers on this subject, we have the testimony of a number of the most eminent men of America to sustain our position. The ten lost tribes were the ten of the twelve tribes of ancient Israel that were said to have been deported from the Kingdom of Israel after its conquest by the Neo-Assyrian Empire circa 722 BCE. These are the tribes of Reuben, Simeon, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Manasseh and Ephraim. Claims of descent from the "lost" tribes have been proposed in relation to many groups, and some religions espouse a messianic view that the tribes will return. In the 7th and 8th centuries CE, the return of the lost tribes was associated with the concept of the coming of the messiah. The Jewish historian Josephus (37-100 CE) wrote that "the ten tribes are beyond the Euphrates till now, and are an immense multitude and not to be estimated in numbers." An example of the various discoveries in America evidencing Israelite presence includes an 1853 discovery of "a silver coin found last summer in Michigan, about twenty miles from Detroit, two feet under the surface of the earth. The coin is about the size of an American half dollar, not so great in circumference but thicker. On one side is represented a censer with smoking incense, with a Hebrew inscription, 'Jewish Shekel:" on the other, also, is a Hebrew inscription, "The Holy Jerusalem," with a representation of an olive tree, or, perhaps, palm tree."
