Book A Video Self Modeling Intervention to Modify Aggressive Behaviors in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities

Download or read book A Video Self Modeling Intervention to Modify Aggressive Behaviors in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities written by Kate M. Sadler and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the efficacy of a video self-modeling and functional behavior assessment intervention on a traditionally under-represented population. Students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disabilities (ID) are prone to higher rates of aggressive behavior that can be resistant to treatment. Under the frameworks of Behaviorism and Social Cognitive Theory an intervention was developed to decrease aggressive behaviors and increase self-regulated behavior. A multiple baseline design across stimulus conditions with inter-subject replication was conducted to explore the effects of the intervention. Data was collected on both the rate of aggressive behaviors and the use of a replacement behavior which fostered socially appropriate self-regulation. The data indicate that both participants demonstrated a decrease in aggressive behavior immediately following intervention across all stimulus conditions. Data collected on the replacement behavior indicated a change from baseline to intervention but results differed across participants.

Book Seeing is Believing

Download or read book Seeing is Believing written by Tom Buggey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video self-modeling (VSM) is a proven and effective method for teaching new or more advanced skills and behaviors to people with autism. The technique uses homemade videos (created by parents, teachers, or therapists) to demonstrate a desired behavior. The key feature of any self-modeling video is that the person modeling the behavior in the video is the same person watching the video. VSM allows a person with autism to see himself performing the very skill he is trying to learn. This is accomplished through careful editing and manipulation of video footage, transforming it into a cohesive teaching tool. And the process is a lot easier than you may think! Seeing Is Believing begins with an overview of the research and science behind VSM and insights into why it is a particularly good teaching method for people with autism and other developmental disabilities. It then explains the process of making self-modeling videos from start to finish, including how to: choose the behavior/skill to teach conduct a task analysis select and use camcorders and video software storyboard video scenes plan and shoot footage transfer the video to a VCR, DVD, or computer edit and manipulate the footage keep track of and interpret data These videos can teach or modify a wide variety of behaviors and skills, such as controlling tantrums, increasing the frequency and length of verbal responses, making requests, interacting with peers, and solving math problems. Seeing Is Believing is a good companion book to Functional Behavior Assessment for People with Autism and Stop That Seemingly Senseless Behavior! For further information on VSM, go to siskinvsm.org. Here youwill find a blog that provides additional advice and consultation via email on VSM methods, sample videos, FAQs, and a discussion forum with professionals in the field. siskinvsm.org will become operational in March 2009.

Book The Efficacy of Video Self modeling in Ameliorating Aggressive Behavior Among Students Identified as At risk Within a Response to Intervention Paradigm

Download or read book The Efficacy of Video Self modeling in Ameliorating Aggressive Behavior Among Students Identified as At risk Within a Response to Intervention Paradigm written by Michelle G. La Spata and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of video self-modeling (VSM) with early elementary-aged children who have not been evaluated as having a disability entitling them to special education services, but who have been identified by their teachers as exhibiting aggressive behavior within the school setting and were “at-risk” for experiencing educational difficulties due to behavior. Eight students from two elementary schools received the VSM intervention and their data were analyzed as part of this study. Teachers and parents completed the BRIEF and SSIS, and students were observed at baseline and after the intervention. Half of all observations were conducted with two raters in order to assess inter-rater reliability. Primary analyses of observational data included visual analysis of level, variability, and trend, as well as statistical analysis using two nonparametric techniques (i.e., NAP and Tau-U) and one parametric technique (i.e., Allison-MT regression). Analysis of clinical and nominally significant changes on the BRIEF and the SSIS were conducted by obtaining the reliable change index (RCI). The findings of this study indicated that VSM is a viable intervention for addressing aggressive behavior among at-risk elementary-aged students. Improvements in behavior were observed for seven out of eight participants, particularly among participants who displayed more aggression at baseline. Teachers also reported clinically significant changes in behavior for some participants on the BRIEF and the Problem Behaviors scale on the SSIS; however, the VSM intervention did not affect parent ratings on those same scales nor did it affect the Social Skills scale on the SSIS, which may reflect the items comprising those scales. These findings demonstrate that school psychologists can use VSM as a secondary prevention tool in working with students who display aggressive behaviors; however, it is recommended that school psychologists are cognizant of the methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of VSM among at-risk students, who may not display significant behavioral deficits.

Book Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis

Download or read book Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis written by Mickey Keenan and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a successful educational method for developing social and communication skills in children with autism. The use of video modelling in ABA programmes has demonstrated great effectiveness in teaching behavioural skills to autistic children, and this book explains how and why. Video modelling is an easy-to-use behaviour modification technique that uses videotaped rather than 'live' scenarios for the child to observe, concentrating the focus of attention for the child with autism and creating a highly effective stimulus for learning. Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis provides a practical introduction to the technique, its objectives, strategies for use and evidence of its success. Illustrative case examples are supported by detailed diagrams and photographs, with clear, accessible explanations. Video Modelling and Behaviour Analysis will be a welcome addition to the practical literature on autism interventions for parents of autistic children and the professionals working with them.

Book A Video Self modeling Intervention for Postsecondary Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book A Video Self modeling Intervention for Postsecondary Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Nigel Paree Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities are experiencing increased enrollment of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These students often demonstrate difficulties in social situations, such as interacting with peers or understanding social cues. As a result, students diagnosed with ASD can seem socially awkward and engage in inappropriate behaviors in social contexts. Currently, there are few studies that examine social skills interventions for college students diagnosed with ASD. A well-established intervention for addressing social skill development is video-self modeling (VSM). Until now, VSM research has focused on primary and secondary students, without investigating this intervention's effects on the social skills of individuals in the postsecondary setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VSM on social skills for individuals diagnosed with ASD in postsecondary settings. In this study, we examined the effects of VSM on social skills (i.e., social initiations, eye contact, and pausing) using a multiple baseline design across therapists and a multiple baseline design across participants with generalization probes. Results demonstrated high levels of response to VSM for three participants compared to baseline conditions, and moderate response for the fourth participant.

Book Video Modeling Video Feedback and Video Self modeling to Teach Communication and Play Skills to Preschool and Elementary Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Video Modeling Video Feedback and Video Self modeling to Teach Communication and Play Skills to Preschool and Elementary Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Video modeling, video feedback, and video self-modeling are interventions developed to increase appropriate communication and play skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. In research completed between 1989 and 2013, children between the ages of 2 and 15 years old with autism spectrum disorder were participants in studies completed to study the effectiveness of these interventions. The majority of these studies concluded an increase in the target behavior or behaviors. A few studies reported inconclusive results due to modification made to the study or mixed results of effectiveness among the studies' participants. Limitations of these studies include small number of participants, use of prompts and reinforcement in some studies, age of participants and limited review of generalization of target skills. Suggestions for further studies include extensive research on generalization of target skills, larger groups of participants and study of older participants with autism spectrum disorder."--leaf 3.

Book The Applicability of Video Self modeling for Adults with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities

Download or read book The Applicability of Video Self modeling for Adults with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities written by Lauren E. Cox and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video Self-Modeling (VSM) has shown to be an effective intervention in modifying maladaptive behaviors in children, particularly those with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD). Although the effectiveness of VSM with children with ID/DD has been well established in the extant literature, considerably fewer studies have addressed the applicability of VSM with adults of the same population. Thus, the goal of the current study was to examine the utility of VSM with three adults with ID/DD, specifically targeting table manners as the behavior of interest for the intervention. Two aspects of table manners were measured utilizing a multiple baseline design: food spillage on the person and appropriate napkin use. Data were graphed and analyzed on the basis of level, trend, and variability. Results indicated that the intervention was successful with Participant 2 on the appropriate napkin use variable, but not on food spillage on the person. Participants 1 and 3 did not evidence significant changes in behavior following the introduction of the VSM intervention. Possible reasons for the limited success of this intervention include the complexity of the target behaviors, age of participants at age of intervention, and lack of changes in environment to reinforce learning gained from videos. Future research should examine possible limits of the VSM technique as well as ways of utilizing the VSM procedure to function most effectively with older adults.

Book Using Video Self Modeling to Increase Social Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Using Video Self Modeling to Increase Social Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Bryndis K. Andrade and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for effective interventions to improve the social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that are feasible to implement in the general education classroom has been well documented. Video self-modeling (VSM) interventions have produced rapid, durable positive behavioral changes that have been generalized beyond the intervention setting for individuals with a wide variety of conditions including ASD. In this study VSM was used as an intervention for increasing the use of spontaneous verbal communication during cooperative math activities with peers by three Hispanic boys ages 5 and 6 who had high functioning (HF) ASD. No defensible intervention effects were demonstrated in this experiment. It was likely that the target social communication skills were beyond the participants' current skill sets at least for the context in which those skills were used, a cooperative math activity. Possible implications, limitations, and future research were discussed.

Book Single case Intervention Research

Download or read book Single case Intervention Research written by Thomas R. Kratochwill and published by Applying Psychology in the Sch. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to remarkable methodological and statistical advances in recent years, Single-Case design (SCD) research has become a viable and often essential option for researchers in applied psychology, education, and related fields. This text is a compendium of information and tools for researchers considering SCD research, a methodology in which one or several participants (or other units) comprise a systematically-controlled experimental intervention study. SCD is a highly flexible method of conducting applied intervention research where it is not feasible or practical to collect data from traditional groups of participants. Initial chapters lay out the key components of SCDs, from articulating dependent variables to documenting methods for achieving experimental control and selecting an appropriate design model. Subsequent chapters show when and how to implement SCDs in a variety of contexts and how to analyze and interpret results. Authors emphasize key design and analysis tactics, such as randomization, to help enhance the internal validity and scientific credibility of individual studies. This rich resource also includes in-depth descriptions of large-scale SCD research projects being undertaken at key institutions; practical suggestions from journal editors on how to get SCD research published; and detailed instructions for free, user-friendly, web-based randomization software.
