Book A Video Self modeling Intervention for Postsecondary Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book A Video Self modeling Intervention for Postsecondary Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Nigel Paree Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities are experiencing increased enrollment of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These students often demonstrate difficulties in social situations, such as interacting with peers or understanding social cues. As a result, students diagnosed with ASD can seem socially awkward and engage in inappropriate behaviors in social contexts. Currently, there are few studies that examine social skills interventions for college students diagnosed with ASD. A well-established intervention for addressing social skill development is video-self modeling (VSM). Until now, VSM research has focused on primary and secondary students, without investigating this intervention's effects on the social skills of individuals in the postsecondary setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VSM on social skills for individuals diagnosed with ASD in postsecondary settings. In this study, we examined the effects of VSM on social skills (i.e., social initiations, eye contact, and pausing) using a multiple baseline design across therapists and a multiple baseline design across participants with generalization probes. Results demonstrated high levels of response to VSM for three participants compared to baseline conditions, and moderate response for the fourth participant.

Book The Effects of Video Self Modeling on Social Skills with High School Students with Autism

Download or read book The Effects of Video Self Modeling on Social Skills with High School Students with Autism written by Thea Lippoldt and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with autism spectrum disorder face many hardships and struggles in life. Video self-modeling appears to be one educational tool that will help to provide the necessary tools for students to be successful, decreases the potential for the student to be victimized by bullies, and increase the quality of life students will have. This study evaluates the use of video self-modeling with a high school freshman who is on the autism spectrum. Video self-modeling was used to decrease the maladaptive behavior of biting himself. The ABA research design allowed for a two week intervention where the student watched a video of himself demonstrating a replacement behavior instead of biting his arm. The study found a statistically significant difference in the incidents of biting in baseline one and baseline two.

Book The Effects of Video Self Modeling on a Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book The Effects of Video Self Modeling on a Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Julia Jacobi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of video self-modeling on a student with autism who had difficulty transitioning from a preferred activity to a less preferred activity. The major question examined in this study was as follows: Is video self-modeling a useful tool in teaching individuals with autism how to successfully transition from one activity to another? Video modeling employs the use of videos to teach new skills. Students watch videos of someone successfully completing a task to increase their understanding of each step of the task. When the individual in the video is the student himself, this is referred to as video self-modeling. In this study, the researcher investigated the effects of video self-modeling on a student with autism and his ability to successfully transition from one activity to another. The student who participated in this study struggled with transitions. It was hypothesized that he would benefit from a new tool to help him successfully transition throughout the day. In addition to benefitting the student participant, this research also had the potential to provide educators with valuable information about a tool that could be used to introduce new activities to students and prepare them for transitions. Students are expected to move from place to place throughout the building on a very regular basis. For students with autism, video modeling may make those transitions more concrete and easier for them to navigate. It has the potential to decrease problem behaviors and increase independence. The use of video self modeling introduces the added element of increased engagement as a result of watching oneself complete the desired task. By using video self modeling, it was hypothesized that the student in this study would be more motivated by watching himself successfully complete a transition on the video.

Book Self advocacy at the University Level

Download or read book Self advocacy at the University Level written by Mark Antonio Tapia and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, students with ASD are attending tertiary education levels. Data indicates the numbers are increasing, but it is difficult to certify the percentage of students diagnosed with ASD attending postsecondary education. Rates vary across studies about how many students with ASD attend postsecondary education because many do not graduate compared to individuals without disabilities. This information signifies an important area of study in that research needs to address how we can best support adults with ASD attending postsecondary education programs to ensure their graduation rates are in line with those who do not have disabilities. Research provides some evidence to support self-advocacy skills, but little has occurred to explore how best to teach these skills at the postsecondary level. To that end, there is a positive model that emphasizes the unique needs of persons with autism, and it is the video model. Video modeling has a solid evidence base; however, studies involving video modeling for undergraduate students to advocate on college campuses are non-existent. The current study sought to explore how the use of video modeling, paired with a task analysis and role-play, impacted the ability of undergraduate students with ASD to use self-determination and self-advocacy skills in a university setting successfully. The video modeling intervention covered four essential areas of self-advocacy identified by the literature, including a) requesting accommodations from disability services, b) talking to a professor to disclose accommodations, c) locating services/supports throughout campus, and d) handling situations when a professor is not accommodating. Participants were required in the baseline phase to check in on their progress by completing a questionnaire about self-advocacy skills related to an intervention package consisting of a video model, a task analysis, and role-playing about specific components related to self-advocacy. Although there is a paucity using precise psychometric scales towards self-advocacy, the Self-Management Self-Test (SMST) was used as a template to create the questionnaire utilizing the four components of self-advocacy skills. The methodology used was a complex reversal (ABACADAE) design. For each phase, the participants watched a video model about four elements of self-advocacy and role-played the skill until mastery. A second questionnaire was completed afterward as a means of self-monitoring alongside questions that are not directly targeting self-advocacy components as a means of experimental control. The process occurred until the interventionists assessed all four components

Book Seeing is Believing

Download or read book Seeing is Believing written by Tom Buggey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video self-modeling (VSM) is a proven and effective method for teaching new or more advanced skills and behaviors to people with autism. The technique uses homemade videos (created by parents, teachers, or therapists) to demonstrate a desired behavior. The key feature of any self-modeling video is that the person modeling the behavior in the video is the same person watching the video. VSM allows a person with autism to see himself performing the very skill he is trying to learn. This is accomplished through careful editing and manipulation of video footage, transforming it into a cohesive teaching tool. And the process is a lot easier than you may think! Seeing Is Believing begins with an overview of the research and science behind VSM and insights into why it is a particularly good teaching method for people with autism and other developmental disabilities. It then explains the process of making self-modeling videos from start to finish, including how to: choose the behavior/skill to teach conduct a task analysis select and use camcorders and video software storyboard video scenes plan and shoot footage transfer the video to a VCR, DVD, or computer edit and manipulate the footage keep track of and interpret data These videos can teach or modify a wide variety of behaviors and skills, such as controlling tantrums, increasing the frequency and length of verbal responses, making requests, interacting with peers, and solving math problems. Seeing Is Believing is a good companion book to Functional Behavior Assessment for People with Autism and Stop That Seemingly Senseless Behavior! For further information on VSM, go to siskinvsm.org. Here youwill find a blog that provides additional advice and consultation via email on VSM methods, sample videos, FAQs, and a discussion forum with professionals in the field. siskinvsm.org will become operational in March 2009.

Book A Video Self Modeling Intervention to Modify Aggressive Behaviors in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities

Download or read book A Video Self Modeling Intervention to Modify Aggressive Behaviors in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities written by Kate M. Sadler and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the efficacy of a video self-modeling and functional behavior assessment intervention on a traditionally under-represented population. Students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disabilities (ID) are prone to higher rates of aggressive behavior that can be resistant to treatment. Under the frameworks of Behaviorism and Social Cognitive Theory an intervention was developed to decrease aggressive behaviors and increase self-regulated behavior. A multiple baseline design across stimulus conditions with inter-subject replication was conducted to explore the effects of the intervention. Data was collected on both the rate of aggressive behaviors and the use of a replacement behavior which fostered socially appropriate self-regulation. The data indicate that both participants demonstrated a decrease in aggressive behavior immediately following intervention across all stimulus conditions. Data collected on the replacement behavior indicated a change from baseline to intervention but results differed across participants.

Book Using Video Self Modeling to Increase Social Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Using Video Self Modeling to Increase Social Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Bryndis K. Andrade and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for effective interventions to improve the social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that are feasible to implement in the general education classroom has been well documented. Video self-modeling (VSM) interventions have produced rapid, durable positive behavioral changes that have been generalized beyond the intervention setting for individuals with a wide variety of conditions including ASD. In this study VSM was used as an intervention for increasing the use of spontaneous verbal communication during cooperative math activities with peers by three Hispanic boys ages 5 and 6 who had high functioning (HF) ASD. No defensible intervention effects were demonstrated in this experiment. It was likely that the target social communication skills were beyond the participants' current skill sets at least for the context in which those skills were used, a cooperative math activity. Possible implications, limitations, and future research were discussed.

Book Increasing Independence in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Using Video Self Modeling

Download or read book Increasing Independence in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Using Video Self Modeling written by Julie Iberer Bucalos and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independent task completion was examined using a multiple probe across participants research design for three students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) functioning in an inclusive classroom. Results were positive and suggest that video self-modeling (VSM) is a viable solution to decrease prompt dependence and increase independence and task completion for students with an ASD. Participants quickly reached criterion, generalized behavior, and maintained skills after four weeks at 80-100% independence. Social validity of VSM was also measured by surveying teachers and students and found clear variations between general and special education teachers regarding their perceptions of the independence of students as a result of the VSM. This study also revealed the discrepancy between the levels of prompting between general education and special education teachers.
