Download or read book A Victor of Circumstance written by Frank D'Souza and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century, Pittoo Fernandes and his immediate family, along with about 70,000 other Catholic Christians are taken prisoner from their native Mangalore and surrounding areas by the armies of Tippu Sultan of Mysore, and transported to the capital Srirangapatna, with almost a third of these prisoners dying en route due to illness, hunger, gross ill-treatment and torture. It was the Ruler’s intention that the whole community be exterminated, for what he considered high treason committed by members of the community, and the whole community was to be punished for it. Pittoo, an ex-seminarian, escapes from captivity after about six years’ incarceration, and though meek and very timid by nature, having had led a sheltered life till then, has to face the unforgiving and demanding realities of the savage and real world. Pittoo, being the last of his immediate family in captivity and after his escape, with the threat hanging over him of his feet and one hand being amputated if caught and brought back, has to use every bit of ingenuity, innovating and improvising to stay free and not be taken back into bondage. Dogged determination and his basic, survival instincts, coupled with absolutely raw courage, which he did not even know that he possessed, is all what he can fall back on, to take him further away from certain torture and death, and onward to freedom.

Book excerpt: Calvin Riley was born in poverty to parents who were allegedly blood brother and sister, on the island of Jamaica, where the privileged had a constant smile on their faces, but the underprivileged shed endless tears. From childhood, he experienced limitless emotional and physical pain, and at length he began to retaliate. As he got older, he realised that he was moulding into a new person of a new world, but he seemed forever condemned and hemmed in by walls. Eventually he had to lie and cheat to survive, and perhaps only the fact that he had love in his heart why he hadnt committed murder; it was also the same love that kept him from being killed.

Download or read book Dramas Fields and Metaphors written by Victor Turner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Victor Turner is concerned with various kinds of social actions and how they relate to, and come to acquire meaning through, metaphors and paradigms in their actors' minds; how in certain circumstances new forms, new metaphors, new paradigms are generated. To describe and clarify these processes, he ranges widely in history and geography: from ancient society through the medieval period to modern revolutions, and over India, Africa, Europe, China, and Meso-America. Two chapters, which illustrate religious paradigms and political action, explore in detail the confrontation between Henry II and Thomas Becket and between Hidalgo, the Mexican liberator, and his former friends. Other essays deal with long-term religious processes, such as the Christian pilgrimage in Europe and the emergence of anti-caste movements in India. Finally, he directs his attention to other social phenomena such as transitional and marginal groups, hippies, and dissident religious sects, showing that in the very process of dying they give rise to new forms of social structure or revitalized versions of the old order.

Download or read book The Value of Victory in Pindar s Odes written by Hanna Boeke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the cosmological context of Pindar’s victory odes, and how it influences his presentation of praise. The study first focuses on gnomai as a reflection of cosmology, using these sayings to establish the views the poems reveal on matters such as the divine, the human condition and man in society. This overview is complemented by detailed literary analyses demonstrating how cosmology functions in individual odes. They show that Pindar shapes the poet persona to emphasize different aspects of the traditional world view or represent varying viewpoints so that he can praise each victor according to his particular circumstances. By focusing on cosmology the book highlights a neglected dimension of Pindar’s odes and challenges some traditional views on this poet.

Download or read book The Harmonious Organ of Sedulius Scottus written by Michael C. Sloan and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces and translates Sedulius Scottus' Prologue (to the entire Collectaneum in Apostolum) and commentaries on Galatians and Ephesians. The introduction outlines the historical context of composition, identifies Sedulius' literary model - Servius, discusses Sedulius' organizing trope for the Prologue - the septem circumstantiae, asserts for what purpose and for whom he composed the Collectaneum, explains pertinent philological and stylistic issues, such as formatting, existing (or lack thereof) traits of Hiberno Latin, and Sedulius' knowledge of Greek, and it explores his use of exegetical and theological sources - predominantly Jerome, Augustine, and Pelagius. Since the commentaries are based upon these formative religious authors (among many others), the introduction also surveys Sedulius' doctrinal stances on important theological and ecclesiastical issues of his own time with particular relation to his reception of these authors. Sedulius' Collectaneum in Apostolum reveals an erudite author familiar with the style of classical commentaries, which he uses to harmonize the sometimes discordant voices of patristic authors for the purposes of education in accordance with Carolingian programmatic aims.
