Book excerpt: During the First World War five French soldiers, accused of a cowardly attempt to evade duty, are bundled into no-man's land and certain death. Five bodies are later recovered, the families are notified that the men died in the line of duty and the whole, distasteful incident appears closed. After the war the fianc-e of one of the men receives a letter which hints at what might have happened. Mathilde Donnay determines to discover the fate of her beloved amid the carnage of battle. A Very Long Engagement turns into an unusual and engrossing thriller as she discovers an increasing number of people trying to put her off the scent. Japrisot's achievement is to have written a novel that is both a suspenseful thriller and one which transforms a single small incident into the epitome of all wartime atrocities. The d-nouement, when it finally happens, is moving and horribly convincing.

As they travel by ship to New York for her childhood friend Tabitha’s wedding, Amory Ames gazes out at the city’s iconic skyline, excited by the prospect of being a bridesmaid. Her husband Milo, however, is convinced their trip will be deadly dull, since Prohibition is in full swing. But when a member of the wedding party is found murdered on the front steps of the bride’s home, the happy plans take a darker twist. Amory discovers that the dead groomsman has links to the notorious—and notoriously handsome—gangster Leon De Lora, and soon she and Milo find themselves drawn into another mystery. While the police seem to think that New York’s criminal underworld is at play, Amory feels they can’t ignore the wedding party either. Tabitha’s fiancé Tom Smith appears to be a good man, but he has secrets of his own, and the others in the group seem strangely unaffected by the death of their friend . . . In an unfamiliar city, not knowing who they can trust, Milo and Amory are drawn into the glamorous, dangerous world of nightclubs and bootleggers. But as they draw closer to unraveling the web of lies and half-truths the murdered man has left in his wake, the killer is weaving a web of his own.

Book The European Union s Engagement with Transnational Policy Networks

Download or read book The European Union s Engagement with Transnational Policy Networks written by Stephen Kingah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to paint a comprehensive picture of the manner in which the European Union (the EU) interacts with transnational policy networks (TPNs). The TPNs covered are those in a variety of fields including: conflict-prone natural resources, health, energy security, migration, human trafficking, combating of terrorism financing and climate change. The chapters are developed around six main lines of inquiry. The lines of inquiry articulated are: modalities through which the EU influences TPNs around the world, TPNs’ influence of policy and decision-making within the EU, conditions under which engagement between the TPNs and the EU may be regarded as successful, the identity and location of the TPNs and finally the added value or futility of a strategy developed in Brussels to weaken or fortify interactions with the networks studied. The importance of TPNs should be approached from the angle of the heightened attention now placed on informal modes of decision making. Increasingly there is a sense that many international decisions are adopted and internalized through networks that can be efficient yet wanting in transparency. The book unveils complex debates on the inter-phase between inter-governmental / supranational entities like the EU, on the one hand, and networks, on the other. The physiognomy of this inter-phase matters not only for the EU but also for other such inter-governmental/ supranational bodies as well as networks. This book was previously published as a special issue of Contemporary Politics.

Liese Campbell has an engagement for the weekend: to stay with Alexander Colquhoun, the handsome, well-mannered heir of an Australian pastoral dynasty, at his country seat some hours from Melbourne.
