This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism has no place in the world, and everyone knows it’s not okay. Why, then, is racism still a part of peoples’ experiences? Why are protests and demonstrations happening? Why is there even a conversation about “Black lives matter”? Racism is not a partisan issue, and this is not a political book—it’s a history book. The fact is that racism has been built into the very foundations this country was built on; from employment to housing and education to criminal justice. A (very brief) History of Systemic Racism looks at hundreds of years of institutional and structural racism, breaking it down into a concise series of events, laws, restrictions, policies, and practices that have led to where we are today. The journey toward anti-racism begins by arming yourself with information and understanding the history of oppression, inequity, and inequality of Black people in the U.S., and this book will give you a strong basal knowledge of systemic racism in this country. Book excerpt: In this book, Feagin develops a theory of systemic racism to interpret the highly racialized character and development of this society. Exploring the distinctive social worlds that have been created by racial oppression over nearly four centuries and what this has meant for the people of the United States, focusing his analysis on white-on-black oppression. Drawing on the commentaries of black and white Americans in three historical eras; the slavery era, the legal segregation era, and then those of white Americans. Feagin examines how major institutions have been thoroughly pervaded by racial stereotypes, ideas, images, emotions, and practices. He theorizes that this system of racial oppression was not an accident of history, but was created intentionally by white Americans. While significant changes have occurred in this racist system over the centuries, key and fundamentally elements have been reproduced over nearly four centuries, and US institutions today imbed the racialized hierarchy created in the 17th century. Today, as in the past, racial oppression is not just a surface-level feature of society, but rather it pervades, permeates, and interconnects all major social groups, networks, and institutions across society.

Book A Brief History of the Subordination of African Americans in the U S

Download or read book A Brief History of the Subordination of African Americans in the U S written by Alexander Polikoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This "brief history" presents the essential story of the subordination of African Americans in the U.S., captured in a 1968 cartoon by Pulitzer-prize-winning cartoonist John Fischetti. The drawing is of a black man handcuffed to a wall with cuffs labeled "White Racism." The caption reads, "Why don't they lift themselves up by their own bootstraps like we did?" Bootstraps shows just how little lift-up there has been, and how the handcuffs of white racism have been and continue to be the cause. Unique in its combination of comprehensiveness and brevity, Bootstraps is written in language for the general reader; yet its extensive endnotes will make it useful to both scholars and students. Its succinct overview of the subordination history includes an in-depth treatment of residential segregation - a legacy of slavery and a central problem of our time - and a response to the view that today's racial inequality is due largely to African Americans' own moral and cultural failures. By addressing a serious omission in the way we have educated our children, the book's narration of our white racism history may make a contribution to a much-needed confrontation with our racist past"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism manifests itself in a variety of ways and can occur in a variety of settings. It includes prejudice, discrimination, or hatred directed at someone because of their skin color, ethnicity, or national origin. Racism is often associated with acts of abuse or harassment. It does not, however, have to be violent or intimidating. Consider racial epithets and jokes. Consider situations in which people are excluded from groups or activities because of their origins. Racism can be seen in people's actions as well as their attitudes. It can also be seen in systems and institutions. However, it is not always revealed. Not all racism is obvious. For example, someone may go through a list of job applicants and decide not to interview people with certain surnames. Racism is more than just words, beliefs, and actions. It encompasses all of the barriers that prevent people from enjoying dignity and equality because of their race. For decades, serious scholarship has focused on racism in America. Harvard University Press have had the privilege of publishing some of the most influential books on the subject. The excerpts in this volume, drawn from works of history, law, sociology, medicine, economics, critical theory, philosophy, art, and literature, are an invitation to understand anti-Black racism through the eyes of our most astute commentators. Systematic Inequality is for all curious readers, teachers, and students who wish to discover How Structural Racism Helped Create the Black-White Wealth Gap in America. Book America s Original Sin

Download or read book America s Original Sin written by K Gerald Torrence and published by . This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Original Sin: A Collection of Essays on Racism and the Continuing Scourge of White Supremacy by K. Gerald Torrence is a compelling exploration of the pervasive and enduring impact of racism in America. This book did not begin as an intentional project; rather, it emerged from the author's heartfelt reflections on current events affecting African Americans over the past two years. These personal and spontaneous musings gradually evolved into a profound collection of essays, each one revealing the deep-seated connections between historical and contemporary issues of racism and white supremacy. Torrence, a child of the 1960s, grew up on the campuses of Tuskegee Institute and Tennessee State University, where his father served as provost and president. Despite his privileged upbringing, it wasn't until later in life that he fully grasped the realities of America's dual identity-one Black, one white. Through extensive study of African, European, and American history, Torrence began to see the threads of racism and white supremacy that have been woven into the fabric of American society from its inception. In *America's Original Sin*, Torrence delves into the lives and writings of prominent figures like Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, and Malcolm X, among others, to shed light on the historical roots of racial injustice and the ongoing struggle for equality. This collection of essays provides a raw and unflinching look at the systemic racism that continues to shape the lives of African Americans today, offering readers a historical lens through which to understand the complexities of the American experience. This book is not just a reflection on the past, but a call to recognize the persistence of America's original sin-racism and white supremacy-and the urgent need for change. *America's Original Sin* is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the ongoing fight for racial justice in the United States.

Book Inequality and American Democracy

Download or read book Inequality and American Democracy written by Lawrence R. Jacobs and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, the United States ended some of its most flagrant inequalities. The "rights revolution" ended statutory prohibitions against women's suffrage and opened the doors of voting booths to African Americans. Yet a more insidious form of inequality has emerged since the 1970s—economic inequality—which appears to have stalled and, in some arenas, reversed progress toward realizing American ideals of democracy. In Inequality and American Democracy, editors Lawrence Jacobs and Theda Skocpol headline a distinguished group of political scientists in assessing whether rising economic inequality now threatens hard-won victories in the long struggle to achieve political equality in the United States. Inequality and American Democracy addresses disparities at all levels of the political and policy-making process. Kay Lehman Scholzman, Benjamin Page, Sidney Verba, and Morris Fiorina demonstrate that political participation is highly unequal and strongly related to social class. They show that while economic inequality and the decreasing reliance on volunteers in political campaigns serve to diminish their voice, middle class and working Americans lag behind the rich even in protest activity, long considered the political weapon of the disadvantaged. Larry Bartels, Hugh Heclo, Rodney Hero, and Lawrence Jacobs marshal evidence that the U.S. political system may be disproportionately responsive to the opinions of wealthy constituents and business. They argue that the rapid growth of interest groups and the increasingly strict party-line voting in Congress imperils efforts at enacting policies that are responsive to the preferences of broad publics and to their interests in legislation that extends economic and social opportunity. Jacob Hacker, Suzanne Mettler, and Dianne Pinderhughes demonstrate the feedbacks of government policy on political participation and inequality. In short supply today are inclusive public policies like the G.I. Bill, Social Security legislation, the War on Poverty, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that changed the American political climate, mobilized interest groups, and altered the prospect for initiatives to stem inequality in the last fifty years. Inequality and American Democracy tackles the complex relationships between economic, social, and political inequality with authoritative insight, showcases a new generation of critical studies of American democracy, and highlights an issue of growing concern for the future of our democratic society.

Book Income Polarization in the United States

Download or read book Income Polarization in the United States written by Ali Alichi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper uses a combination of micro-level datasets to document the rise of income polarization—what some have referred to as the “hollowing out” of the income distribution—in the United States, since the 1970s. While in the initial decades more middle-income households moved up, rather than down, the income ladder, since the turn of the current century, most of polarization has been towards lower incomes. This result is striking and in contrast with findings of other recent contributions. In addition, the paper finds evidence that, after conditioning on income and household characteristics, the marginal propensity to consume from permanent changes in income has somewhat fallen in recent years. We assess the potential impacts of these trends on private consumption. During 1998-2013, the rise in income polarization and lower marginal propensity to consume have suppressed the level of real consumption at the aggregate level, by about 31⁄2 percent—equivalent to more than one year of consumption.

Book excerpt: As the possibilities of the 21st century appear on the horizon, it seems an appropriate time to look back on and critically analyze the past century which also began with reflection and expectations. Although many people in the United States are sure that "as far as race relations go, things have gotten better," a closer look at examples of material and popular culture from either end of the 20th century illustrates that "things have stayed very much the same." Even though the original "scientific" ideas that constructed our understanding of race are now presented in more subtle forms, their legacy continues to perpetuate the divisions that preserve inequality in our society. Some people speak about the shift from earlier blatant to overt forms of racism which might seem to imply that things have gotten better. Instead, It exists a subtle, covert, and possibly more insidious brand of racism [that surfaced and created] what has been referred to as America's 'second reconstruction.' The 'new racism' began to emerge in the late 1970s and solidified in the Reagan era. It has taken the form of social and public policies, sanctioned by the courts and America's political elites. The resulting budget cuts in public education, housing, medical care, and other services that assist the poor ensure that black and Hispanic people remain the poorest Americans. Historically, African Americans consistently remained at the bottom of the social hierarchy, as some immigrants managed to rise to higher levels. Now, new immigration laws prevent "third world" minorities, and particularly "Hispanic" people from becoming a part of the "American Dream." This more subtle and "new racism" is in reaction to and follows the "racial progress" of the heightened civil rights and black power movements during the 1960s and1970s when black Americans organized nationally and took to the streets to protest racism and oppression. African American's demands for political and social change pushed politicians to begin dismantling the obvious signs of racism. Laws that legislated segregation based on race in education, housing, employment, and suffrage were slowly repealed. The blatant images that also worked to maintain the status quo--images that were designed to ridicule and construct stereotypes of African Americans also seemed to slowly disappear. However, a closer look at contemporary material culture shows that the old images live through their descendants and are still very much with us. Like their earlier counterparts, printed advertisements, television commercials, children's books, popular movies, "scientific" films and exhibitions, and pictorial natural history magazines produced for Americans during the past one hundred years have continued to provide tangible evidence of white supremacist assumptions. These tangible materials are "consumed" at all age levels, and they are connected to broad-based intellectual constructs. At the beginning of this century, the discipline of anthropology, the "science" of eugenics, and the ideas of social Darwinism continued to build on earlier assumptions and capture the imagination of many people. The relationship between these abstract arguments and concrete culture has maintained a perpetual and vicious cycle, even with a few sporadic doses of antidote. It is important to point out that the negative effect of the white supremacy myth impacts African Americans and Africans in very real ways, and that without social action the mere discussion of racism is ineffective. This book aims to provide history and context to convince readers to take action and become more vigilant in critiquing the barrage of images and words that influence us every day. The first section provides a broad history of the complex development of ideas and belief systems that form the foundation of racist ideology. In the following two sections, I discuss the background of some stereotypes of Africans and African Americ

Book Still the Big News

Download or read book Still the Big News written by Bob Blauner and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, Bob Blauner's incisive writing on race relations has drawn a wide and varied audience. Whether his topic is the Watts riots in 1965, Chicano culture, or the tension between Blacks and Jews, his work is remarkable for its originality and candor. Beginning with the key essays of his landmark book, Racial Oppression in America, this volume makes the case that race and racism still permeate every aspect of American experience.Blauner launched his concept of internal colonialism in the turbulent 1960s, a period in which many Americans worried that racial conflicts would propel the country into another civil war. The notion that the systematic oppression of people of color in the United States resembles the situation of colonized populations in Third World countries still informs much of the academic research on race as well as public discourse. Indeed, today's critical race and whiteness studies are deeply indebted to Blauner's work on internal colonialism and the pervasiveness of white privilege. Offering a radical perspective on the United States' racial landscape, Bob Blauner forcefully argues that we ignore the persistence of oppression and our continuing failure to achieve equality at our own peril. Author note: Bob Blauner is Professor Emeritus, Department of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley, and a freelance writer.

Book excerpt: The exploitation, control and violence against Black people in the Americas is not a new phenomenon. We have seen the world of Black people worsen each day, month, year, decade, and century. The events of May 25, 2020 were another breaking point in the long history of Black oppression by systems and structures controlled predominantly by white people. George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, was murdered in cold blood by Derek Chauvin - a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.There will never be an acceptable explanation for what happened between Michael Brown and Darren Wilson in Ferguson but we will never fully grasp why the stage was set for such an encounter unless we know American history. We cannot fully comprehend why Dylan Roof murdered nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston unless we study the Civil War and the Confederacy. We cannot truly fathom how a minor traffic stop in Cincinnati could result in a white campus police officer blowing out the brains of an unarmed black man unless we delve into the role race has played in law enforcement from the enactment of the federal Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 to today's mandatory minimum sentencing statutes. In this book, Andrew Smith unveils the root to systemic racism and the path we can take to put an end to it.TAP the BUY NOW icon to get this book now!!
