Book excerpt: Sky I’ve been hit with a Cupid’s arrow, and I can’t seem to break free of its hold. No, not a Cupid. More like a Demon’s curse. He has me trapped, drowning in the deep brown of his irises. I’m confined and bound by the devilish smirk that lines his sinful mouth. No matter how hard my mind tries to convince me to leave, My heart begs to stay exactly where I am, A prisoner to Hail O’Brien. Hail I wish I never laid eyes on her, the girl whose face brings me nightmares of another. She’s a sinful package wrapped in an angel’s bow and I’m the Demon ripping it open. I tried to turn my back, to let her go but I’m too weak. I’ll use the excuse of protecting her to stick around but one day soon, She’ll be nothing but a distant memory, a name on a tombstone, Sky Martin.

Book The Text of Marcion s Gospel

Download or read book The Text of Marcion s Gospel written by Dieter T. Roth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Text of Marcion’s Gospel Dieter T. Roth offers a new, critical reconstruction of Marcion’s Gospel including various levels of certainty for readings in this Gospel text. An extensive history of research, overview of both attested and unattested verses in the various sources, and methodological considerations related, in particular, to understanding the citation customs of the sources set the stage for a comprehensive analysis of all relevant data concerning Marcion’s Gospel. On the basis of this new reconstruction significant issues in the study of early Christianity, including the relationship between Marcion’s Gospel and Luke and the place of Marcion in the history of the canon and the formation of the fourfold Gospel, can be considered anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of letters purportedly written by Penelope, Dido, Medea, and other heroines to their lovers, the Heroides represents Ovid's initial attempt to revitalize myth as a subject for literature. In this book, Howard Jacobson examines the first fifteen elegaic letters of the Heroides. In his critical evaluation, Professor Jacobson takes into consideration the twofold nature of the work: its existence as a single entity with uniform poetic structure and coherent goals, and its existence as a collection of fifteen individual poems. Thus, fifteen chapters are devoted to a thorough analysis and interpretation of the particular poems, while six additional chapters are concerned with problems that pertain to the work as a whole, such as the nature of the genre, the role of rhetoric, theme, and variation, and the originality of Ovid. Special attention is given to the application of modern psychological criticism to the delineations of the pathological psyche in the letters. In an additional chapter on the chronology of Ovid's early amatory poetry, the author challenges and revises the traditional dating of the Heroides. Originally published in 1974. Book Classicism and Christianity in Late Antique Latin Poetry

Download or read book Classicism and Christianity in Late Antique Latin Poetry written by Philip Hardie and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After centuries of near silence, Latin poetry underwent a renaissance in the late fourth and fifth centuries CE evidenced in the works of key figures such as Ausonius, Claudian, Prudentius, and Paulinus of Nola. This period of resurgence marked a milestone in the reception of the classics of late Republican and early imperial poetry. In Classicism and Christianity in Late Antique Latin Poetry, Philip Hardie explores the ways in which poets writing on non-Christian and Christian subjects used the classical traditions of Latin poetry to construct their relationship with Rome’s imperial past and present, and with the by now not-so-new belief system of the state religion, Christianity. The book pays particular attention to the themes of concord and discord, the "cosmic sense" of late antiquity, novelty and renouatio, paradox and miracle, and allegory. It is also a contribution to the ongoing discussion of whether there is an identifiably late antique poetics and a late antique practice of intertextuality. Not since Michael Robert's classic The Jeweled Style has a single book had so much to teach about the enduring power of Latin poetry in late antiquity.
