Book A Variational Calculation of the Elastic

Download or read book A Variational Calculation of the Elastic written by Howard Boyet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Variational Calculation of the Elastic: Scattering of Electrons, by Hydrogen Atoms One of the important problems of upper atmospheric and astrophysical research is the determination of the frequencies of collisions between electrons and atomic systems. Informa tion on this subject can be obtained from a knowledge of the total cross-section, Q, and to some extent from the differential cross-section, (hg), of the collision. The temperatures at which these collisions occur are of such a magnitude that the electron energies are of the order of a fraction of an electron volt, and at these low energies the problems associated with experimental determinations of the cross-sections become complex. Consequently there is a deficiency of experimental data. It is therefore essential to have theoretical methods for calculating the cross-sections. Book Variational Calculation of Electron Elastic Scattering by Atomic Helium

Download or read book Variational Calculation of Electron Elastic Scattering by Atomic Helium written by Paul Joseph Chernek and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic-scattering of electrons from atomic helium in the ground state is investigated. It is shown that for low energy incident electrons the scattering problem reduced to solving an ordinary integro-differential equation for the scattering wave-function. A method is discussed to obtain approximate solutions to the integro-differential equation by variational principles. The extremum condition of the variational method is formulated into a general N x N matrix equation which reduces to a 2 x 2 eigen-value matrix problem for the phase-shift of the scattering electron. An algorithm is presented to obtain the collisional cross-section for elastic scattering as a function of incident electron energy. (Author).

Book Application of a Variational Method to Some Dissipative Nonconservative Problems of Elastic Stability

Download or read book Application of a Variational Method to Some Dissipative Nonconservative Problems of Elastic Stability written by Gary L. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with the development of an adjoint variational principle that forms the basis of a method that is used to obtain approximate solutions for nonconservative problems of elastic stability in which dissipative forces are present. For a general fifth order partial differential equation in time and one space variable, the associated adjoint boundary value problem is derived. A variational principle embodying both the original and the adjoint problems is developed. Three specific nonconservative stability problems are studied by this method and the numerical convergence of the approximate solutions is studied by enlarging suitably the number of modes retained in the assumed expansions of the deflection functions. It is found that internal damping may be either of a stabilizing or destabilizing nature, depending upon its magnitude as well as the magnitude of the external damping parameter. (Author).

Book Direct and Finite Variational Methods for the Elastic Wave Equation microform

Download or read book Direct and Finite Variational Methods for the Elastic Wave Equation microform written by Yves Claude Athias and published by National Library of Canada. This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to have a closer look at classical numerical analysis as a tool for solving the elastic wave equation in its general case. After topological considerations of the parameter distributions at the boundary, and their relationship to the grid and the operator domains, we develop numerical schemes by the direct method of the numerical analysis (i.e. the differential equation and the external conditions). We also examine the variational or energy method where the boundary conditions are naturally introduced by Gauss' Theorem in the potential energy equation. For this purpose we will develop also a method of discretisation of the Dirichlet integral, and its bilinear form. Comparisons between those schemes show the uniqueness of the development. A finite difference example illustrates the P - SV conversions.

Book Mathematical Theory of Elastic Structures

Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Elastic Structures written by Kang Feng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elasticity theory is a classical discipline. The mathematical theory of elasticity in mechanics, especially the linearized theory, is quite mature, and is one of the foundations of several engineering sciences. In the last twenty years, there has been significant progress in several areas closely related to this classical field, this applies in particular to the following two areas. First, progress has been made in numerical methods, especially the development of the finite element method. The finite element method, which was independently created and developed in different ways by sci entists both in China and in the West, is a kind of systematic and modern numerical method for solving partial differential equations, especially el liptic equations. Experience has shown that the finite element method is efficient enough to solve problems in an extremely wide range of applica tions of elastic mechanics. In particular, the finite element method is very suitable for highly complicated problems. One of the authors (Feng) of this book had the good fortune to participate in the work of creating and establishing the theoretical basis of the finite element method. He thought in the early sixties that the method could be used to solve computational problems of solid mechanics by computers. Later practice justified and still continues to justify this point of view. The authors believe that it is now time to include the finite element method as an important part of the content of a textbook of modern elastic mechanics.

Book On a Pointwise Variational Principle of Elasticity and Mathematical Physics

Download or read book On a Pointwise Variational Principle of Elasticity and Mathematical Physics written by M. P. Stallybrass and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is discussed for constructing stationary functionals for the value of the solution of a linear boundary value problem, or of the derivatives of such a solution, at a specified, but arbitrary, point. The procedure is applicable to any boundary value problem governed by a linearly elliptic partial differential equation, or a system of such equations, for which global fundamental solutions exist. The technique is particularly suited to obtain approximate results in a class of mixed boundary value problems, involving a rigid body oscillating about various axes on the surface of an elastic half-space. The procedure is illustrated by constructing stationary expressions for the solution of a mixed boundary value problem associated with the Helmholtz equation and the class of elasto-dynamic problems referred to above. Method is applied to compute the displacement on the free surface of an elastic half-space due to the torsional oscillation of a finite disk situated on the surface. (Author).
