Book Neglected Plant Foods Of South Asia

Download or read book Neglected Plant Foods Of South Asia written by Tariq Ismail and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the global hunger index, South Asia has worldwide highest rate of undernourished people. Such a burden of food insecurity and various forms of malnutrition are directly associated with the existing food production system that ignores biodiversity, food affordability, and sustainability. During the last five decades, food production system has witnessed a global shift from ethnic to mainstream staple cereals production and promotion. Such an approach has badly affected the regional genetic pool of a diverse range of nourishing, economical, and sustainable edible plant species which are now referred to as neglected or underutilized food crops. Neglected Plant Foods of South Asia collects and preserves existing knowledge of underutilized, minor, wild, neglected and traditional food plants of South Asia, and their utilization for the production of value-added food products. Aiming at introducing plant – based food solutions to address the increasing burden of food insecurity among marginalized communities of South Asia, this manuscript covers a plethora of nutrient-dense plant species including fruits, vegetables, roots, tubers, cereals, pseudo-cereals, and pulses. In addition to having an overview of each plant's origin, cultivation practices and production statistics, researchers will find comprehensive information on nutritional composition, food manufacturing properties, value-addition and traditional uses of neglected plant foods. Recent updates on strategies to combat toxicological risks associated with the consumption of neglected food plants have also been included. With this volume, researchers will have complete information on neglected, underutilized traditional edible plants of South Asia, and their potential to increase food security under the emerging challenges of climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper No. 359. As the telecommunications sector evolves toward a more competitive environment in which the private actors become the main players, it is essential to develop policies that will reduce the disparities between urban and rural telecommunications services. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the technical and financial parameters that have to be considered in formulating such policies. It presents an array of options for commercial operation of rural telecommunications and challenges the general perception that rural telecommunications services are unprofitable. It demonstrates that services can be economically delivered to rural areas at affordable prices while simultaneously providing reasonable financial returns to investors. A planning tool kit is included that assists in the design of the various options.

Book An investigation of the relationship between value chain activities and generic strategies in small and medium sized enterprises in UK Manufacturing

Download or read book An investigation of the relationship between value chain activities and generic strategies in small and medium sized enterprises in UK Manufacturing written by Antonios Michail and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-12-19 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Central Lancashire, language: English, abstract: In this study an in depth investigation of successful competitive strategies for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is undertaken. The overall aim of this study is to analyse the strategic orientation of UK Manufacturing SMEs. In the process, it will test Porter’s (1980, 1985) theoretical framework of generic strategies and thus evaluate firms’ preferred strategic synthesis. It will, therefore, test the efficacy of the value chain and develop any specific pattern that relates to a combination strategy. The investigation of the above objectives is undertaken utilising a mixed research methodology with the purpose of examining the applicability of existing competitive strategy frameworks (phase 1) and testing a new theoretical framework that incorporates additional dimensions of strategy (phase 2). During phase 1, Porter’s framework is employed to investigate SMEs’ strategic orientation as a means to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. A semi-structured questionnaire is employed and the analysis is carried out by means of factor and cluster analysis to identify strategic variables currently employed by SMEs. During phase 2, the theoretical framework is operationalised to bridge the gap within the literature and existing empirical research. Its purpose is to identify forms of successful competitive strategies of UK MSMEs as they are formulated and implemented in firms’ value chain activities. The data was collected through a number of semi-structured interviews and the analysis was based on data categorisation. The findings indicate that Porter’s (1980) single generic strategies are not the best option for UK MSMEs for gaining competitive advantage and that the competitive strategy of successful MSMEs differs from that of the less successful ones. Successful UK MSMEs develop competitive strategies that are characterised by a combination of strategies as they are formulated within firms’ value chain activities. Although, during the evaluation of strategic synthesis at value chain level, the data analysis demonstrated that not all forms of combination strategies can deliver a high performance. One of the significant findings to emerge from this study is that the value chain framework is essential when analysing forms of successful competitive strategies of UK MSMEs. The results of this investigation also show that generalisations and previous recommendations regarding successful MSMEs competitive strategy should be interpreted with caution.

Book Tracking empowerment along the value chain Testing a modified WEAI in the Feed the Future Zone of Influence in Bangladesh

Download or read book Tracking empowerment along the value chain Testing a modified WEAI in the Feed the Future Zone of Influence in Bangladesh written by Ahmed, Akhter U. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon request of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) conducted this study to support USAID in assessing the state of empowerment and gender parity of men and women along the agricultural value chain in the Feed the Future (FTF) Zone of Influence (ZOI) in Bangladesh. Specifically, IFPRI’s Policy Research and Strategy Support Program (PRSSP), funded by USAID, piloted the modified Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) survey instruments in 10 upazilas (sub-districts) within the FTF ZOI across 1,200 households, which broadly belong to three economic activities of interest: (1) agricultural production, (2) agricultural entrepreneurship, and (3) agricultural sector employment. The quantitative survey was complemented by qualitative research to glean further insights into the facilitators and constraints of empowerment among various actors in the agricultural value chain. The data and analysis generated from this WEAI for Value Chain (WEAI4VC) study may inform USAID’s selection and design of interventions that may, in turn, maximize its programmatic impact on women and men’s empowerment as producers, entrepreneurs, and wage employees.

Book Inter firm Relationships and Governance Structures

Download or read book Inter firm Relationships and Governance Structures written by Tebarek Lika Megento and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the topic of governance and interfirm relationships in the Ethiopian leather and leather products industry was developed after observing a gap in the literature on value chain research at the international level and finding only a few empirical studies on value chains at the local level. Most of the value chain research conducted throughout the world are either too general or are simply functionalistic and, thus, fail to address the socio-cultural context. This study contributes to the literature in several ways: firstly, the present research suggests that a central focus of value chain analysis should be the examination of social networks within local, but also global, value chains, as social relations might play an important and so far neglected role in the struggle to participate in the rapidly changing world economy. Secondly, as a clear departure from mainstream value chain research, this study makes use of a mixture of value chain and network approaches for exploring processes and micro-level interactions used by individuals to construct and maintain networks.

Book Promoting University industry Collaboration in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Promoting University industry Collaboration in Sri Lanka written by Kurt Larsen and published by Directions in Development. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Strong science, technology, and innovation links between universities and industry are of critical importance to Sri Lanka as it strives to become an upper-middle-income country. This report presents an overview of current U-I collaboration in Sri Lanka by analyzing responses to a survey of companies and university departments in 2015. Data from the 2015 survey are compared with data from a similar survey in 2007 to identify trends over time. The study examines current policies to promote U-I collaboration in Sri Lanka, highlights some good practices in other countries, and suggests possible ways that Sri Lanka may be able to strengthen U-I collaboration. The report is intended primarily for policy makers in the fields of higher education, research, and innovation, as well as for researchers in companies, universities, and research institutes who are already collaborating in public-private partnerships or are planning to do so. The responses show that the majority of existing links between Sri Lankan universities and companies are short-term, informal interactions with low direct transfer of knowledge and innovation. However, the survey findings also show a growing emphasis on deeper and more demanding types of collaboration, such as joint Research and Development activities, prototype testing, and spin-offs, even though these remain relatively uncommon. Key recommendations to strengthen U-I collaboration are: - As part of the national Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy 2016+"2020, develop and implement a national plan to upgrade the country's research infrastructure, in line with national research and innovation priorities. - Strengthen Research and Development funding schemes for joint projects between universities/research institutes and companies, based on national and international experiences. - Define and implement clear intellectual property rights rules for publicly funded research to encourage the use of research results and ensure effective and timely legal protection of intellectual property. - Establish open innovation spaces and business incubators at universities and make available seed money for faculty and students to develop start-ups. - Strengthen the U-I interaction cells at universities with professional expertise in technology transfer and business model development. - Establish opportunities for master's and PhD students to pursue targeted research projects in companies as part of their study."
