An orphan, Mike grew up as a ward of the state. Living with different families he has learned what hard work is and isn't afraid of it. What does scare him is losing some of his steers or heifers to the cattle rustlers who are working the area. One evening on his way to visit another rancher who has lost some steers, his horse is spooked by stepping on a dead body lying in the path and Mike is caught up in a murder mystery he must solve before he loses some of his own cattle. But while Mike and the Sheriff team up to find the killer some complications arise involving a little boy lost in the wilderness across the road from Mike's ranch and an old abandoned mine there Meantime, Mike marries and settles down to a happy and prosperous life. He buys more land and hires cowboys, but despite how rosy the future looks, suspicion keeps on growing inside Mike that something weird is going on in the old mine. When he investigates, he learns that old ghosts cast long shadows, a lesson that nearly costs him his life.

Book excerpt: The Lost Generation: The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Death of a Hero by Richard Aldington, Under Fire: The Story of a Squad by Henri Barbusse. After the First World War, special people returned to their home towns from the front. When the war began, they were still boys, but duty forced them to defend the homeland. "Lost Generation" - as they were called. This concept is used today when we talk about writers who worked during the breaks between the First and Second World Wars, which became a test for all of humanity and were almost all beaten out of their usual, peaceful rut. One of the themes that commonly appears in the authors' works is decadence and the frivolous lifestyle of the wealthy. Writers of the lost generation raise in their works the problem of young people who returned from the war and did not find their home, their relatives. Questions about how to live, how to remain human, how to learn to enjoy life again - this is what is paramount in this literary movement. Table of Contents: 1. Ernest Hemingway: A Farewell to Arms 2. Ernest Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises 3. Francis Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby 4. Richard Aldington: Death of a Hero 5. Henri Barbusse: Under Fire: The Story of a Squad

Book After London Or Wild England

Download or read book After London Or Wild England written by Richard Jefferies and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2024-07-27 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After London; Or, Wild England" by Richard Jefferies is a visionary work of speculative fiction that paints a haunting and evocative picture of a post-apocalyptic England. The novel imagines a future where civilization has collapsed, and nature has reclaimed the land. Cities lie in ruins, and the remnants of human society have reverted to a medieval state of existence. The story follows Felix Aquila, a young nobleman who embarks on a perilous journey through this transformed landscape. Driven by a desire to win the love of Aurora, a noblewoman, Felix must navigate the dangers of a wild and untamed England. His journey takes him through dense forests, overgrown marshlands, and the remains of once-great cities now swallowed by nature. Along the way, he encounters various factions and communities, each struggling to survive in this new world. Jefferies' "After London" is notable for its rich descriptions and contemplative tone. The novel explores themes of survival, the resilience of nature, and the fragility of human civilization. Through Felix's eyes, readers witness the beauty and brutality of a world where the balance of power has shifted from humanity to the natural world. This pioneering work of eco-fiction remains a powerful and thought-provoking read. "After London; Or, Wild England" offers a unique blend of adventure, romance, and ecological reflection, making it a timeless exploration of humanity's relationship with nature and the enduring consequences of societal collapse.
