Book excerpt: The CCAFS Gender and Climate Survey data were collected in 4 sites in Africa South of the Sahara in early 2013 as part of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) under the project on Increasing Women’s Resilience to Confront Climate Change.2 The survey grew out of collaboration, organized by CCAFS, between researchers participating in the program from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The project aimed to enhance understanding of gendered climate change perceptions, impacts, coping and adaptation strategies, and the constraints to adaptation within selected CCAFS baseline sites in Kenya, Senegal and Uganda. These issues are areas where CCAFS interventions may lead to gender transformative outcomes. Specifically, the survey was designed to answer the following questions: How do men and women perceive climate change and, particularly, the livelihood risks associated with climate change? What are the gender disparities in access to and control over assets and how and to what degree does the disparity in assets affect how men and women experience climate shocks and change? How and to what degree does asset disparity determine how men and women respond to climate shocks and change? Which coping strategies and adaptation options are favored by women and men, respectively, and why? The survey collected detailed gender-disaggregated data on these issues to inform strategies to increase climate change resilience among both women and men farmers. Multiple members of each household were surveyed to capture gendered views and experiences. The data, therefore, offer valuable insights into the ways in which men and women perceive and adopt innovations differently.

These advances have also substantially increased their capacity to connect with each other in a continuously expanding number of ways. Rural women are currently (and have always been) last in line in terms of ICT access and use, even though women stand more to gain than most from active participation and engagement with these resources. Evidence suggests that the ICT sector is both urban- and male-centric, ranging from the design of ICTs to the gender of sector employees and decision-makers. Representation in the media is also predominantly male. The aim of this paper is to bring rural communities, and women and other marginalized groups in particular, back into the centre of conversations on ICTs and ICT4D.

Feeding nine billion people by 2050 will require major efforts aimed at climate change adaptation and mitigation. One approach to agriculture has recently been captured by the widely adopted term of "Climate Smart Agriculture" (CSA). This book not only explains what this entails, but also presents practical on-the-ground studies of practices and innovations in agriculture across a broader spectrum, including agroecology and conservation agriculture, in less developed countries. It is shown that CSA is not a completely new science and a number of its recommended technologies have been used for some time by local farmers all over the world. What is relevant and new is ‘the approach’ to exploit their adaptation and mitigation potential. However, a major limitation is the lack of evidence-based knowledge that is necessary for policy makers to prepare strategies for adaptation and mitigation. Through the training, learners will become familiar with the main concepts of gender, climate change and climate-smart agr iculture. They will also understand the relevance of gender dimensions in climate change adaptation and mitigation and in developing gender-responsive CSA interventions. Furthermore, they will learn the steps to take and tools and approaches available for conducting gender analysis and promoting gender mainstreaming in CSA project design, implementation and monitoring. The manual also presents available gender, climate change and CSA guidelines and other relevant materials to support learners in their work in implementing gender-responsive interventions. This training module provides basic information for organizing a short training workshop to develop gender mainstreaming capacities in CSA-related projects, throughout the whole project cycle. Thanks to its scope and wide range of themes surrounding climate change, the ambition is that this book will be a lead publication on the topic, which may be regularly updated and hence capture further works. Climate change is a major global challenge. However, some geographical regions are more severly affected than others. One of these regions is the African continent. Due to a combination of unfavourable socio-economic and meteorological conditions, African countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its impacts. The recently released IPCC special report "Global Warming of 1.5o C" outlines the fact that keeping global warming by the level of 1.5o C is possible, but also suggested that an increase by 2o C could lead to crises with crops (agriculture fed by rain could drop by 50% in some African countries by 2020) and livestock production, could damage water supplies and pose an additonal threat to coastal areas. The 5th Assessment Report produced by IPCC predicts that wheat may disappear from Africa by 2080, and that maize— a staple—will fall significantly in southern Africa. Also, arid and semi-arid lands are likely to increase by up to 8%, with severe ramifications for livelihoods, poverty eradication and meeting the SDGs. Pursuing appropriate adaptation strategies is thus vital, in order to address the current and future challenges posed by a changing climate. It is against this background that the "African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation" is being published. It contains papers prepared by scholars, representatives from social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies, undertaking research and/or executing climate change projects in Africa, and working with communities across the African continent. Encompassing over 100 contribtions from across Africa, it is the most comprehensive publication on climate change adaptation in Africa ever produced.
