Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts in the areas of water science and chemistry from the government, industry, and academic arenas discussed ways to maximize opportunities for these disciplines to work together to develop and apply simple technologies while addressing some of the world's key water and health problems. Since global water challenges cross both scientific disciplines, the chemical sciences have the ability to be a key player in improving the lives of billions of people around the world.

Book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply

Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Book Life Cycle Assessment and Water Management related Issues

Download or read book Life Cycle Assessment and Water Management related Issues written by Joaquim Comas Matas and published by Documenta Universitaria. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Cycle Assessment is a scientific methodology to assess the environmental impact of a product, system or service along its life-cycle. This starts with the extraction of raw materials; follows with the manufacturing, distribution and use stages; and ends with the treatment of waste or byproducts. All this information allows us to avoid transfer of burdens between life cycle stages, geographical regions or environmental impact categories. For example, reducing the amount of material to manufacture a product (i.e. a washing machine, a car or a wastewater treatment plant) while not increasing energy consumption during its use or consumption.\nIn September 2012, from the 3rd to the 7th, the Laboratory of Environmental and Chemical Engineering (LEQUIA) and the Institute of the Environment of the University of Girona organized the 12th International Summer School for the Environment (ISSE) focused on “Life Cycle Assessment and Water issues”. It was framed within the European project Ecotech-Sudoe (www.ecotechsudoe.eu). Following the Lisbon Strategy, the research project Ecotech-Sudoe aims to merge sustainability and competitiveness. Ecotechnologies are powerful tools to achieve this, while providing the same level of service but with lower environmental and social impacts. They are based on emerging and promising research areas, such as social and environmental LCA (Life Cycle Analysis), ecodesign, and industrial and territorial ecology. \n\n\n

Book Climate Protection and Development

Download or read book Climate Protection and Development written by Frank Ackerman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on bloomsburycollections.com. Writing about climate change often falls into one of two opposite traps - predicting either calamity or apathy - both of which this book avoids. This is not a story of gloom and doom, of inevitable climate catastrophe. On the contrary, this book spells out, in more detail than usual, what can and should be done to avert the real risks of disaster. Nor is it one of complacent congratulation for "win-win" initiatives, cautiously incremental steps, and "green" consumer choices. Climate Protection and Development summons us to an endeavour worthy of the resources and ingenuity of the twenty-first century - towards bold initiatives with big costs, and much bigger benefits. This book explores the interconnected issues of climate and development, laying the groundwork for just such a new deal. It presents a challenging agenda, and highlights the needs and perspectives of developing countries which may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable to readers in high-income countries. The unfortunate truth is that any large country, or group of mid-sized countries, can veto any global climate solution by refusing to participate, so a solution will only work if it works for everyone.

Book Scalar Mismatches in Metropolitan Water Governance

Download or read book Scalar Mismatches in Metropolitan Water Governance written by Francine van den Brandeler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides insights into the particular nature of water-related challenges in metropolitan regions of the Global South and the “scalar mismatches” that prevent their sustainable and inclusive development. It argues for the adoption of a metropolitan water governance approach to assess these challenges, including the drivers and institutions that shape these, and the policy instruments at river basin and urban scales that aim to address these. The cases of Mexico City and São Paulo, as two mega-cities with a wide ranging of water-related challenges, present lessons to other fast growing urban agglomerations on the variety of possible responses as well as obstacles to their effectiveness that receive little attention.
