Book Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar Design and Simulation

Download or read book Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar Design and Simulation written by Mark Christopher Fessia and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this project was to design and simulate a frequency modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar system capable of making target range and velocity measurements. MATLAB was used to model each component of the FM-CW radar system and simulate transmit and receive signal behavior, channel effects, and target radar cross section (RCS) characteristics. A top-down approach to the design of the FM-CW radar system was presented beginning with an overview of theory and architecture followed by a detailed explanation of each component in the signal path. Key interactions between components were discussed as well as potential differences between real world components and their simulated counterparts. An overview of the signal processing techniques and software architecture required to make target range and velocity measurements was also presented and implemented. An overall FM-CW radar system simulation was implemented in MATLAB including simulated channel effects and targets. The simulation was run so that resultant target range and velocity measurements were obtained and radar system performance and simulation fidelity were evaluated and presented.

Book Design of a Pulsed Frequency Modulated Ultra Wideband System for High Precision Local Positioning

Download or read book Design of a Pulsed Frequency Modulated Ultra Wideband System for High Precision Local Positioning written by Benjamin Waldmann and published by Logos Verlag Berlin. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decades an ever growing demand for wireless localization systems for many different indoor and outdoor application scenarios could be observed. Applications range from crane and fork-lift positioning to RFID-like asset tracking and access control and many more. Especially indoor applications show severe performance degradation due to heavy multipath effects. Since the resolution of wireless localization systems for all kinds of modulation techniques is proportional to the applied signal bandwidth, systems using ultra-wideband signals offer an excellent potential for accurate indoor positioning. With the accredited bandwidth for UWB systems, an accuracy in the range of a few centimeters is possible. This thesis presents the analysis and design of a pulsed frequency modulated ultra-wideband system for high precision local positioning. Up to now, all commercial available systems are based on the usage of very narrow pulses to generate ultra-wideband signals. To overcome typical limitations of the pure impulse UWB technology, a novel system concept is presented in this work. It combines pulse technology with frequency modulated continuous wave radar technology by chopping the FMCW signal into short pulses. On the one hand this fulfills the UWB regulation requirements, and on the other hand precise control of the signal shape is given for the whole bandwidth. This allows the use of advanced synchronization and distance measurement approaches. The main emphasis of this work is the investigation and realization of this pulsed frequency modulated UWB positioning system. The PFM-UWB system is based on a well-known LPR system, which is extended to an UWB system. Theoretical calculations, simulations and measurements are used to define the system and evaluate its performance. With an implemented demonstrator system, a high accuracy in dense multipath indoor environments can be achieved. Conclusive measurements, that demonstrate the abilities of the developed positioning system, round off this work.

Book Waveform Design for Continuous Wave Radars

Download or read book Waveform Design for Continuous Wave Radars written by Matthias Kronauge and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Radar sensors detect objects, so-called targets, within an observation area and measure range and radial velocity relative to the location of the radar. The simultaneous, highly accurate and unambiguous measurement of range and radial velocity even in multi target situations is a matter of the appropriate waveform design. This thesis describes and analyzes state of the art waveforms for continuous wave radar. Based on these waveforms new approaches and enhancements are presented. In addition to that, detection methods are discussed and improved for the use in combination with the new radar waveforms.

Book Software Defined Radio Based Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book Software Defined Radio Based Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Ground Penetrating Radar written by Patrick Fiske and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar allows for a wide range of research applications. One primary use of this technology and what is explored in this thesis, is imaging in the form of ground penetrating radar. To generate proper results, spectral wide-band reconstruction has been developed to overcome hardware limitations allowing for high resolution radar. Requiring complex reconstruction algorithms, the proposed method benefits greatly in terms of performance and implementation compared to other radar systems. This thesis develops a wideband linearly frequency modulated radar leveraging a software-defined radio (SDR). The modular system is capable of a tunable wideband bandwidth up to the maximum SDR ratings. This high-resolution system is further improved through implementation of grating side-lobe suppression filters that correct for the spectral discontinuities imposed by the reconstruction. These grating lobes are managed through multiple techniques to alleviate any ghost imaging or false positives associated with object detection. The solution provided allows for generally non-coherent devices to operate with synchronous phase giving accurate sample-level measurements. Various corrections are in place as mitigation of hardware transfer functions and system level noise. First the system was theorized and simulated, illuminating the performance of the radar. Following development of the radar, measurements were conducted to confirm proper and accurate object detection. Further experiments were performed ensuring Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) performance as designed. Applications of this work include Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, innovative GPR, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems.
