Book Society Organizations and the Brain building towards a unified cognitive neuroscience perspective

Download or read book Society Organizations and the Brain building towards a unified cognitive neuroscience perspective written by Carl Senior and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book brings together scholars in both the neurosciences and organizational sciences who have adopted various approaches to study the cognitive mechanisms mediating the social behavior that we see within organizations. Such an approach has been termed by ourselves, and others, as ‘organisational cognitive neuroscience’. In recent years there has been a veritable increase in studies that have explored the cognitive mechanisms driving such behaviors, and much progress has been made in understanding the neural underpinnings of processes such as financial exchange, risk awareness and even leadership. However, while these studies are informative and add to our understanding of human cognition they fall short of providing evidence-based recommendations for practice. Specifically, we address the broader issue of how the neuroscientific study of such core social behaviors can be used to improve the very way that we work. To address these gaps in our understanding the chapters in this book serve as a platform that allows scholars in both the neurosciences and the organizational sciences to highlight the work that spans across these two fields. The consolidation of these two fields also serves to highlight the utility of a singular organizational cognitive neuroscience. This is a fundamentally important outcome of the book as the application of neuroscience to address economically relevant behaviors has seen a variety of fields evolve in their own right, such as neuromarketing, neuroeconomics and so forth. The use of neuro-scientific technologies,in particular fMRI, has indeed led to a bewildering (and somewhat suffocating) proliferation of new approaches, however, the speed of such developments demands that we must proceed carefully with such ventures or risk some fundamental mistakes. The book that you now hold will consolidates these new neuroscience based approaches and in doing so highlight the importance of this approach in helping us to understand human social behavior in general. Taken together the chapters provide a framework for scholars within the neurosciences who wish to explore the further the opportunities that the study of organisational behavior may provide.

Book Toward a Unified Criminology

Download or read book Toward a Unified Criminology written by Robert Agnew and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people commit crimes? How do we control crime? The theories that criminologists use to answer these questions are built on a number of underlying assumptions, including those about the nature of crime, free will, human nature, and society. These assumptions have a fundamental impact on criminology: they largely determine what criminologists study, the causes they examine, the control strategies they recommend, and how they test their theories and evaluate crime-control strategies. In Toward a Unified Criminology, noted criminologist Robert Agnew provides a critical examination of these assumptions, drawing on a range of research and perspectives to argue that these assumptions are too restrictive, unduly limiting the types of "crime" that are explored, the causes that are considered, and the methods of data collection and analysis that are employed. As such, they undermine our ability to explain and control crime. Agnew then proposes an alternative set of assumptions, drawing heavily on both mainstream and critical theories of criminology, with the goal of laying the foundation for a unified criminology that is better able to explain a broader range of crimes.

Book A Unified Theory of Party Competition

Download or read book A Unified Theory of Party Competition written by James F. Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates spatial and behavioral perspectives - in a word, those of the Rochester and Michigan schools - into a unified theory of voter choice and party strategy. The theory encompasses both policy and non-policy factors, effects of turnout, voter discounting of party promises, expectations of coalition governments, and party motivations based on policy as well as office. Optimal (Nash equilibrium) strategies are determined for alternative models for presidential elections in the US and France, and for parliamentary elections in Britain and Norway. These polities cover a wide range of electoral rules, number of major parties, and governmental structures. The analyses suggest that the more competitive parties generally take policy positions that come close to maximizing their electoral support, and that these vote-maximizing positions correlate strongly with the mean policy positions of their supporters.

Book Toward a Unified Psychoanalytic Theory

Download or read book Toward a Unified Psychoanalytic Theory written by Morris N Eagle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of th 2023 American Board and Academy of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychology (ABAPPP) Annual Award! This book aims to integrate different psychoanalytic schools and relevant research findings into an integrated psychoanalytic theory of the mind. A main claim explored here, is that a revised and expanded ego psychology constitutes the strongest foundation not only for a unified psychoanalytic theory, but also for the integration of relevant research findings from other disciplines. Sophisticated yet accessible, the book includes a description of the basic tenets of ego psychology and necessary correctives and revisions. It also discusses research and theory on interpersonal understanding, capacity for inhibition, defense, delay of gratification, autonomous ego aims and motives, affect regulation, the nature of psychopathology; and the implications of a revised and expanded ego psychology for approaches to treatment. The book will appeal to readers who are interested in psychoanalysis, the nature of the mind, the nature of psychopathology, and the implications of theoretical formulations and research findings for approaches to treatment. As such, it will also be of great value on graduate and training courses for psychoanalysis.

Book A Unified System Fitness Design

Download or read book A Unified System Fitness Design written by Tra Giang Nguyen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Unified System Fitness Design proposes a new fitness framework that encompasses all fitness indicators in a holistic and comprehensive manner, striving to provide a comprehensive and inclusive definition of physical fitness, one that considers all attributes contributing to overall well-being, and crafting a flexible framework that can adapt to diverse contexts and purposes of physical fitness assessments. This new book is divided into three parts. Part I explores redefining and reconstructing the concepts of an inclusive and holistic fitness framework. In Part II, the reader is encouraged to embark on a journey to discover the interconnected system functions of physiological health, homeostasis, motor control, and energy regulation. Part III reinforces the role of wellness in the Unified Systems Fitness Design, guided by the principles of inclusion and equity, in the decision-making process. Finally, the perpetual complementation theory emerged from the design, making sense of the cyclical connection between the system functions for health and skill and strengthening the Health-Ability-Task Suitability (HATS) Framework. There are still many uncharted territories in the realm of fitness and wellness. A Unified System Fitness Design addresses these gaps in the literature and practice and seeks to inspire a transformative worldview that urges the reader to question the existing paradigms and explore innovative, inclusive approaches that cater to people with unique needs. In doing so, this exciting new volume aims to establish a common language for researchers and practitioners in the field, offering accurate and concise descriptions of each fitness component and its associated indicators in a universally understood terminology.

Book A New Unified Theory of Psychology

Download or read book A New Unified Theory of Psychology written by Gregg Henriques and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about psychology’s fragmentation is not new, but there has for the past decade been increasing calls for psychologists to acknowledge to the costs associated with fragmentation and to search for ways to unify the discipline. A New Unified Theory of Psychology introduces a new system that addresses psychology’s current theoretical and philosophical difficulties. The new theory consists of four interlocking pieces that together provide—for the first time—a macro-level view that clarifies the nature of psychology’s problems and offers a clear way to unify the various elements of the field. The unified theory provides the field of psychology with a well-defined subject matter, allowing both academic and professional psychologists will be able to develop a shared language and conceptual foundation.
