Book Estimation of Coalbed Methane Production Potential Through Reservoir Simulation

Download or read book Estimation of Coalbed Methane Production Potential Through Reservoir Simulation written by Mayank Srivastava and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a reservoir simulation analysis of coalbed methane (CBM) production potential of the Illinois Coal Basin. COMET3, a three-dimensional, three phase, finite-difference simulator capable of modeling single, dual and triple porosity models, was used for simulation analyses. The simulation results provide preliminary estimates of CBM production potential of the region. The results of simulation analyses show that primary CBM recovery potential of the basin is approximately 24% of initial gas-in-place (IGIP), emphasizing the need of enhanced recovery techniques for improving production. Therefore, different enhanced recovery techniques, such as gas injection, horizontal drilling, multi-seam production, and hydraulic fracturing of coal seams, were studied. Gas injection was investigated for three types of gases, namely CO 2 , N 2 and flue gas. The results of the gas injection study indicated an improvement in CBM recovery, with more than 75% of IGIP being recovered in all three cases. The CO 2 injection option resulted in the highest simulated CBM recovery, followed by flue gas and N 2 injection, respectively. It was also found that N 2 breakthrough occurs much earlier than CO 2 , which is indicative of the CO 2 sequestration potential in the basin.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book A Fully Coupled Finite Element Model of Coal Deformation and Two Phase Flow for Coalbed Methane Extraction

Download or read book A Fully Coupled Finite Element Model of Coal Deformation and Two Phase Flow for Coalbed Methane Extraction written by Dong Chen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reservoir simulation model is usually required to represent the combined effects of gas transport, water flow, and coal swelling/shrinking on the extraction of coalbed methane (CBM). Although a number of models have been developed in recent years, most of them are based on coal permeability models under the assumptions of uniaxial strain and constant overburden load. Under these assumptions, coal permeability is defined as a function of pore pressure only. This allows the gas transport and water flow to be decoupled from coal deformation. In this study, these two assumptions are relaxed: a general porosity and effective permeability model is developed to represent the behavior of both the primary medium (coal matrix) and the secondary medium (fractures) under conditions of variable stress. The effective permeability model is defined as a function of effective stress, and can be applied to the full spectrum of mechanical conditions spanning prescribed in-situ stresses through constrained displacement. Moreover the effect of matrix moisture is often ignored in previous simulation studies, but some experimental results showed that the presence of moisture in the coal matrix had profound influences on the gas storage and transport in coal seams by reducing the gas adsorption capacity of the coal, decreasing the gas effective diffusivity through the coal matrix, and varying the coal swelling strain. In order to investigate the magnitude and interplay the moisture effects on CBM production, approximate relationships have been built to quantify the moisture effect on the gas adsorption capacity, the gas effective diffusivity and the coal swelling strain. These relationships have been calibrated by comparison with a selection of literature data. Both the permeability model and the moisture effect correlations are implemented into a fully coupled model of coal deformation, gas transport in the matrix system, and gas-water flow in the fracture system. The FE model has been verified through the history matching of the gas and water production profiles in the Powder River Basin. The verified FE model is applied to conduct a series of parametric studies. These parametric studies illustrate important non-linear responses due to the effective stress that cannot be recovered where mechanical influences are not rigorously coupled with the two-phase flow system.

Book Methane Modeling

Download or read book Methane Modeling written by Fred C. Schwerer and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional, numerical, mathematical model has been developed to predict methane influx into coal mines under a variety of mining conditions. A set of time-dependent, partial differential equations for two-phase Darcy flow in a porous medium was developed. The equations comprehend various microscopic flow phenomena and time- and pressure-dependent adsorption and desorption of methane. One- dimensional models were expanded to two-dimensional models by appropriate geometric modification of the basic equation set. Numerical solutions were obtained with an implicit method-of-lines technique. Boundary conditions corresponding to the appropriate mining system can be selected. The model and solution procedure are coded in a structured dialect of Fortran, and a preprocessor is included for adaptation to popular computer systems. To obtain data for comparison with the model, methane measurements were made in three coal mines in the eastern United States to encompass a range of gas contents, porosities, permeabilities, coal rank, and mining methods. Results of the simulation of methane emission during advance of the mining face following idle periods were in general agreement with observed values. v. 1. contains the final report and summary, methane measurement data, mathematical components, and simulation demonstrations. v. 2. contains a guide to the computer program, flowcharts, and source codes.

Book Sensitivity Analysis of Modeling Parameters that Affect the Dual Peaking Behaviour in Coalbed Methane Reservoirs

Download or read book Sensitivity Analysis of Modeling Parameters that Affect the Dual Peaking Behaviour in Coalbed Methane Reservoirs written by Amarachukwu Ngozi Okeke and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coalbed methane reservoir (CBM) performance is controlled by a complex set of reservoir, geologic, completion and operational parameters and the inter-relationships between those parameters. Therefore in order to understand and analyze CBM prospects, it is necessary to understand the following; (1) the relative importance of each parameter, (2) how they change under different constraints, and (3) what they mean as input parameters to the simulator. CBM exhibits a number of obvious differences from conventional gas reservoirs, one of which is in its modeling. This thesis includes a sensitivity study that provides a fuller understanding of the parameters involved in coalbed methane production, how coalbed methane reservoirs are modeled and the effects of the various modeling parameters on its reservoir performance. A dual porosity coalbed methane simulator is used to model primary production from a single well coal seam, for a variety of coal properties for this work. Varying different coal properties such as desorption time ([tau] t), initial gas adsorbed (Vi), fracture and matrix permabilities ([kappa] f and [kappa] m), fracture and matrix porosity (Ø f and Ø m), initial fracture and matrix pressure (to enable modeling of saturated and undersaturated reservoirs), we have approximated different types of coals. As part of the work, I will also investigate the modeling parameters that affect the dual peaking behavior observed during production from coalbed methane reservoirs. Generalized correlations, for a 2-D dimensional single well model are developed. The predictive equations can be used to predict the magnitude and time of peak gas rate.
