Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A True Sketch of His Army Life Our duties here were light, such as guard duty. Company roll was called five times a day. If a man failed to answer to his name he was marked for extra duty - fatigue duty - which was all sorts and kinds; not very laborious on those who were accustomed to labor at home. On Sunday morning we had to fall in for inspection. That meant every' thing a soldier had, his gun accoutrements, knapsack what he had in it and his tent. If any portion failed to pass inspection he had to make it so it would pass, if it was his brass plates on his accouterments, his gun, or even the brass buttons on his coat, for these were expected to shine as much as possible. At first many of the boys were rather negli gint about how they looked on inspection. But the lessons received we.e sufficient to make us all put on a good appearance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Life of General Nathan Towson, United States Army Raised beneath the roof of a Maryland Farmer, he has throughout life given evidences of those kind sensibilities, which adorn a military commander. As a brave and skillful officer, and polite gentleman, the American army has few equals and no superior. A perusal of the following pages cannot fail to produce a conviction that Towson's Light House decided the fate of many a hard fought battle and though fortune has, for a while deprived him of his just reward, yet time will do him justice and the name of Towson will go down to posterity, as one of the unpretending great men of our country. Book Hospital Life in the Army of the Potomac Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hospital Life in the Army of the Potomac Classic Reprint written by William Howell Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hospital Life in the Army of the Potomac The writer has tried to avoid in this little book a too highly-colored picture of hospital life. lie has rather aimed to present a sketch which should have the merit of simplicity and accuracy even in its minor details, with a full sense of his obligations to the cause of historical truth. The manuscript was not written, in the first instance, for publication, but to preserve, for the writer's own satisfaction, a record of a valuable personal experience. As it grew under his hand, old memories were quickened, old companionships seemed to be renewed, former scenes were revived, and the splendid examples of heroism which were daily and hourly witnessed, kindled an impulse which has resulted in this work. Yielding to the judgment of his friends, he submits it to the public, asking for it a kindly reception. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Captured Scout of the Army of the James

Download or read book The Captured Scout of the Army of the James written by Chaplain Clay Trumbull and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Captured Scout of the Army of the James: A Sketch of the Life Sergeant Henry Mann Manning, of the Twenty-Fourth Mass, Regiment This little sketch is the best, because the only, tribute to the memory of its subject that the writer, amid the pressure of varied duties, can find time to render. Prepared, in great part, for use in a memorial discourse, it has not been rewritten, although extended by additions which perhaps mar the harmony of its first design. The fact that it was shaped to be spoken rather than to be read, - designed for the ear rather than for the eye, - will account, to those accustomed to public address, for some of its unsuitableness of style for the form in which it now appears. Book My Life in the Army Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Life in the Army Classic Reprint written by Robert Blatchford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life in the Army I had to go for a soldier: it was written. Was not my godfather one Wyatt of the 10th Hussars; and did he not carry me to the font in his arms, with my head against his glorious frogged jacket, the plume of his busby towering above me, his spurs clanking on the flagged aisle, and his pelisse - pride of the ladies' hearts - keeping the draughts from my devoted feet? And then, my first recollections are of the grim Crimean War. For we stayed very often in garrison towns; and my mother's people had friends who were officers in the Army. Quite well I can remember - I must have been between three and four years old - a regiment of cavalry starting for the war; and I can remember, or think I can, some wounded soldiers landing, and a wee drummer-boy being carried ashore in a blanket. And, again, the officers, after the war was over, came often to our house; and I heard them talk of camp and battle, and divers strange matters. And yet, again, I lived in Portsmouth all through one beatific summer, when I spent all my leisure time on the fortifications, or witnessing sham fights on Southsea Common, or watching gun drill on the walls, or infantry manoeuvres in the barrack squares. And my toys were soldiers; and I fought battles with battalions of buttons; and I fell, running after a military band, and broke my collar-bone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldier's Sketches Under Fire I think I know the reason why the short trip across Channel was avoided, but, as it behoves me to be very careful about what I say on certain points, I don't state it. I Show the fore part of the boat, the bows being visible in the distance. The doorways on the right are those Of the horse boxes, specially erected on the deck. In fact, the whole liner, with the most creditable completeness and celerity, had been specially fitted up for the use of the troops, still retaining its crew of Lascars, who did the swabbing down and rough work requir 'd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of the Soldier: Sketches From the Western Battle-Front The Kitten in the Crater, are attempts to show the soul of the soldier serving in France as I have seen it during the year and a half that I have been with him. If the truth of the sketches is to be appreciated it is necessary to remember that the soldier depicted is the soldier at the Front, and not the soldier at the Base. The Front calls out the highest in our men, but the Base makes no call on the heroic and magnificent. It lets the best in men lie sleeping and wakes only the commonplace. The noble traits lie hidden while the meaner and more commonplace characteristics are tempted out into the sun. Some, therefore, who have only seen the soldier ten or more miles behind the firing-line are inclined to think that I have painted him whiter than he is, and have left out the mud stains on him. They are mistaken. I have painted him exactly as I have seen him. The whole series of sketches was finished before I had any experience of him at the Base. It is the man at the Front I have sketched, and his glory and greatness were so radiant that the mud on him could not be seen. Download or read book Lights and Shades of Military Life Classic Reprint written by Charles James Napier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lights and Shades of Military Life In stating my reasons for believing in the superiority of the British army, I have attributed its virtues to our constitution. In doing this, I have been led to a com parison between our constitution and that of the United States of America; and thus my reveries have run into general politics, for I considered myself at liberty to range as far as my fancy pleased. When a man gets to France, he generally runs on to Italy - that is what I have done: from comparing constitutions, I have touched upon their results; and, in defending freedom, I have endeavoured to show that it does not belong to republicanism - a form of government which appears to me to be contrary to nature. God has created us of different sizes, both morally and physically; he has also ordained that we should walk upon our feet, and under the direction of our heads. Now, a republican form of government seems as if we were all to agree to be cut to an equal length, and that all who had heads and feet left should walk upon the one or the other, according as the fashion should be decided by a general vote, passed every four years! Now this I do not like. I am very fond of my feet: I buy good worsted Stockings and good boots for them I keep them warm and dry with great care; but I have no idea of their pretending to wearviii preface.
