Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an annotated bibliography of age-appropriate literature and activities, showing children the importance of environmental issues and teaching them the skills to take action. In past years, teaching children about conservation and environmental issues might have been an optional side topic to complement an earth science curriculum, but in today's educational climate, "being green" is a subject with great relevance and importance. This book combines a wide variety of techniques to help students understand environmental issues and gain the skills needed to take action. The children's literature and classroom activities suggested in Think Green, Take Action: Books and Activities for Kids are appropriate for elementary school students from grades three through seven, covering three major environmental issues: endangered species, resource depletion, and pollution. After students have a grasp of the causes of these environmental problems, the final chapter presents ways to take easy action that can create ripples of change across the world. Educators in museums and nature centers, home-schooled children, and their parents comprise an appropriate secondary audience for this instructive text.

Book Saving a Million Species

Download or read book Saving a Million Species written by Lee Hannah and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research paper "Extinction Risk from Climate Change" published in the journal Nature in January 2004 created front-page headlines around the world. The notion that climate change could drive more than a million species to extinction captured both the popular imagination and the attention of policy-makers, and provoked an unprecedented round of scientific critique. Saving a Million Species reconsiders the central question of that paper: How many species may perish as a result of climate change and associated threats? Leaders from a range of disciplines synthesize the literature, refine the original estimates, and elaborate the conservation and policy implications. The book: examines the initial extinction risk estimates of the original paper, subsequent critiques, and the media and policy impact of this unique study presents evidence of extinctions from climate change from different time frames in the past explores extinctions documented in the contemporary record sets forth new risk estimates for future climate change considers the conservation and policy implications of the estimates. Saving a Million Species offers a clear explanation of the science behind the headline-grabbing estimates for conservationists, researchers, teachers, students, and policy-makers. It is a critical resource for helping those working to conserve biodiversity take on the rapidly advancing and evolving global stressor of climate change-the most important issue in conservation biology today, and the one for which we are least prepared.

Book The Secret

Download or read book The Secret written by Byron Preiss and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Book 50 Simple Steps to Save the World s Rainforests

Download or read book 50 Simple Steps to Save the World s Rainforests written by Kim Henderson and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the very best conservation and environmental policy-making efforts, at least 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest disappear each day. If action is not taken now, experts estimate that the world’s rainforests will mostly disappear within 50 years. Currently, the destruction of tropical forests is responsible for 17 percent of man-made carbon emissions-more than what comes from all the world’s cars, airplanes and ships combined! Tropical rainforests need our help-and that’s where 50 Simple Steps to Save the World’s Rainforests comes in. The future of the world’s rainforests lies to a large extent in the collective hands of consumers and how they shop, since demand is what fuels the forces driving deforestation-agriculture, logging, and resource extraction. Through the 50-step journey, you will learn how, as a consumer, you may unwittingly support rainforest destruction and more importantly, precisely how you can make different choices that help save rainforests. For example, you will learn how your paper use and purchases of rayon clothing affect Indonesian rainforests where Sumatran tigers are critically endangered or how simply eating Brazil nuts helps save the Amazon rainforest. You will discover how the cultivation of palm oil, a common ingredient in confections, baked goods, soaps and biofuels, is fueling rampant deforestation in Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea and how you can avoid it. 50 Simple Steps to Save the Rainforests is the ultimate primer for anyone wanting to take action to help save this ecosystem, which is so critical to the future of mankind.

Pueblos presented are in areas of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Jalisco, Cuyutlán in the state of Colima, and Zihuatanejo, or 'Zihua' as it is affectionately known, in the state of Guerrero along Mexico's west coast. The more recent development of Ixtapa near 'Zihua' is included while not claiming the same historical prominence as with the other locations. Also included is the coastal pueblo of Loreto located in the state of Baja California Sur on the shore of the Sea of Cortez. The village is known for its historical importance and ecological resource opportunities. Each chapter is a montage photo presentation illustrating the rustic pueblo environment and lifestyle often missed by the casual outsider while visiting the area. Included also are original poems by the author written from experience to introduce and enhance the visual presentation of each location. Throughout is portrayed the magic of Mexico as a dedication to its humble and proud tradition. The storyline viewing is of a personally passionate journey welcomed by casual congeniality, exotic food and drink, and a stimulating environment. Viewing the photos with narrative and lyrics will be nostalgic for some and a vicarious new adventure for others. All will be exposed to a gentle culture embraced and preserved by each of the four Mexican locations bordering the Pacific Coast and Sea of Cortez.
