Book A TRIBUTE TO THE SADR MARTYRS

Download or read book A TRIBUTE TO THE SADR MARTYRS written by Yasin T. al-Jibouri and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains information which may be available for the first time in English. It discusses three prominent individuals who were executed by the dictatorial government of Saddam Hussein due to their dissent and despite their prominent status as scholars, theologians, thinkers and philosophers who deserve a prominent place in the annals of history. The world is yet to grant them the recognition they deserve, and this book is a humble attempt to introduce them to the conscience of the world. The most prominent among them is Muhammed-Baqir al-Sadr who is famous worldwide for two of his scholarly works: Iqtisaduna (Our Economics) and Falsafatuna (Our Philosophy). He invented a theory about an interest-free banking system which has been hailed as a rebuttal to the capitalist, socialist and Marxist theories of how the financial system of a nation ought to be. His sister, known as “Bint al-Huda,” was a storywriter, social organizer and poetess who used her pen to fight the immoralities of the regime of the “Butcher of Baghdad”. Muhammed Muhammed-Sadiq al-Sadr is the most senior of the three, yet this did not prevent the regime from executing him due to the large following he had, his popularity and outspoken criticism of the oppressive policies of the regime, a man who will always be remembered for his scholarship, dynamic personality and courage.

Book Martyr Cults and Political Identities in Lebanon

Download or read book Martyr Cults and Political Identities in Lebanon written by Sabrina Bonsen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabrina Bonsen sheds light on political cults of martyrs in Lebanon and reconsiders the context of their emergence, development and distinct characteristics since 1920. She examines how the honouring of martyrs became an established practice in Lebanese politics and is crucial to grasp the logic of violence and conflict. Drawing on the case of the Amal movement, the author analyses central narratives to the group’s discourse and practices concerning martyrdom to show how identity construction and strategies of legitimizing power are intertwined. Moreover, the book provides insides into political competition strategies, especially in regards to the two major Shiʿite political actors, Amal and Hizbullah, and takes a new look on martyrdom by going beyond cultural-religious explanations.

Book Martyrdom and Sacrifice in Islam

Download or read book Martyrdom and Sacrifice in Islam written by Meir Hatina and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, the belief system around self sacrifice has become key to understanding the Middle East and its political relationships with the West although much of the literature and conversation has been restricted to modern concepts of jihadism. The recent spate of scholarship relating to suicide bombers and jihadists studies these concepts without a broader understanding of the principle of martyrdom. This book expands on the chronology of self-sacrifice within Islam and contextualises the use of suicide bombings using details of the rise of martyrdom in places such as Iraq, Lebanon, Chechnya and Pakistan. It historicises the background in which 'jihad' has been glorified while also exploring contemporary methods of recruitment, like the use of the internet. The authors pay close attention to the different sects and factions of Islam and the differing interpretations of jihad that accompany these ideologies. In the current political climate, a book that explores martyrdom within the framework of historical perspectives, geographical regions and the influence of outside cultures is essential.

Download or read book The Vanished Imam written by Fouad Ajami and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1978, Musa al Sadr, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Shia sect in Lebanon, disappeared mysteriously while on a visit to Libya. As in the Shia myth of the "Hidden Imam," this modern-day Imam left his followers upholding his legacy and awaiting his return. Considered an outsider when he had arrived in Lebanon in 1959 from his native Iran, he gradually assumed the role of charismatic mullah, and was instrumental in transforming the Shia, a quiescent and downtrodden Islamic minority, into committed political activists. What sort of person was Musa al Sadr? What beliefs in the Shia doctrine did his life embody? Where did he fit into the tangle of Lebanon's warring factions? What was behind his disappearance? In this fascinating and compelling narrative, Fouad Ajami resurrects the Shia's neglected history, both distant and recent, and interweaves the life and work of Musa al Sadr with the larger strands of the Shia past.

Book Writing The Modern History Of Iraq Historiographical And Political Challenges

Download or read book Writing The Modern History Of Iraq Historiographical And Political Challenges written by Riccardo Bocco and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern history of Iraq is punctuated by a series of successive and radical ruptures (coups d'etat, changes of regime, military adventures and foreign invasions) whose chronological markers are relatively easy to identify. Although researchers cannot ignore these ruptures, they should also be encouraged to establish links between the moments when the breaks occur and the longue durée, in order to gain a better understanding of the period.Combining a variety of different disciplinary and methodological perspectives, this collection of essays seeks to establish some new markers which will open fresh perspectives on the history of Iraq in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and suggest a narrative that fits into new paradigms. The book covers the various different periods of the modern state (the British occupation and mandate, the monarchy, the first revolutions and the decades of Ba'thist rule) through the lens of significant groups in Iraq society, including artists, film-makers, political and opposition groups, members of ethnic and religious groups, and tribes.

Book Hizbullah and the Politics of Remembrance

Download or read book Hizbullah and the Politics of Remembrance written by Bashir Saade and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born out of the Israeli occupation of the South of Lebanon, the political armed group Hizbullah is a powerful player within both Lebanon and the wider Middle East. Understanding how Hizbullah has, since the 1980s, developed its own reading of the nature of the Lebanese state, national identity and historical narrative is central to grasping the political trajectory of the country. By examining the ideological production of Hizbullah, especially its underground newspaper Al Ahd, Bashir Saade offers an account of the intellectual continuity between the early phases of Hizbullah's emergence onto the political stage and its present day organization. Saade argues here that this early intellectual activity, involving an elaborate understanding of the past and history had a long lasting impact on later cultural production, one in which the notion and practice of Resistance has been central in developing national imaginaries.

Book Squandered Victory

  • Author : Larry Diamond

Download or read book Squandered Victory written by Larry Diamond and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's leading expert on democracy delivers the first insider's account of the U.S. occupation of Iraq-a sobering and critical assessment of America's effort to implant democracy In the fall of 2003, Stanford professor Larry Diamond received a call from Condoleezza Rice, asking if he would spend several months in Baghdad as an adviser to the American occupation authorities. Diamond had not been a supporter of the war in Iraq, but he felt that the task of building a viable democracy was a worthy goal now that Saddam Hussein's regime had been overthrown. He also thought he could do some good by putting his academic expertise to work in the real world. So in January 2004 he went to Iraq, and the next three months proved to be more of an education than he bargained for. Diamond found himself part of one of the most audacious undertakings of our time. In Squandered Victory he shows how the American effort to establish democracy in Iraq was hampered not only by insurgents and terrorists but also by a long chain of miscalculations, missed opportunities, and acts of ideological blindness that helped assure that the transition to independence would be neither peaceful nor entirely democratic. He brings us inside the Green Zone, into a world where ideals were often trumped by power politics and where U.S. officials routinely issued edicts that later had to be squared (at great cost) with Iraqi realities. His provocative and vivid account makes clear that Iraq-and by extension, the United States-will spend many years climbing its way out of the hole that was dug during the fourteen months of the American occupation.

Book Arabism and Islam

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christine M. Helms
  • Publisher : DIANE Publishing
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 1428981926
  • Pages : 50 pages

Download or read book Arabism and Islam written by Christine M. Helms and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s, Islamic activists in the Arab Middle East have challenged the definition of "legitimate authority" and provided the means and rationale for revolutionary change, hoping to pressure established governments to alter domestic and foreign policies. No nation-state has been immune. Fearful Arab nationalist leaders, unwilling or unable to abandon decades of ideological baggage, have begun a gradual, if erratic, process of melding the spirit and letter of Islamic precepts into existing national laws and political rhetoric. Whether it is adequate to the challenge, the state nevertheless bears the onus of accommodation, because Islam and Arabism will not soon disappear. They will assume new form and substance in the changing realities of the region. Dilemmas inherent to this century and the gauntlet delivered to hitherto unquestioned political caveats will continue to exacerbate the competition between Islam and Arabism, their quest for political platforms and supporters, and the credibility of all other claimants, including the state. Visions of the future, especially when they are sacred and apocalyptic, can never be entirely freed of historical, emotive baggage. Even if Islamic political activism and pan-Arabism diminish in their intensity, they will endure as subtle, formative forces in all aspects of life. Indigenous inhabitants are fully aware that these influences have profound resonance in their lives. At the same time, these forces act like invisible sentinels in the mind, standing ready to cast a long shadow as unconscious motivators of political behavior. Sections are as follows: Declaration of Crisis; Pluralism: Minorities in the Arab World; Stateless Nations and Nationless States: Twentieth Century Disunity; Search for Unity: An Arab Sunni Core; Arabs and Non-Arabs: The Myth of Equality; Fatal Wounds: Universal Islam Takes the Offensive; and The State: Visionary Futures.
