It condenses life in all its many situations into easily relatable compositions. Written in a plain English style the author brings animation to life's most challenging and heartfelt occasions in a way the reader can grasp as a "moment in time" they themselves have lived, or have witnessed in other people's lives. Showing a sense of understanding not often encountered in the flighty poetry of many, the author has a deep and heartfelt grasp of the inner soul in writing these poems. When reading these poems, there will be an applicable understanding of the feelings expressed.Literally every poem has a story to tell. Whether it be the melody unheard, but felt, from the many song lyrics in the first chapter, which express many stories about life in a myriad of situations, or to the many other topics covered, all conveying their "moment" as all consuming. The reader is put into and becomes one with, the "moment".There are several categories of poems to give the reader a "change of pace," as it were. Thus so, allowing for a different subject matter when wanted and the reader can alternate from one subject matter to another seamlessly when a different mood entices them.Using the Table of Content can get readers to a specific area of interest for quick look ups. It is well defined and categorized so anyone can see at a glance what may appeal to them and easily explore and find a certain poem or thought that fits special needs or desires. Every one has a poem in this book that defines or relives an occasion in their lives. So, there is something aimed toward everyone here. The first chapter is where you find all the song lyrics, separated into four categories. The first being the COMEDY lyrics. As levity is always a good start in any situation. In the second category you find SPIRITUAL. These are family based and talking to GOD. The third category being PATRIOTIC have two songs. One about the country and the other about the next terrorist. The fourth and last category being MIXED LOVE AND LOST LOVE THEMES, have many lyrics which the reader will find are heart felt, true life, story themesThe second chapter DIVERSE THOUGHT, contains three categories. POLITICS: Which are in this day, controversial at best. Pick a side. This area contains three statement poems. Some will hate them, some will love them. But all are thought provoking. The next category, AGING: has two poems meant to be satirical. But some may think it is otherwise. The last category is RANDOM THOUGHTS; Which just like its name, is what they are. Covering different subjects The third chapter TRUE LOVE AND DEVOTION; are just what the title implies. These are the "just you and me" scenarios Lots of feel good love expression moments. The fourth chapter LOST LOVE: is as expected, the poems about the sadder side of life. We've all been there. And probably, there are more poems here that we have lived through, or seen others go through, than any want to admit. And lastly, the fifth chapter. The author has added his Fathers song lyrics as an acknowledgement and tribute of and to his contribution to the song writing world. If you harbor a certain feeling or desire to read about something your experiencing or have gone through in the past, this book could possibly give you some solace, or may just have the, "put into words", poem you have been looking for.It is hard to believe you haven't lived one of these poems sometime in your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deeper than Reason takes the insights of modern psychological and neuroscientific research on the emotions and brings them to bear on questions about our emotional involvement with the arts. Robinson begins by laying out a theory of emotion, one that is supported by the best evidence from current empirical work on emotions, and then in the light of this theory examines some of the ways in which the emotions function in the arts. Written in a clear and engaging style, her book will make fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in the emotions and how they work, as well as anyone engaged with the arts and aesthetics, especially with questions about emotional expression in the arts, emotional experience of art forms, and, more generally, artistic interpretation. Part One develops a theory of emotions as processes, having at their core non-cognitive 'instinctive' appraisals, 'deeper than reason', which automatically induce physiological changes and action tendencies, and which then give way to cognitive monitoring of the situation. Part Two examines the role of the emotions in understanding literature, especially the great realistic novels of the nineteenth century. Robinson argues that such works need to be experienced emotionally if they are to be properly understood. A detailed reading of Edith Wharton's novel The Reef demonstrates how a great novel can educate us emotionally by first evoking instinctive emotional responses and then getting us to cognitively monitor and reflect upon them. Part Three puts forward a new Romantic theory of emotional expression in the arts. Part Four deals with music, both the emotional expression of emotion in music, whether vocal or instrumental, and the arousal of emotion by music. The way music arouses emotion lends indirect support to the theory of emotion outlined in Part One. While grounded in the science of emotion, Deeper than Reason demonstrates the continuing importance of the arts and humanities to our lives.

Book The Soul in the Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael R. Trimble
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2007-04-17
  • ISBN : 0801892368
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book The Soul in the Brain written by Michael R. Trimble and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-04-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative study, Michael R. Trimble, M.D., tackles the interrelationship between brain function, language, art—especially music and poetry—and religion. By examining the breakdown of language in several neuropsychiatric disorders, he identifies brain circuits that are involved with metaphor, poetry, music, and religious experiences. Drawing on this body of evidence, Trimble argues that religious experiences and beliefs are explicable biologically and relate to brain function, especially of the nondominant hemisphere. Inspired by the writings and reflections of his patients—many of whom have epilepsy, psychosis, or affective disorders—Trimble asks how the human species, so enamored of its own logic and critical facilities, has held from the dawn of civilization strong religious beliefs and a reverence for the arts. He explores topics such as the phenomena of hypergraphia and hyper-religiosity, how religious experiences and poetic expression are neurologically linked with our capacity to respond to music, and how neuropsychiatric disorders influence behaviors related to artistic expression and religiosity by disturbing brain function. With the sensitivity of a dedicated doctor and the curiosity of an accomplished scholar, Trimble offers an insightful analysis of how the study of people with paradigmatical neuropsychiatric conditions can be the cornerstone to unraveling some of the mysteries of the cerebral representations of our highest cultural experiences.
