Book excerpt: Given that we meet evils in every quarter of the world, could it be governed by an all-good and all-powerful deity? Whilst some philosophers argue that the problem of evil is strong evidence for atheism, others claim that all of the evils in our world can be explained as requirements for deeper goods. On the other hand, skeptical theists believe in God, but struggle with the task of explaining the role of evils in our world. Skeptical theism tackles the problem of evil by proposing a limited skepticism about the purposes of God, and our abilities to determine whether any given instance is truly an example of gratuitous evil. This collection of 22 original essays presents cutting-edge work on skeptical theistic responses to the problem of evil and the persistent objections that such responses invite. Divided into four sections, the volume discusses the epistemology of sceptical theism, conditions of reasonable epistemic access, the implications for theism, and the implications for morality.

Book excerpt: This book is an exercise in philosophical criticism. What I criticize are some variations on a recurrent theme in religious thought: the theme that faith and reason are so disparate that faith is not undermined, but strengthened, if we judge that reason can give it no support. The common name for this view is Fideism. Those representatives of it that I have chosen to discuss do more, however, than insist on keeping faith free of the alleged contaminations of philosophical argument. They consider the case for Fideism to be made even stronger if one judges that reason cannot give us truth or assurance outside the sphere of faith any more than within it. In other words, they sustain their Fideism by an appeal to Skepticism. I call them, therefore, Skeptical Fideists. Skeptical Fideism is not a mere historical curiosity. Richard Popkin has shown us how wide its impact in the formative period of modern philosophy has been; and its impact on modern theological and apologetic reasoning has been immense. In my view, anyone who wishes to assess many of the assump tions current in the theologies of our time has to take account of it; I think, therefore, that there is a topical value in examining the figures whose views I discuss here - Erasmus, Montaigne, Bayle, and more importantly, Pascal and Kierkegaard.

Book The Hiddenness Argument

Download or read book The Hiddenness Argument written by J. L. Schellenberg and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many places and times, and for many people, God's existence has been rather less than a clear fact. According to the hiddenness argument, this is actually a reason to suppose that it is not a fact at all. The hiddenness argument is a new argument for atheism that has come to prominence in philosophy over the past two decades. J. L. Schellenberg first developed the argument in 1993, and this book offers a short and vigorous statement of its central claims and ideas. Logically sharp but so clear that anyone can understand, the book addresses little-discussed issues such as why it took so long for hiddenness reasoning to emerge in philosophy, and how the hiddenness problem is distinct from the problem of evil. It concludes with the fascinating thought that retiring the last of the personal gods might leave us nearer the beginning of religion than the end. Though an atheist, Schellenberg writes sensitively and with a nuanced insider's grasp of the religious life. Pertinent aspects of his experience as a believer and as a nonbeliever, and of his own engagement with hiddenness issues, are included. Set in this personal context, and against an authoritative background on relevant logical, conceptual, and historical matters, The Hiddenness Argument's careful but provocative reasoning makes crystal clear just what this new argument is and why it matters.

Book God for the Skeptic

Download or read book God for the Skeptic written by Katie A. Larsell and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the spiritual path of skeptics with special attention to their connection to the sacred. A skeptic has a stance of questioning around religion and often rejects the concept of God especially the God of supernatural theism. Many skeptics question God as they enter late adolescence. At this developmental stage, as described by stage of faith theory, the skeptic awakens to the force of reason and may choose a secular set of beliefs. The modern worldview of science and material progress is associated with this stage of faith development. In midlife another stage of faith may develop that allows more contradiction, is more inclusive of other points of view, and often re-incorporates old beliefs. This midlife stage of faith resonates with the postmodern worldview that is coming into existence now, driven by globalization and personal computers. For some skeptics, midlife is a time they might re-examine belief in God. However, if they return to belief in God it will not be the same concept of God they left behind in late adolescence. The modern worldview coupled with the Christian emphasis on belief, contribute to losing belief in God. Panentheism, process theology and God as creativity are theologies using different metaphors for God which are compatible with modern and postmodern worldviews. Religious Naturalism and process philosophy are two ways for skeptics to connect with the sacred without God. Ecotheology, as described by Jay McDaniel, may provide a healing theology for the Unitarian Universalist faith tradition, with its theological diversity. McDaniel describes the horizontal sacred and the vertical sacred metaphors which unifies many different sacred beliefs. This theology reduces differences between belief and disbelief in God (God/No God), allowing for a bond across the God/No God divide. Skeptics are an important component of Unitarian Universalist theological diversity.
