Book Liquor Prohibition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Liquor Prohibition Classic Reprint written by Archibald Douglas Dabney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Liquor Prohibition This book is not a treatise on the Prohibition of Intoxicating Liquors, but a mere collation of the decisions construing such statutes. It is intended to arrange these decisions in as logical a manner as possible with reference to the various provisions of the National Prohibition Act, and to so digest them as to give a ready reference to the reported cases. In the endeavor to finish the book as quickly as possible after the law became effective, most valuable assistance was given by Mr. James F. Minor, author of Minor on Workmen's Compensation Laws, and by Mr. Homer Ritchey, author of Ritchey on Federal Employers' Liability Act, both of the Charlottesville, Virginia bar, to each of whom grateful appreciation is given. Download or read book Digest of the Laws of Virginia of a Criminal Nature Classic Reprint written by James Muscoe Mathews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Digest of the Laws of Virginia of a Criminal Nature No apology is needed, to the profession, for presenting them with a second edition of this Digest. The first edition made its appearance just before the commencement of the late civil war, when the demand for legal publications was very limited. Inter arma silent leges. At the close of hostilities, so much of the first edition as remained on hand was destroyed by the great conflagration in Richmond city, to wit, in April, 1865. Since that time the greater part of the criminal statutes have been amended and re-enacted, new statutes passed, and several volumes of decisions of the Supreme Court of Appeals have been published. Other changes have been made necessary by the new State Constitution, prefixed to the work. While this edition was passing through the press, and just after the last chapter had been printed, the Acts of 1870-1871 were published, making further changes in the criminal law, particularly in the chapters on "Trial and its Incidents," and the "Penitentiary;" and a law has been enacted enlarging the jurisdiction of Justices of the Peace. These may be found in the Addenda, at the end of the work. The subjects in this, as in the first edition, were alphabetically arranged, but through inadvertence of the printers, this arrangement has been partially altered. The alteration was not detected in time to have it corrected. Some valuable forms for clerks of courts in swearing and charging juries may be found incorporated with the notes, in their appropriate places. My maternal grandfather, Hon. Vincent A. Wade, after whom I was named, was a man of some political prominence in his county, having been frequently elected a member Of the Kentucky Legislature. He was descended, I think, from the Welsh. My maternal grand mother was an Utley, and was born near Raleigh, N. An effort has been made to include all cases arising under the Act, supplemented by such additional citations as may be of use in actual trial work. The author has constantly kept in mind that one of the purposes to be served by this book is: that it may afford ready and quick reference to the law on its particular subject. Not only in the office but in the court room. Consequently he has tried to make it as compact as possible consistent with thoroughness of treatment. Book A Treatise on the Laws Regulating the Manufacture and Sale of Intoxicating Liquors Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on the Laws Regulating the Manufacture and Sale of Intoxicating Liquors Classic Reprint written by Henry Campbell Black and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-29 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Laws Regulating the Manufacture and Sale of Intoxicating Liquors In regard to the plan of construction of the work, the author has not departed from the theories which have characterized his former contri butions to legal literature, and which, in his judgment, must serve to account for the very gratifying degree of favor with which those efforts have been received by his professional brethren. His constant aim has been to make a thoroughly practical treatise - a useful tool for the work ing lawyer. And to this end, he has endeavored to secure an orderly and scientific arrangement of his subject, a clear and concise statement of its rules and principles, and an abundant but judicious citation of authorities. No pains have been spared, in the way of section-headings, index, and other such helps, to make the contents of the hook easily and quickly accessible at any point. And for a similar reason. Parallel refer ences have been given, in the case of all decisions concurrently reported, to the various periodicals composing the National Reporter System, as also to the series of American Decisions and American Reports. The citations have been brought down to the present date. Finally, although no branch of the subject has been unduly enlarged upon at the expense of the others, particular attention has been given to matters connected with criminal prosecutions under the liquor laws, to the doctrines of criminal responsibility and the constituent elements of the various statutory offenses, and to the rules applicable to the framing of indictments and the admissibility and sufficiency of evidence, as well in general as in relation to the specific crimes. It is thus hoped that those who may be called upon to prosecute or defend actions of this char acter will find the work specially serviceable to them in the office and the court-room. H. C. B.
