Book A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew Classic Reprint written by Samuel Rolles Driver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew The present small volume was designed originally as an attempt to supply what had for long appeared to me to be needed in England by the student of Hebrew - a systematic exposition, upon an adequate scale, of the nature and use of the Hebrew tenses. The subject is an important one, and is beset by many and peculiar difficulties. In Hebrew, as in most other inflexional languages, the verb is a flexible and elastic instrument, the smallest movement of which alters the character of the scene or fact which it pourtrays; and hence, without a vivid sense of the difference between its principal parts, the full power and beauty of the language can be but imperfectly appreciated. At the same time, Hebrew has but two tenses at its disposal: each of these therefore has practically to cover the ground occupied in an Aryan language by half a dozen or more distinct formations, every one denoting a fresh relation of time or mood. Download or read book A Short Account of the Hebrew Tenses Classic Reprint written by R. H. Kennett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Account of the Hebrew Tenses The present volume is an attempt to give an account of the nature and use of the Tenses in Hebrew in a form suitable for those who have but recently begun the study of the language, and who have not attained to such proficiency as will enable them to use with advantage Professor Driver's indispensable book. I have commonly found in teaching, that a student's chief difficulty in the Hebrew verbs is to grasp the meaning which they conveyed to the minds of the Hebrews themselves; that is to say, there is a tendency to assign as equivalents to each of the Hebrew Tenses a certain number of Latin or English forms by which that particular Tense may commonly be translated. The result is a failure to perceive many of those fine shades of meaning, which give such life and vigour to the language of the Old Testament. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Hebrew Grammar Although so modest in size that it may be mis taken for an elementary treatise, it should perhaps rather be considered as the most scientific discussion of the Hebrew language which has yet been produced. While it was suggested by Justus Olshausen's Lehr buch, it is not an epitome of that work, but a really independent production.
