Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery, Vol. 1 of 2 Many of the illustrations are copied from previous authors, while some are original. The following quotation from the preface to Tyler Smith's 'manual of Obstetrics will explain why the source of the copied woodcuts has not been in each instance acknowledged: 'when I began to publish, I determined to give the authority for every wood cut copied from other works. I soon found, however, that obstetric authors of all countries, from the time of Mauriceau downwards, had copied each other so freely without acknow ledgment as to render it difficult or impossible to trace the originals.' The Author has to express his acknowledgments to many friends for their kind assistance by the loan of illustra tions and otherwise, and more especially to his colleague. Dr. Hayes, for his valuable aid in passing the work through the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smellie's Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery, Vol. 2 The following Collections are intended to confirm and illustrate the method of practice recommended in my former Treatise, or first volume upon Midwifery; and are placed in the same order observed in that performance, to which they have references, as well as to a series of tables, to the number of thirty-nine, now ready for publication, which I have prepared, with a view to demonstrate and explain what otherwise might not be so well understood. These will, in some measure, supply the want of proper references in the former impressions of the first volume; though that defect is remedied in this edition. Between the years 1722 and 1739, while I practised in the country, I took notes of all the remarkable cases that occurred in midwifery; but in London, since the year 1740 to the present time, I have been more careful and minute in forming a Collection, with a view to make it public. From a great number of instances, I have selected only the most material, and such as were best adapted to the nature of my plan; for I was unwilling to tire the reader with a succession of parallel histories that contain nothing essentially different from one another. In order to render the performance still more complete, I have taken from authors of the best authority a few extraordinary cases which seldom occur, as well as borrowed some medical transactions from the most approved modern physicians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Midwifery, Vol. 2 of 2 Under some conditions, more particularly after premature rupture of the membranes, plugging the vagina (in this case with an india-rubber bag) is of great service; indeed owing to the counter-pressure which is thus exerted, it is also indicated where in spite of inefficient pains there is reason to fear a premature discharge of the liquor amnii. If the cervix dilates too slowly; if it offers a prolonged resistance, if the delay is caused by the escape Of too much liquor amnii, the cervix and the lower segment of the uterus 'may be dilated by means of Tarnier's or Barnes' bags (cf. Induction Of Premature Labour). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery Four years have passed since the last American edition was issued, and this period has worked a revolution in the results attained in sev eral forms of Obstetric surgery: notably is this the case in the Form Caesarean Operation; the conservative Caesarean operation; and the exsective method Of treating extra-uterine pregnancy where the foetus is alive and of Viable development. The Porro operation has fallen in its rate of mortality since 1884 from 58 to less than 20 per cent. And the Conservative or Improved Caesarean, from 45 per cent. To a general average of 20 per cent., and for Continental Europe of 12. The exsective Operation named had had but one case prior to 1885, but has now had five without the death of a mother. These facts are not mentioned in the last English edition. Laparo-elytrotomy, which was attracting considerable attention four years ago, has almost ceased to exist, by reason of the diminished death-rate under the improved Caesarean section, which in Germany has been one case lost In eight. Laparo-elytrotomy has therefore not been performed since September 18, 1887. The Editor has brought up the work to date upon these subjects, and their statistical records to the close of the year 1888. All Of the American additions, except the article upon the forceps, have been either rewritten or remodelled, and many new and short notes have been added where required. The work has been sufficientlv Americanized, upon the points Where English and American Obstetri cians differ in Opinion and practice, to fit it for the uses of American medical students and Obstetricians. All notes and additions have been distinguished by enclosure in brackets J. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Midwifery, Vol. 1 There he began to study Midwifery under E. C. J. Von Siebold, and soon developed a strong liking for this department of Medicine. In 1852 he visited Vienna, and afterwards England, Scotland, and Ireland, in order to study the methods of procedure in the Lying-in Institutions of these countries. Shortly after his return to Gottingen he published(1858) an excellent Compendium of Midwifery, and in 1860 was appointed Professor Extraordinarius of Midvifery in the University. The following year he was called to Freiburg as Prof. Ordinarius, and two years afterwards(1864) removed to Konigsberg, which however he again quitted on being appointed(1865) Professor at Breslau. In 1870 in conjunction with Crede, S. started the Archiv fr Gynakologie, and throughout his life was a constant and valuable contributor. Meanwhile he was accumulating a large practice, which however did not prevent him from devoting much time to the great work with which his name is mainly associated, viz. the Lehrbuch der Geburtshulfe, of which the following pages are a translation. The Lehrbuch appeared in 1878, and became so popular that in 1880 and edition was called for, and S. was far advanced with its preparation at the time of his death. Symptoms of failing health appeared in the summer of 1880, but so great was S. 's enthusiasm for his work, that it was with difficulty that he could be persuaded to abandon it for a season. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Practice of Medicine, Vol. 2 of 2 The nervous system gives to organized matter all the peculiar functions of animal life, and in its higher states of development, renders it a fit recipient for the powers of reason and moral feeling. In a state of health, or freedom from irritation, it qualifies man for the enjoyment and communication of happiness - when disordered, it may render him the most deplorable and abject of created beings. Exalted mental endowments, equanimity, and benevolence, may be converted into imbecility, waywardness, and misanthropy; meek piety into the wildness and intolerance of fanaticism; confidence into universal mistrust, and friendship into hatred, by morbid conditions of this component of the human organization. The chronic diseases of the nervous system may be divided into two classes - viz: 1. Those in which the sensorial or muscular functions are morbidly affected, either separately or conjointly; 2. Those in which the intellectual and moral powers are disordered. The first of these classes comprehends a great variety of affections - characterized either by a perversion, or a morbid activity, or abolition of one or more of the sensorial functions; or by spasm, or convulsion, or paralysis, of a greater or less portion of the muscular system. The examples of singularly perverted sensorial function are numerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
