This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History and Principles of Ancient Commerce These Lectures were delivered at Waterford, in the beginning of the year 1833. At that time I held the office of Manager of the Waterford branch of the Provincial Bank of Ireland. When residing in London I had assisted at the formation of the City of London Literary and Scientific Institution, and was a member of the first Committee of Management, in the year 1825. At my suggestion an institution somewhat similar was formed at Waterford; and, as professional lecturers were not to be obtained, some of those gentlemen who had taken an active part in its formation, and others connected with scientific pursuits, consented to become lecturers. The example was set by the President, Thomas Wyse, Esq., M.P., who, in his own locality, showed the same zeal in the cause of education which has characterised his public exertions. A portion of ray own labours in this way consisted of the following Lectures on the history and principles of ancient commerce. Download or read book A History of Commerce Classic Reprint written by Clive Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Commerce The year 1914 marks one of the great turning points in history. I have accordingly revised the part Of this book covering the recent'period to close the narrative at that date, and have added another part, covering the history Of commerce in the war and in the two or three years Of peace immediately following. The commerce Of the great nations of the world has departed since 1914 far from its accustomed paths and forms. In my attempt to make intelligible the commercial changes Of the time I have had to take account Of matters in public finance, currency and foreign exchange which are usually treated apart from the history Of international trade. I have thought it better, by touching on these outside subjects, to show the reasons for the course which commerce has followed, rather than to omit the reasons because they are hard for the student Of the history of commerce to understand. Book History of Commerce and Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Commerce and Industry Classic Reprint written by Cheesman A. Herrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Commerce and Industry This book is an outgrowth of eleven years' experience in teaching history to commercial classes at the Philadelphia Cen tral High School. In preparing it the aim has been the same as the aim Of the teaching: viz., to present the essentials of his tory from the commercial and industrial point of view. The purpose has been to furnish the history Of a great movement or tendency rather than the history of nations. It will be Obvious to those who use the book that the 'writer's interests have been primarily in commercial history. The writer accepts as true a recent statement Of Canon Hen son, that knowledge Oi the past is a great emancipating power Of the present, and that ignorance Of the past is one of the present's greatest curses. History treated as a record of social progress may become one of the great cementing forces Of society. With what aspect of the past shall history deal? It is quite correct to say that history is the outgrowth of the age in which it is written and that the various interpretations which have been given it are but reflections Of the varying and dominant interests Of society. Not many years ago, Edward A. F ree man's famous dictum, history is past politics and politics are present history, found general acceptance; but this sentiment is no longer generally approved. Clearly there is at present a desire to select those interests Of the past which most bear on the present. For a considerable time, the tendency has been Obvious for both writers and teachers to emphasize economic and social history rather than the history Of war or Of the evolu tion Of governmental systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial History: An Introductory Treatise, for the Use of Advanced Classes in Schools Commerce means the exchange of commodities, especially on a large scale between different countries and districts. Commerce promotes the intercourse of nations, who thus learn from and influence one another; the competition of commerce stimulates intellectual activity, fosters enterprise, promotes exploration and colonising, produces wealth, and thus adds to the resources of a nation, and supplies the fund from which the revenue is replenished, and literature, art, and science are supported. Commerce is thus a most important factor in civilisation. The progress of civilisation is a topic with which history deals, and therefore commerce as one of the factors of civilisation plays an important part in history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Trade: Or Outlines of a Theory of Profits and Prices, Including an Examination of the Principles Which Determine the Relative Value of Corn, Labour, and Currency Of the matter and substance of the work itself it becomes me to speak and to think with great humility; for at this moment there is perhaps no subject more gly, if 11 ot hopelessly, beset with difficulty, than the first principles of economical science. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Law of Private Corporations IT is generally recognized that, while legislatures may endeavor to direct, courts should follow the business habits of the people, and, without thwarting what custom has found convenient, render decisions in accordance with scientifically adjusted principles of justice. Even then the law must be somewhat behind the practice of the business community; for questions cannot be litigated until the transactions giving rise to them have been engaged in, and although business men seek to act with reference to the law, occasions for novel methods of business continually arise, and novel questions come before the courts. It is clear, moreover, that though a court bring the decision of the novel point within recognized legal principles, some extension or modification of the law has occurred. And thus courts continually change the law by en deavoring to keep it abreast of the people's life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
