AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Police of London; Containing a Detail of the Various Crimes and Misdemeanors by Which Public and Private Property and Security Are, at Present, Injured and Endangered: And Suggesting Remedies for Their Prevention The Police of the Metropolis is a subject of great importance to be known and understood; since every innocent and useful Member of the Community has a particular interest in the correct administration of whatever relates, to the morals of the People - to the protection of the Public against depredation and fraud - and to the prevention of Crimes. It is a species of knowledge which cannot fail to force itself upon the attention; the present insecurity with regard to property, and in some instances with respect to life itself, has become a subject so truly interesting, that every information upon it must be generally desirable. With an immediate view to this particular object, the Author has submitted to the consideration of the reader, a variety of evils of great magnitude, with other specific details; which are not to be found in books, and which of course, have never been laid before the Public through the medium of the Press. It may naturally be expected, that such an accumulation of delinquency, systematically detailed, and placed in so prominent a point of view, must excite a considerable degree of astonishment, in the minds of those readers who have not been familiar with subjects of this nature. This astonishment will perhaps create a desire to investigate how far the amazing extent of the depredations upon the public stated in this Work, can be reconciled to reason and possibility. Should any doubts be entertained on this subject, the Reader is referred to the general view given of the vast magnitude and proud height to which the commerce of the Metropolis has advanced. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive history of police reform, charting its history from its origins in the early 18th century to the most recent examples in the 21st century of the Labour, Coalition and Conservative governments. Each key reform programme is explored in the social, political, and intellectual context of its time, how the necessary legislation was passed, how each programme was implemented, and what its legacy has been. This is the first study that concentrates on the key reforms that shaped the modern police service, their enduring legacies, and their underlying flaws. It is an essential read for police historians, criminologists, police academics, policy makers, and everyone interested in police history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Policing the City, Harris seeks to explain the transformation of criminal justice, particularly the transformation of policing, between the 1780s and 1830s in the City of London. As utilitarian legal reformers argued that criminal deterrence ought to be based on certain and rational punishment rather than random execution, they also had to control the discretionary authority of enforcement. This meant in theory and practice the centralization of policing in the 1830s, and the end of local policing, which was seen as corrupt, inefficient, and unsuitable for rational criminal justice. Revolutionary changes in policing began locally, however, in the 1780s. Such local changes preceded and inspired national reforms, and local policing up to the centralizing measures of the 1830s remained dynamic, responsive, and locally accountable right until its demise. Anxiety about policing had as much to do with the social origins of the police as it did about the origins of criminality, and control over the discretionary authority of watchmen and constables played a larger role in criminal justice reform than the nature of crime. The national, metropolitan, and City police reforms of the late 1830s were thus the culmination of a contentious argument over the meanings of justice, efficiency, and order, rather than its beginning. Harris's evidence reveals how what we've come to think of as "modern" policing evolved out of local practice and reflects shifts in wider debates about crime, justice, and discretionary authority.
