Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Faith and Influence of the Gospel But see we proceed, let us, in explanation of the term faith, advert to the wide distinction which obtains between the popular imagination of what it is, and the Apostle's definition of what it is. The common conception about it is, that it consists in a correct apprehension of the truths of theology uor soundness of belief as opposed to error of belief. It appears to be a very prevalent isnpres. M that faith lies in our judging rightly of the doctrines of the Bible - or that we have a proper understanding of them. And, in this way, the pri vileges annexed to faith in the New Testament, are very apt to be regarded as a sort of remuneration for the soundness of our orthodoxy. Heaven is viewed as a kind of reward, if not for the worth of our doings, at least for the worth and the justness of our dog mats. Under the old economy, eternal life was held out as a return to us for right practice. Under the new economy, is it conceived by many, that it is held out to us as a return for right thinking. Figure two theologians to be listed, the one against the other, in controversy. He who espouses error is estimated to be a heretic, and wanting in the faith. He who espouses truth, is estimated to be a sound believer, so that his faith resolves itself into the accuracy of his creed. It is not, Do this, and you shall live - but it is, Think thus, and you shall live. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint written by A. A. Berle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Book The Gospel and Its Tributaries Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel and Its Tributaries Classic Reprint written by Ernest Findlay Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and Its Tributaries My aim in the book has been to indicate how Chris tianity drew into itself many tributary elements, and in so doing transformed them, so that the result was not some nondescript composite religion, but a new and in some ways more adequate expression of the message of Jesus. The survey is limited to the period covered by the New Testament. My first intention was to extend it to the time of the Council of Nicaea, for it was in the second and third centuries that the fusion of Christian belief with contemporary thought was carried fully into effect. But the traditional View of the New Testa ment as complete in itself is not wholly artificial. In that first century the gospel was formulated, the forces which were to modify it came definitely into play, the task which lay before it was clearly envisaged. The subsequent period only wrote out again in larger characters what may be read in the New Testa ment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Life: Thoughts Introductory to the Study of Christian Doctrine In this respect we may justly lay stress on the personal effort to grow better and on the confident expectation of general progress, in spite of numberless disappointments and delays. SO through this unconquerable persistence Of effort, failure becomes 'a triumph's evidence for the 'fulness Of the days.' In other words we walk by faith in the face Of riddles which remain to the last unanswered. Nor is there any ground for discontent at this condition of life. It not unfrequently happens that the clear perception that a difficulty is at present irremovable suggests a reasonable hope Of fuller light hereafter. And though it may bel j. Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

SECTION VI THE CATHOLIC WORSHIP INTRODUCTION History knows no instance of a religion without a ritual, and consequently the existence of a Christian ritual should surprise no one. But it is easy to conceive that, if the essence of Christianity is such as Herr Harnack has defined it, so pure a Christianity must exclude all external forms of worship. A singular religion, designed, one would think, for angelic hosts, where every individual constitutes a separate species, rather than for men destined to live together on the earth! CHAPTER I As the rupture with Judaism obliged the primitive community to take the form of a distinct society, so also it led to the establishment of forms of worship. "No religious movement can exist without a body."1 We are yet told that Christian ritual was the result of the struggle of the Church against gnosticism. The Church assumed forms similar to those it reproved in its adversaries.2 By the end of the second century she is an organ of worship, the separation of the priests from the laity is an accomplished fact, and intermediaries are admitted between God and man. Just as Greek philosophy influenced Christian faith from the year 130 onwards, so a new era of Hellenization began towards the years 220 to 230: "then Greek mysteries and Greek civilization, in all the fulness of their development, acted upon the Church, but not Greek mythology nor Polytheism. In the century following, pure > Page 113. 2 Page 130. Hellenism, with all its creations and acquisitions, is established in the Catholic Church. Here also there were reservations, hut they often consisted only in a change of label, the thing being taken just as it was, and in the worship of the saints a Christianity of a lower order was born." * Judged...

Book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint written by William Porcher Dubose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels New Testament by way of a comprehensive comparison of all its diverse points of view and variant expressions Of the Gospel. Not only so, but in this volume itself, which is but part of the proposed plan, I have recognized the fact that even within the narrower limits of the Gospels which give us our record of the Gospel, there are not only possible but actual diverse impressions of what the Gospel is; and that not only is full justice due to each such impression, taken by itself and for its own sake, but that the very fullest justice to each is the only way of arriving at the truth of all, or at the truth of the whole of which they are the complementary and neces sary parts. The one great lesson that must forerun and make ready the Christian unity of the future is this: that contraries do not necessarily contradict, nor need opposites always oppose. What we want is not to surrender or abolish our differences, but to unite and compose them. We need the truth of every va riant opinion and the light from every opposite point of view. The least fragment is right in so far as it stands for a part of the truth. It is wrong only when, as so Often, it elevates into a ground of division from the other fragments just that which in reality fits it to unite with and supplement them. What has been said may indicate at least the spirit and temper in which the study before us is sought to be conducted. I speak here, of course, only in general ities; the concrete application or use of the principles enunciated must be found and judged in the book itself. As a matter of form rather than of substance, I feel that there will be a question as to the success with which the promise of method or procedure has been carried out in the volume before us. The matter is treated in the following order: (1) the Gospel of the Common Humanity, (2) the Gospel of the Work, and (3) the Gospel of the Person of our Lord. And each of these is to be considered, as far as possible, by itself and independently of the others. There are those who hold the first of these and not the other two, or the first two and not the third - at least in the full sense in which we think Christianity includes them all. And we were under obligation to do full justice to the point of view of all. If I have succeeded but imperfectly in doing this, if I have at times, contrary to promise, run the lower position up into the higher, or anticipated the higher in the lower, it is at least a question where the responsibility lies. It may be that what I myself believe to be, not three gospels, but three aspects or stages of one and the same Gospel, may indeed be so. And it may be that they themselves do, of themselves and in spite Of us, so run up together into one, that it is impossible for us, however honest we may be in the effort to do justice to each by itself, to keep them apart; so predetermined are they, and determined, to find each its own meaning and fulfilment, not in the sep arate truth of each, but in the united and common truth of all. Download or read book On to Christ the Gospel of the New Era Classic Reprint written by Edwin a McAlpin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On to Christ, the Gospel of the New Era The object of this study is to bring home to all thoughtful minds some of the problems of the Church in dealing with the opportunities of the New Era. An effort is made in the first half of this book to point out the failures of the past, and then in the last half we try to show how the Church can meet these problems in a practical way. The problem is outlined in the first chapter and then different phases of it are discussed with suggestions of how they should be met in the following chapters. In the Second Part we make some practical sugges tions on the reconstruction of the Church's life and thought. Some of these solutions may seem radical, but it must be remembered that structural weaknesses cannot be permanently repaired by superficial patches. The structure must be rebuilt and the weakness must be climi nated. It may be impossible to get unanimous support for suggestions that seem to affect whole ecclesiastical organisations, but no other alternative seems adequate to meet the needs of the New Era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, John Colquhoun helps us understand the importance of knowing the relationship between law and gospel. Colquhoun especially excels in showing how important the law serves as a believer’s rule of life without compromising the freeness and fullness of the gospel. In one of the greatest Reformed studies of the topic, Colquhoun encourages believers to combat legalism and antinomianism by joyfully embracing a correct view of the law.
