Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Physical Education of Children When we hear of a ship striking against a rock and burying hundreds of unfortunate emigrants in a watery grave, or of the horrors of a field of battle strewn with thousands of the slain and wounded, then shipwreck and war appear to our affrighted imagination as the chief scourges of humanity; and yet, the loss of life they occasion is trifling when compared with that which results from the influence of a polluted atmosphere. For, those evils, however dreadful, exert their fury only at rare intervals, or on a comparatively narrow scene, while the numberless diseases engendered by a vitiated air are uninterruptedly active in shortening the existence of millions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Education and the Preservation of Health Considerations of this description have presented themselves occasionally, as I have been called to observe the evils arising from the prevalent systems of education, and also from too steady an application to liter ary pursuits in those whose education was completed. At one period, my attention was directed to the unfavorable influence of studious and sedentary habits on health, by the occurrence of alarming indisposition among the members of the sacred profes sion, a number of whom became its prema ture and much lamented Victims. At ah other, I witnessed the effects of a mistaken system, on the constitution of multitudes of the fairest work of creative power. I have had the misfortune to behold, when it was too late to apply a remedy, numer ous instances of decay in the most vigorous constitutions, and of distortion in the best proportioned forms. Book School Program in Physical Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Program in Physical Education Classic Reprint written by Clark W. Hetherington and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Program in Physical Education The report of Clark W. Hetherington, herewith submitted, on a proposed "School Program in Physical Education" is very broad in its scope. Beginning with a concise review of the rise of physical education in the public schools, it proceeds to a destructive critical analysis of the attempts that have been made to adapt European methods of physical education to American schools, and thence it passes to a constructive scientific presentation of the problems, objectives, and principles involved in the organization of a school program. Perhaps the greatest contribution made by the author in this report is to be found in his treatment of the primary aims of physical education. He shows how the big-muscle activities must be organized as an essential and bulky phase of child life, and then how these big-muscle activities must be organized in such ways as to secure their inherent values for the development of the fundamental intellectual, emotional, nervous, and organic powers underlying efficiency in life. Mr. Hetherington has had much experience and much success both as a teacher and as a supervisor of physical education. His theories, therefore, have been submitted to the test of experiment in school work and on the playground. They are the conclusions derived from long observation and much experimentation as well as from thought and study.
