Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise on Physical Optics A special feature of the work is the careful comparison between theory and experiment at every stage. From our standpoint as to the aim of science, such a comparison appears all-important. The one difficulty in this matter has been to get access to the most accurate and recent experimental results; a difficulty arising entirely from the present isolation of the writer. At the ends of the earth there are no great libraries to which to refer, and the procuring of material from 'home' is tedious and uncertain. In dealing with experimental results I have deliberately refrained from entering upon descriptions of the methods of experiment as, in my judgment, quite out of place in such a work as this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Optics: Or the Nature and Properties of Light, a Descriptive and Experiment Treatise The author, on commencing an experimental study of Physical Optics more than a quarter of a century ago, found a want of experimental guidance in the treatises upon the subject, and this want has not yet been supplied. It is true that experimental results have been described, but not with the experimental detail which the student needs, in order to abridge his labour and facilitate his progress. Like other physical sciences, its development rests almost entirely upon the application of mathematical analysis, and accordingly the discussions of the original investigators are frequently too mathematical for general readers. Though the author, from the commencement of his experiments, had an adequate store of mathematical knowledge for application to his own researches, and to follow the researches of others, yet he has continually seen that the introduction of mathematical formulae into treatises upon Physical Optics must restrict the study of the science to a smaller class than was desirable; for many of the most expert experimenters have only slender acquirements in mathematical analysis. It has been the author's object to supply the want of a descriptive, experimental, and popular treatise on Physical Optics, and to point out the bearing of the different results upon the nature and properties of Light. Book Treatise on Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Treatise on Optics Classic Reprint written by William N. Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Optics 1. When a material object is presented before us, we become by vision sensible of its existence and figure. In such a case light is said to be propagated from the object to our eyes, and the science of Optics has for its design the examination of the circumstances of such propagation. The science is divided into Geometrical and Physical Optics. In Geometrical Optics the circumstances of the transmission and modification of light are computed on certain laws established by experiment; in Physical Optics these laws are accounted for on hypotheses of the structure of bodies, and of the matter filling the space in which they are placed. In a similar manner in Geometrical Astronomy the phenomena of heavenly bodies are calculated on observed laws which their apparent motions are found to obey; in Physical Astronomy these apparent laws are shewn to result from the hypothesis of Gravitation. The former branch of the science is the subject of the present treatise, wherein from certain laws established by experiment under simple circumstances, the course of light under more complex circumstances is computed, and the results applied to the construction of Optical Instruments. Book Physical Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physical Optics Classic Reprint written by Robert W. Wood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Optics The present volume was commenced at a time when Preston's Theory of Light was practically the only advanced text book on the subject in English, suitable for general class work. This work, while excellent in every respect, could scarcely be said to represent our present knowledge of the subject. Anomalous dispersion and the relation existing between absorption and dispersion was barely mentioned, and of course the recent remarkable discoveries in the field of magneto-optics were not recorded. In the meantime two very excellent books have appeared, the English translation of Drude's Lehrbuch der Optik, which cannot be surpassed, and Schuster's Theory of Optics which, while extremely interesting and suggestive, omits all mention of the Laws of Radiation, Fluorescence and Phosphorescence, and the whole subject of the "Optics of moving media." In the present volume especial stress has been laid on the experimental side, and it is the authors hope that the perhaps too frequent references to experiments with which he has been more or less directly associated, will not be taken as an indication of a lack of perspective. No pretence at originality in the mathematical treatment is made: the work has been compiled to a great extent from lecture notes, and many plagiarisms doubtless occur. The excellent theoretical treatment, based upon the electro-magnetic theory, given by Drude, has been followed very closely, and it is hoped that this acknowledgment may serve in place of the numerous quotation marks which would otherwise be necessary. Various other standard text-books have been drawn upon freely, especially the very comprehensive work of Verdet. Too much space has perhaps been given to the theory of dispersion, and the incorporation of the somewhat lengthy development of the dispersion formula by elementary methods, based upon the elastic-solid theory, may appear superfluous.
