Book A Treatise on Photography Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Photography Classic Reprint written by W. de Wiveleslie Abney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Photography The numerous advances in the art of Photography have made it incumbent on the author to make a thorough revision of the previous editions of this work. This has not only necessitated the addition of new matter, but also the excision of some which it was felt might be omitted without detriment to the completeness of the subject. The additions have, however, considerably overbalanced the excisions, with the result that the pages have been considerably increased in number. The aim of the author has been to give a rational explanation Of most of the different phenomena to be met with in Photography, and at the same time to give sufficient practical directions to enable the student to produce a picture which should be technically good, and also to show how Photography may be made an aid to research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Photography N umerous changes have been made in this edition. Matters become obsolete have been suppressed, and improvements in the processes generally practiced have been described. We have not noticed; however, any of the new processes in printing, Which have lately made their appearance. The processes of carbon print ingvie consider not yet sufficiently practical to be of use to the professional photographer. We thought of being able to give a method superior to the ordinary printing process, and even, on this account, retarded the publication of this edition; but the process in question turned out to - have been greatly overrated. We refer here to the Wothlotype process, the appear ance of which created such an excitement in the pho tographic community. The results obtained by this process do not meet the anticipation of photographers. Prints made by it possess no advantage over those made in the ordinary way, neither ln quality, facility of manipulation, cost, nor permanency. Our aim being to bring forth a guide for practical photographers, we have thus omitted a description of it, and devoted our Space to objects of more direct value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Photography: Practical, Theoretic, and Applied The book OF photography has been prepared at the request of many readers of my smaller books on the subject who have expressed a wish for a comprehensive treatise, My own practice in Photography dates back to the time when the operator prepared each plate for his own use; first by a tedious process of cleaning the glass, next by dexterously flooding it with collodion, and finally by sensitising it in a bath of silver nitrate. My first photographs, some of which I still possess, were taken with apparatus wholly my own construction, which served its purpose quite satisfactorily for many years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photo Lighting: A Treatise on Light and Its Effect Under the Skylight, Including Chapters on Skylight and Skylight Construction, Window Lighting and Dark Room Work Frequently we have been requested by mail to give our method or rule for making the different lightings, as we have practiced them for years past. This, we feel sure, our readers will understand is a very difficult thing to do. It is a difficult matter to lay down a rule for lighting a face, and it is especially hard to put one's ideas into writing, so that all may understand just what the writer wishes to convey. Where we have our audience in front of us, and have the use of a skylight and a subject to demonstrate on, it is much easier, as we can then point out the different phases of lighting in a way that the on-looker may see for himself, just the effect we are striving for. Again there is the problem of pleasing all operators. There are no two that can agree on all things, and few that will agree on anything; and yet we are all working toward the same end - to secure a perfect negative. In many, many cases where two operators are at loggerheads, as to their methods, after the plates are developed from each, the work from one can not be distinguished from the other, and yet these men may be calling each other anything but pet names. We all, of course, think we are right, and it may be that we are all right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Treatise on Enamelling and Retouching in Photography Shake well before using. Pour a few draps on the glass; rub well with a lump of silver paper all over until quite dry; then with a wash-leather rub well, but not too hard, and in a few seconds the glass will be clean. This can be ascertained by breathing on it, when the portion moistened by the breath should be perfectly free from marks of any kind. This done, the plates may be stored for use in clean grooved boxes. Instead of the above solution, ammonia may be used. Pour a few drops on the plate, and rub well with a very fine cloth; afterwards, with a chamois leather, remove every trace of ammonia, and polish with a little alcohol. This last method is not quite so rapid as the other, but it has this advantage, that no particles of dust are left on the edges of the glass. Download or read book The Complete Photographer Classic Reprint written by R. Child Bayley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Photographer Obody who has once come under the spell Of the camera, and has so far penetrated into the mysteries of photography as to be able to expose with a reasonably quiet mind as to the ultimate nature of his negatives, can ever there after free himself completely from its fascination. I have been under the spell for nearly thirty years, but my camera is as good a companion as ever, and photography is as entertaining in 1914 as in 1885. And incalculably easier also. The great reduction in its difficulties and complications has made the camera vastly more popular; but at the same time it has had the curious and unforeseen result that, comparatively speaking, there are fewer amateurs to whom its use is their chief hobby. Formerly success was only to be attained by concentrating one's hole attention on the processes employed, and photography was the pursuit of a few enthusiasts. Today, while almost every one photographs, there has not been SO vast an increase in the number of enthusiasts, although the increase has been a large one. Many have been led by its facility to take it up casually, and have found that even in that way it will furnish a great deal Of pleasure and Of attractive and useful occupation. Some Of these are led further and further in its pursuit. They find that in spite of hand-cameras, mechanical development, and gaslight papers, there is still plenty of scope for the exercise Of personal Skill there are plenty Of difficulties to confront and triumphs to achieve, and that as a pastime an inexhaustible field opens out before them as they proceed. To such a field the later chapters of this book may serve as an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photography With Emulsions: A Treatise on the Theory and Practical Working of the Collodion and Gelatine Emulsion Processes Another Edition of this work has been called for by the Publishers, and, in preparing it, the Author has endeavoured so to rearrange and prune the older matter, and to insert new, as to make it useful to those whose knowledge of chemistry may be limited, as well as to those who are experts in that far-reaching science. Again, there are many who at present care nothing about theory, and who regard practical results as their sole aim. An endeavour has been made to meet their views as well, by, as far as possible, confining all theoretical considerations to those chapters which are marked with double asterisks in the table of Contents.
