Download or read book Petroleum Vol 3 of 3 written by Boverton Redwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petroleum, Vol. 3 of 3: A Treatise On, the Geographical Distribution and Geological Occurrence of Petroleum, and Natural Gas; The Physical and Chemical Properties, Production, and Refining of Petroleum and Ozokerite A large number of physical and chemical tests are applied to the raw materials and manufactured products to which this work relates. The industry is conducted upon a basis of recognised standards of quality, and testing is necessary on the one hand to satisfy the refiner that his processes are being properly conducted, and on the other to protect the buyer. Moreover, certain products are required to conform to statutory and municipal regulations, and prescribed tests have to be applied in connection with these restrictions. Crude Petroleum. - The specific gravity of crude petroleum, and the amount of water and earthy matter in suspension, are usually ascertained. In many cases a test of fractional distillation is applied with a View of detecting any admixture of distilled products or residue. In Burma the flashing - point is frequently determined in connection with regulations relating to the transport. It may also be requisite, in the case of a crude oil from a new district, to take note of the colour and odour, to determine the flashing-point, the viscosity, whether separation of solid hydrocarbons takes place on cooling, and if so at what temperature, and whether sulphur is present, and if so in what pro portion also to ascertain experimentally what percentage of the usual com mercial products, oil similar to the sample may be expected to yield on the manufacturing scale. In some instances it may be desirable to determine the elementary composition of an oil and its calorific value. Book The Petroleum and Allied Industries

Download or read book The Petroleum and Allied Industries written by James Kewley and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Petroleum and Allied Industries: Petroleum, Natural Gas, Natural Waxes, Asphalts and Allied Substances, and Shale Oils The development of the oilfields of the British Empire and the question of home supplies of liquid fuel have become matters of national importance. The possibilities of augmenting petroleum supplies or of partially replacing them by means of oils derived from the distillation of oil shales and even of coals, are receiving serious attention. This great industry employs a multitude of men a large porportion of whom are necessarily engaged in non-technical work. Among these men there exists a very commendable desire to know something of the great industry with which they are associated, a desire which is shared by many others whose connection with the industry is indirect. This book has been written in the hope that it will appeal to such, and to many university graduates to whom a knowledge of the outlines of an industry may be of assistance in determining their choice of a career. An effort has been made to make the book up to date as far as possible, and to include not only crude petroleum and its products but also some account of the closely related subjects, such as natural gas, the naturally occurring bituminous substances, the pyrobitumens and oil shales. Book A Handbook of the Petroleum Industry Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of the Petroleum Industry Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by David T. Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Petroleum Industry, Vol. 1 of 2 Wherever petroleum occurs in nature, natural gas is generally found in the same locality or region. Gas, however, is less restricted in its distribution than is oil, and numerous gas pools exist where no petroleum occurs in close proximity. Because of the relationship of natural gas to petroleum, the two substances must, to a consider able extent, be considered together. Both petroleum and natural gas are among the great industrial resources of the world and the countries which possess them in large quantities are exceedingly fortunate. The fact that these substances have not yet been developed in a particular locality is rarely proof of their absence, as no year passes without the discovery of new and often unsuspected fields or pools. The occurrence of oil and gas is widespread, no stratified rock being so young, and scarcely any so old, as absolutely to preclude their existence. Consequently, any country in which geological conditions are favorable is warranted in exerting every effort and undertaking great expense to investigate and determine its resources in petroleum and natural gas. In this outline of the occurrence of petroleum the numerous references made use of are given credit where possible. In addition to those specifically mentioned there are certain general sources of information, such as the report of S. F. Peckham entitled, The Production, Technology and Uses of Petroleum and its Products, in volume 10 Of the Tenth Census of the United States, 1880, pages 1-319' A Treatise on Petroleum by Sir Boverton Redwood, London, 1913, three volumes; Petroleum Mining and Oil Field Development, by Arthur Beeby Thompson, London, 1916, 648 pages; the annual statis tical reports in the Mineral Resources series of the United States Geological Survey, by David T. Day, S. H. Shotwell, Joseph D. Weeks, F. H. Oliphant, W. T. Griswold and John D. Northrop, and many other Geological Survey references of a general nature. In this chapter the word oil is frequently used as being sufficiently synonymous with petroleum for the subject matter in hand.
