Book The Grammar of the Machine

Download or read book The Grammar of the Machine written by Edward Stevens and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the American economy moved toward a manufacturing base and mass production, creating a demand for a literacy that encompassed not only the traditional alphabetic form of expression but also scientific and mathematical notation and spatial and graphic representation. How did the world of learning respond to this demand? What kinds of educational institutions, teachers, textbooks, and patterns of instruction emerged? Edward Stevens, Jr., describes the important technological changes that took place in antebellum America and the challenges they posed for education. Investigating the instruction, curricula, and textbooks used in the common schools, in the mechanics' institutes, and, specifically, at the Troy Female Seminary and the Rensselaer School in upstate New York, he demonstrates how advocates of technical literacy attempted to teach new skills. Stevens shows that the tensions between the liberal and the vocational, between a culture of print and a nonverbal culture of experience, persisted in technical education through the first half of the nineteenth century but were resolved temporarily by a common moral vision.

Book Technology in World Civilization revised and expanded edition

Download or read book Technology in World Civilization revised and expanded edition written by Arnold Pacey and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of a milestone work on the global history of technology. This milestone history of technology, first published in 1990 and now revised and expanded in light of recent research, broke new ground by taking a global view, avoiding the conventional Eurocentric perspective and placing the development of technology squarely in the context of a "world civilization." Case studies include "technological dialogues" between China and West Asia in the eleventh century, medieval African states and the Islamic world, and the United States and Japan post-1950. It examines railway empires through the examples of Russia and Japan and explores current synergies of innovation in energy supply and smartphone technology through African cases. The book uses the term "technological dialogue" to challenges the top-down concept of "technology transfer," showing instead that technologies are typically modified to fit local needs and conditions, often triggering further innovation. The authors trace these encounters and exchanges over a thousand years, examining changes in such technologies as agriculture, firearms, printing, electricity, and railroads. A new chapter brings the narrative into the twenty-first century, discussing technological developments including petrochemicals, aerospace, and digitalization from often unexpected global viewpoints and asking what new kind of industrial revolution is needed to meet the challenges of the Anthropocene.

Book Logic and Society

Download or read book Logic and Society written by Yuichiro Kawana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses John Stuart Mill’s intellectual activity from about 1827 to 1848, namely between his recovery from his so-called ‘Mental Crisis’ and the publication of Principles of Political Economy. During this period, along with deepening his understanding of contemporary society as commercial civilization, Mill aspired to create a new system of science of society which would inquire into the nature, process of historical change, and prospects of society. Among the indispensable constituent sciences of his system, this book pays particular attention on his projected sciences of history and of the formation of character (ethology), and clarifies that the implications of his interest in these sciences were more significant for the better understanding of Mill’s political thought than many scholars have assumed.
