Into six equal parts, and calculate the angles at each point, we should find them correspond nearly with the means of those given by Smeaton and others. Mills are generally made with four strong wooden arms or radii, fixed firmly in a central socket, and steadied and stiffened by tie-rods, connecting their extremities together, and with a projecting strut on the central boss. The width of each sail at the extreme should be about half of the radius, so that in a mill 60 ft. Diameter, or 30 ft. Radius, each sail would be 15 ft. Wide at the extreme. The part of the arm next the centre for about 71; of the radius, that is, 5 ft. In the case supposed, is not fitted with sails because the surface there is so little effective, as well from its short leverage as from its obstructing the wind reflected from the head of the turret behind it. The width at the inner end should be of the radius, or 10 ft. The surface of each sail is therefore 312% sq. Ft., and the total of the four is 312% X 4 1250 sq. Ft. The total area of the circle 60 ft. In diameter is somewhat above 2800 sq. Ft., so that not half the surface of the circle is clothed with sails. There would be no disadvantage in extending the surface by making the sails broader or more numerous, until it became of the whole surface. Beyond this additional sail-surface is disadvantageous, for it appears to obstruct the free passage of the currents re ected from the sails, and thus clogs their motions. It is found advantageous to arrange the surface of the sail somewhat in the proportions of Fig. 2, which represents the front View of one sail. In describing these, the necessary facts have been presented to the student in the order in which a knowledge of them is required; the crude ores being traced from the mines in which they occur through the various mechanical and metallurgic elaborations which they subsequently undergo before the metal is obtained. The student of metallurgy should be enabled to distinguish, by their crystallographic as well as by their chemical characters, all the more frequently occurring ores, and be familiarly acquainted with the composition and properties of the various fuels employed in furnace operations. With a view to facilitate the acquirement of this knowledge, a short chapter on crystallography has been introduced, whilst another has been devoted to natural and artificial fuels. The information which has been given on the important subject of Assaying will, it is hoped, sufficiently supply a want which has been long felt in this country. In the preparation of this volume, the works of Dufrenoy, Regnault, Berthier, Knapp, Scheerer, Le Play, Rammelsberg, Lampadius, Dana, Karsten, and Aileron de Vieillefosse, have been consulted. Other authors whose works have been used will be found specially mentioned in the text. As a former pupil of the first-named mineralogist, I have employed in a condensed form the system of crystallography adopted in his valuable work on that subject, from which have been taken the greater portion of the diagrams relating to the laws of crystallization. In consideration of the very important preparation of the ore, before it is subjected to the Solving Process, - namely, the Roasting, - I have thought it proper to devote considerable space to the description of different modifications of this operation, which is regulated by the peculiarity of the ore, and by the subsequent treatment. It is impossible to give any one way which will be suitable in every case; for this reason, and in order to cover all cases as far as possible, a detailed description of different modes of Roasting will not be superfluous. The Solving Process, as now practiced, is a very economical method for the extraction of silver, for the reason that no quicksilver and no castings are used except what are needed for crushing. Mills in Mexico being dependent on San Francisco for the shoes, dies, gearing, etc., of amalgamating pans, millmen there know how to appreciate a process confined to wooden tubs requiring no power. To make the work complete as far as possible, the processes of Dry Dressing are also briefly described therein and the whole is so arranged, and illustrated by diagrams, as to enable every one to be successful in concentrating ores. As the method of reduction by stamping is considered import ant, the erection and treatment of stamp-works, as also the construction of grinders, are treated in full, and explained by numerous drawings. Among the concentrating machines, the preference has been given to self-discharging continuous contrivances; and of these again to such as have been sufficiently investigated as to their efficiency, the amount of water and of power required to run them, their proportion of loss, etc. - circumstances entirely neglected with California inventions, - the relative data of the latter being mere guess-work, and unreliable. A short description of many less important contrivances may appear superfluous, but the knowledge of them may prevent many persons from spending time and money, as has often happened.
