Book Masonry as Applied to Civil Engineering

Download or read book Masonry as Applied to Civil Engineering written by F. Noel Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masonry as Applied to Civil Engineering: Being a Practical Treatise on the Design and Construction of Engineering, Works in Stone and Heavy Concrete, Adapted for the Use of Students, and Those Engaged in the Practice, of the Profession As far as stonework and stone-cutting concern the builder and architect, the many treatises on building con struction leave nothing to be desired. They treat the subject for the most part, however, from the artistic stand point. The object of the present work is to consider the question from the point of view of utility, that is heavy works, of use rather than mere ornament. Every endeavour has been made to set forth, broadly, without too much recourse to higher mathematics, the theoretical considera tions with regard to structures and members thereof which, while being constructed with the greatest economy, shall resist, beyond doubt, failure or collapse under any normal condition which the designer thinks wise to provide for. These considerations are as far as possible illustrated by practical examples; in fact, this has been the aim of the author right through. It is hoped, therefore, that the work will be useful alike to students and those engaged in practice. Notification of any errors will be greatly appre ciated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rudimentary Treatise on Foundations Concrete Works Art of Building; Principles of Brick-making and the Manufacture of Bricks and Tiles; On Masonry and Stone-cutting, and on Foundations and Concrete Works, is the best test of their practical utility. There are few manuals, designed specially for the use of work men, that have achieved greater success. In the preface to the former edition Mr. Dobson called the attention of those readers Who may not have purchased the Art of Building to the fact of the present volume being written in continuation of the chapter in that Work devoted to the subject of and intended to give further information on those parts of the subject Which could then only be touched upon very briefly. He added, I may also observe, that many subjects Which are treated of very fully in other volumes of the Rudimentary Treatises are here for that reason left unnoticed, or are merely glanced at in a cursory manner; as, for example, the blasting of rocks, the nature and properties of limes and cements, the construction of travelling and other cranes, and of hoisting machinery in general. Book Practical Masonry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Masonry Classic Reprint written by Edward Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Masonry Most works on this subject set out witu a description of all the minutiae of the art of building; and though they may, perhaps, exhibit something that will be useful to the apprentice, yet they contain much that is of no importance to the practical mechanic; while the price is so much enhanced, that few can well afford to possess them. As permanency in building seems, at the present day, to be an object more desirable than formerly, it has been thought that a brief account of the nature and qualities of building materials, with a short exposition of their component parts, would not be misplaced in a treatise of this kind. The Compiler flatters himself, that he has, on this head, furnished some informa tion, that will be serviceable not only to the operator but to the proprietor; neither of whom can, with safety, remain unacquainted with the quality of the materials employed. Book Operative Masonry Or a Theoretical and Practical Treatise of Building

Download or read book Operative Masonry Or a Theoretical and Practical Treatise of Building written by Edward Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operative Masonry, or a Theoretical and Practical Treatise of Building: Containing a Scientific Account of Stones, Clays, Bricks, Mortars, Cements, &C.; A Description of Their Component Parts, With the Manner of Preparing and Using Them IT is rather surprising that, notwithstanding the number and magnitude of our public edifices exe cuted in stone, and the numerous Treatises which have been published on the art of Carpentry in this and other countries, no work on the Principles of Masonry has yet appeared in England, except one on Stone - cutting by General Vallancey, pub lished in London in 1766. The General, though he has not avowed it, has copied the diagrams and references from a very able French work on the subject by De la Rue. This English publication was intended to consist of five parts, yet only one has been given to the Public; and that without inserting the most valuable of the precepts and observations which; are in the original _work.. And this is more surprising, when we consider that no department in the art oflbuilding affords so great a scope for ingenuity, or needs so much an exten sive knowledge of the best aids of Geometry, as the Art of Stone-cutting.
