Book Treatise on Intuitionistic Type Theory

Download or read book Treatise on Intuitionistic Type Theory written by Johan Georg Granström and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intuitionistic type theory can be described, somewhat boldly, as a partial fulfillment of the dream of a universal language for science. This book expounds several aspects of intuitionistic type theory, such as the notion of set, reference vs. computation, assumption, and substitution. Moreover, the book includes philosophically relevant sections on the principle of compositionality, lingua characteristica, epistemology, propositional logic, intuitionism, and the law of excluded middle. Ample historical references are given throughout the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epistemic logic is the branch of philosophical thought that seeks to formalize the discourse about knowledge. Its object is to articulate and clarify the general principles of reasoning about claims to and attributions of knowledge. This comprehensive survey of the topic offers the first systematic account of the subject as it has developed in the journal literature over recent decades. Rescher gives an overview of the discipline by setting out the general principles for reasoning about such matters as propositional knowledge and interrogative knowledge. Aimed at graduate students and specialists, Epistemic Logic elucidates both Rescher's pragmatic view of knowledge and the field in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Logic, Pure and Applied Little more will be expected from a work of the following description, than that it should contain an intelligible and concise exposition of those facts and principles which form, as it were, the groundwork of logical science. Necessarily, therefore, it must be, for the most part, a complication of such views as have obtained general acceptance, and can lay but little claim to any high degree of originality. At the same time, I may be permitted to state that some feature exist which serve to distinguish this Treatise from its numerous predecessors, and which will, I hope, prove of service to the student by inciting him to examine for himself such theories and principles as come under his notice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Logic: Or the Laws of Pure Thought; Comprising Both the Aristotelic and Hamiltonian Analyses of Logical Forms, and Some Chapters of Applied Logic The revival of the study of Logic, at least in England and America, as an important element of a University education, dates only from the publication of Dr. Whately's treatise on the subject, little over thirty years ago. Yet so much has been accomplished for the advancement of the science during this short period, that this treatise, with all its excellences, must be admitted to be now as far behind the times as were the compilation by Aldrich, and the meagre compendium by Dr. Watts, the use of which it superseded. Dr. Whately lived long enough to be able to appropriate to himself the epigrammatic boast, that he had labored so effectually as to render his own work useless. Without the interest which was awakened in the study of the science by the publication of his book and the discussions which it excited, it is not too much to say that many of the valuable works upon Logic, which have appeared during the last thirty years, either would not have been written, or would have lacked some of their most interesting and important features. Book excerpt: A growing interest in many-valued logic has developed which to a large extent is based on applications, intended as well as already realised ones. These applications range from the field of computer science, e.g. in the areas of automated theorem proving, approximate reasoning, multi-agent systems, switching theory, and program verification, through the field of pure mathematics, e.g. in independence of consistency proofs, in generalized set theories, or in the theory of particular algebraic structures, into the fields of humanities, linguistics and philosophy.
