Download or read book A Treatise on Justification by Faith Classic Reprint written by Paton James Gloag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Justification by Faith There are, it is admitted, no want of excel lent works on this subject. These, the author has freely consulted. He would, -in particular, mention Davenant's Disputatio de J netitia, Bishop Barlow's Letters on Justification, Dr. Owen On Justification, and a work on the same subject by Dr. Bennet of London in answer to the lectures of Dr. Newman. These works, however, are mainly controversial, and the treatises of Davenant and Owen, in par ticular, are too elaborate and scholastic to be well fitted for the general reader. It has ao cordingly appeared to the author that there is room for a Work on the subject of a more popular and practical kind. The author has repeatedly and carefully read the celebrated lectures of Dr. Newman, but, he must confess, with a feeling of disappointment. The reason ing appears to him defective, and the distinc tions made either erroneous or unintelligible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Living By Faith written by Oswald Bayer and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Living by faith" is much more than a general Christian precept; it is the fundamental posture of believers in a world rife with suffering and injustice. In this penetrating reflection on the meaning of "justification," Oswald Bayer shows how this key religious term provides a comprehensive horizon for discussing every aspect of Christian theology, from creation to the end times. Inspired by and interacting with Martin Luther, the great Christian thinker who grappled most intensely with the concept of justification, Bayer explores anew the full range of traditional dogmatics (sin, redemption, eschatology, and others), placing otherwise complex theological terms squarely within their proper milieu -- everyday life. In the course of his discussion, Bayer touches on such deep questions as the hidden nature of God, the hope for universal justice, the problem of evil, and -- one of the book's most engaging motifs -- Job's daring lawsuit with God.

Book Justification by Faith Alone in the Merits of Christ

Download or read book Justification by Faith Alone in the Merits of Christ written by John Hogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Justification by Faith Alone, in the Merits of Christ: First of a Course of Lectures Delivered Before the Young Mens' Christian Association Christ bears a similar relation to believers that the head does to the body, or the vine to the branches. In consequence of this vital union, virtue flows from Christ into believers, a virtue which pre cedes, follows, and accompanies good works. Thus the righteous ness of believers may properly be called the righteousness of God, since it flows from God to them, and conversely the righteousness of God may be called their righteousness, since the virtue of Christ excites, co - operates, and unites with human free-will, so as to render it theirs. It follows thatjustified persons satisfy the divine law by their good works which are performed in God, and if they depart in grace, they truly merit the attainment of eternal life. But the simple recognition of this fact does n0t make the religious affirmations of an earlier time trans parent to us. Justification by faith remains a difficult and obscure doctrine. We may be impressed by the fact that the Lutheran church has confessed it loyally and unswervingly through the centuries since the Reformation: But we still have difficulties in comprehending it, in interpreting it, in seeing. Is it inconsistent to suppose that by faith the Israelites passed through the sea, as by dry land, and yet, that they crossed it on their feet Was it portly, again, by faith, and partly by works, that David overcame Goliath, because, although he tells him that he came against him in the name of the Lord, he employed, notwithstanding, the instrumentality of a sling and a stone, and a cer tain acquired dexterity in using them, for aecom plishing his overthrow We allege, perhaps, nothing of this kind; we admit that it was her faith, and her faith only, which healed the woman with the issue of blood; and their faith, and their faith only, which carried the Israelites through the Red Sea, as on dry ground; and the name of the Lord, and this only, in which David went against Goliath, though in all these instances a certain wor concurred and was instrumental in producing the resuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Challenging the Traditional Interpretations of Justification by Faith Part 1

Download or read book Challenging the Traditional Interpretations of Justification by Faith Part 1 written by John A. Campbell and published by Living Stream. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first of a two-part work that evaluates the teaching of justification by faith from the early church to modern times in light of the Scriptures and the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. Part 1 begins with a thorough presentation of the evaluative standard by which the authors will measure the teachings of the various Christian traditions. Then, following a historical overview of justification by faith in the major traditions, they proceed to give a detailed assessment of the doctrine as taught in the patristic era, in the medieval era, and by Martin Luther at the inception of the Protestant Reformation. The volume aims to point out the shortcomings and contributions of the first 1,500 years of the church’s teaching on justification by faith and to offer a fresh understanding of this foundational truth of the Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Justification Restoration to holiness and freedom from guilt are inseparably connected with the mediatorial work of Christ, in its effects as manifested in hu man experience, and, therefore, should never be separated in setting forth the complete Bible con ception of salvation. Then, the Scriptures clearly and positively teach that salvation is attainable in and through Christ. There is no salvation out of Christ. Both philosophy and experience bear witness to the futility of all other schemes and processes to bring sinners into reconciliation and c'ommunion with God. The certainty and com pleteness of salvation in and through Christ alone, is the Pauline doctrine. It was dear to the early church, and has come down through the centuries. Hence, the prominence with which justification is set forth in the Scriptures, especially in the Paul ine epistles.
