Book A Treatise on Heavenly Mindedness

Download or read book A Treatise on Heavenly Mindedness written by Thomas Jollie and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Jollie (1629-1703) was a zealous puritan preacher with superior abilities, an active spirit, and humble disposition. He was held in high esteem and influence in the churches of Christ, which he directed to the general good and the glory of God.Few of Jollie's works survive today. This puritan gem on heavenly mindedness is exceedingly rich with Scripture, and dripping with praise to Jesus Christ. Jollie covers in this work the primary doctrine that, "the saints' holy calling out of the world, and their afflicted condition in it is, that they are heavenly both in profession and practice." His text is Hebrews 11:16, "...they desire a better country." He shows that it is the good pleasure of God to appoint this course for his saints though their lives might be filled with suffering and affliction.Jollie teaches that Christians should learn this duty: that we freely subscribe and faithfully hold steadfast to God, no matter what our condition may be, and that we ought to drink down this bitter cup, knowing God will supply the needed grace. There is no Christian that has ever lived that has been removed from suffering or affliction in their life. Such a view supposes that manifold dangers and necessities, temptations and tribulations, attend the people of God in this world. But with the Lord is plenteous redemption. Knowing this, we should keep in mind that it is the good pleasure of God to work all good to his people in such a way and manner as may be, "to the praise of the glory of his grace."

Book A Treatise of Earthly Mindedness

Download or read book A Treatise of Earthly Mindedness written by Jeremiah Burroughs and published by Waymark Books. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "A Treatise of Earthly-mindedness," Puritan author Jeremiah Burroughs exposes many of the evils and dangers of being earthly minded. One of the evils brought out by the author is that earthly mindedness is the root of apostasy. He cites the example of Demas. The apostle Paul said that Demas forsook him because he loved this present world. Burroughs exposes the emptiness of worldly pleasures in favor of the heavenly vision that we all should have, and in good Puritan fashion, manages to lucidly address a hundred other essential topics in passing. Christ proclaimed that we are to "seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness" and to avoid being "of the world" and in this work one can discover the scriptural means of true joy and godly sanctification. "This is the great difference between a wicked man and a godly man," write Burroughs, "one minds earthly things, and the other has his conversation in heaven." Burroughs book is a real gem. Out of print from 1649 until now, its message needs to be read again in an age where worldliness abounds in the professing church.

Book The Sweetness of Divine Meditation

Download or read book The Sweetness of Divine Meditation written by William Bridge and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine meditation on the word of God is a lost art and science in the spiritual disciplines. Christians are often content to read a little and pray a little. They often have little to no strategy for godly meditation. This is where William Bridge will come in. He will not only show the work and way of divine meditation, but he will initially set forth its sweetness. He teaches that this spiritual discipline is the Christian’s daily way of exercising himself in godliness and walking with God, and that such a walk is sweet. This walking is a picture of persistent communion with Jesus Christ, and is eminently sweet in its applications to the soul. Bridge’s main text is, “My meditation of him shall be sweet,” (Psalm 104:34), setting forth the doctrine that it is a sweet thing for a gracious soul to meditate on God. He shows the true nature and notion of meditation, how and in what respects a man may meditate on God, and how it is that meditation is a sweet thing, and profitable for the Christian. In his second part, in the work and manner which godly meditation ought to be accomplished, he answers some objections. He demonstrates that it is the Christian’s duty to meditate on God and the things of God, that it is a duty for every day, how to rightly meditate to make it profitable (with some rules to that end) and then concludes with arguments and motives to press all Christians to the regular and consistent practice of godly meditation. This work is not a scan or facsimile, and has been updated in modern English for easy reading. It also has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
