It appears in medical literature that surgery has been more assiduously cultivated than medicine. This may have induced some to push the surgical treatment of diseases of women to extremes, and in some degree to neglect medicine. On the other hand, physicians, who have been overconfident in their art, may have failed occasionally to do surgery full justice. This is evidently responsible for the frequent and often illogical discussions which have been going on in the past few years regarding so-called radical and conservative practice in gynecology. The science and art of medicine and surgery in their highest development should be above all party questions, and those who place a just estimate on both branches of the healing art, and employ them without predilection and prejudice, are the most successful and reliable. Unreasonable devotion to either medicine or surgery is wrong. A consciousness on the part of the author of this status of gynecology is responsible for the inception and genesis of this work. How far he may be right in thinking that there is room for a new work on the medical branch of gynecology, and to what extent the requirements have been met in this volume, the members of the medical profession alone can decide. If a multiplicity of methods or operations is given for the treatment of a disease, the results must be unsatisfactory, as such a description is at best incomplete or fragmentary in character and leaves the reader with an imperfect conception of the subject. I have therefore in each instance given that which in my judgment is the best plan of treatment, and afterward described such variations as may be required in the management of atypical cases. In follow ing this plan it has been necessary to exclude certain operations and methods of treatment employed by other surgeons, and I do not wish to be misunderstood as implying that they have no value, as I have been guided solely by the desire to present a treatise which shall give a thoroughly detailed account of the practice of gynecology from the standpoint of the general practitioner and the student of medicine. The book is unusually large for a work on gynecology, but it was impossible to lessen the number of pages and at the same time give the necessary technic details and space for the large number of illustrations. It includes a description of those diseases which are essentially gynecologic, and is thus isolated in a somewhat compact form in order that the student may not be confronted by _a too formidable array of facts in his collateral reading and in his preparation for his final examination in the subject. In order to accomplish this purpose certain encumbering details have been subordinated. Thus, in the description of each disease, the underlying pathologic processes are enumerated. Microscopic detail, however, can better be learned from pictures than from tedious descriptions. For that reason' draw ings from microscopic sections illustrating the respective diseases are presented under each subject with full descriptive legends appended to them. In like manner the surgical principles involved in the treatment of the various dis eases are recounted, but the technic of the operations and the pictures illustrating their performance, matters of secondary interest to the student of the theory of gynecology, are reserved for a separate section. Part III is devoted exclusively to the technic of gynecologic surgery and is written for the assistance of the advanced student and practitioner. Surgical devices for the cure of gynecologic diseases are innumerable, and it is impossible to include them all in a book of this scope. Only those operations which from the personal experience or judgment of the author seem best suited for the special requirements are presented.
